Today started with nice and easy 5.28 miles in just over 40 minutes.

While I was on my run, Zak picked breakfast from our tiny berry patch the backyard.

fresh_berries

Those little red berries in the back are currants, there are also red raspberries, small cherries and some black raspberries hiding in the pile too.

Whoops! Lucky for you we’re vegetarian so you are pardoned Mr. Slug.

no_meat

Zak and I ate fruit for breakfast together standing on the deck since the chairs were still wet from last nights rain. I busted out the watermelon for a little more pink.

breakfast_watermelon

OK A LOT more pink. I ate that and then a bunch more.

It’s been about an hour and a half since my first meal of fruit and not surprisingly, I’m already feeling hungry again.

Fruit gets through the stomach in 30 minutes on an empty stomach so I’m ready to move on to oats.

Rolled oats are not raw. They are technically processed because they are steamed to keep them from going rancid. Even so, they aren’t heavily processed and are pretty close to their natural state, so for my purposes I’m happy keeping oats in my life.

oats

Last night I soaked a half cup of oats mixed with flax seed, chopped dates, sliced almonds and almond milk. Just to be clear for anyone looking for proper food combos, this is not properly combined. Dried fruit and nuts are fine but and grains and nuts should not be eaten together.

So many rules! I have these moments where I think it’s ridiculous and silly, but then the science lover in me thinks there really could be something to this. I’m still enjoying the experiment.

And what’s that saying? If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.

Raw Food Musings

Me and my new best friend.

Canon PowerShot SD 960 IS.

Lunch went unphotographed because we got home starving and waiting the hour and a half for my battery to charge would have been a huge joke.

My eyes tend to glaze over when I read about what people are eating without pics. What can I say, I’m a picture person. Without pics I would otherwise skip this but for food combining purposes I’m going write about it today. I’ll keep it brief.

I made a new kind of green smoothie today; spinach, cucumber, half an avocado and unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Today I left out fruit (that I would usually put in) because I now know fruit is supposed to be eaten alone. This would be considered properly combined because nut milk is “neutral”. It was totally yummy even without the fruit. Not sweet but that was fine. It was like salad in liquid form.

I also had two slices of Ezekiel sesame bread (sprouted grains, not raw but a good transistion food) with the other half of the avocado that I mixed with some salsa to make fast guacamole. (Thanks Pat for that idea!) Totally yum and still properly combined as I understand it.

I was totally held over and didn’t even start thinking about food again until 5 or so. This is pretty remarkable for me. Usually I’m thinking about what I’m going to eat at my next meal or snack within an hour or two of a meal.

Since it had been well over 3 hours since my last meal it was “safe” to have some fruit.

watermelon

I had as much as I wanted and didn’t worry about portions. I had a bunch too. This bowl plus two more like this I’d say. It was so juicy and sweet!

Then we had some fun with the camera.

I had a salad planned for dinner. Easy peasy, nothing new under the sun, but wanted to spice it up. Literally.

dressing

Carrot Ginger Dressing from The Raw Food Detox Diet.

This would be raw carrots, curry, fresh ginger, garlic, sunflower oil and apple cider vinegar all thrown into the blender. VOILA! Salad dressing.

salad_for_dinner

Organic red leaf, green leaf, spinach, green peppers, cucumbers, mushrooms and raw corn (thanks for raw corn on salad the idea Heather!)

I usually make Good Seasons Italian dressing for salads… I use store bought seasonings mixed with my own water, vinegar and oil. I feel like this is better than store bought bottled dressing, but when I think more about it, it’s still “processed”. I really like the idea of making my own from scratch. And this was great! Carrots? Ginger? Curry? Garlic? What’s not to like?! Zak got up after dinner and said he was looking for more things to put this dressing on, and then asked if it would be wrong to drink it straight from the container. It really was THAT good.

I was a little skeptical on the raw corn, but it was so sweet and juicy, I loved it. I shaved it straight off the cob and split it up between my salad and Zak’s salad.

I spent more time today thinking about eating raw foods and worrying about properly combining foods. WHY am I doing this? What is it that I hope to get out of this?

Of course my first goal is to be healthy. The benefits of a raw food diet and proper food combining really appeal to me. I want abundant energy to play with my children, run, take care of my family and my household, to do all the things I enjoy. I want to maintain my weight, maybe even lose a few more pounds, WITHOUT feeling deprived.

I want to stop craving certain foods to the point where it’s all I think about. It’s a little embarrassing to admit this but thanks to food and healthy living blogs I’ve come to know I’m not alone out here. I’ve come a long way with food cravings… from totally avoiding treats of any kind, to eating moderate amounts of processed foods that eventually that leads cravings impossible to ignore, to overeating when I finally do let myself have whatever it was that I was avoiding. I’ve gone through periods where cravings are not an issue and have times food and sweets are all I think about.

I think the answer for me really lies with processed foods. I was so comforted to read this over the weekend:

Vegans, vegetarians and organic consumers alike: if you are eating any refined foods, you have addictions running through your blood stream.

Yes, yes, YES!

I’ve come to find that if I can avoid eating refined foods, even things that I think are “good”, like Kashi crackers, Heart to Heart, organic cookies and snack foods, it just makes me want MORE of it. If I let myself eat these things without restraint, I would stop thinking about it, but I would also gain weight. No dice.

So what’s the answer? How do I NOT think about food AND maintain my weight?

Today and for the last few days I’ve had almost nothing that was processed. I did have Ezekiel bread at lunch, but since it’s a sprouted grain it’s pretty innocent. It didn’t leave me wanting more and I felt perfectly satisfied after every meal and snack today. And even right now, hours after dinner, I’m not thinking about what I’m not letting myself eat or what I wish I could have. THIS is how I want to live. Do I need to properly combine foods at every meal? Do I need to eat mainly raw foods? I’m not sure, but it’s certainly worth experimenting with if it means that I can live my life without feeling like I’m waiting for my next meal or snack AND maintaining a healthy weight.

And Gena’s post today couldn’t have been more perfectly timed. If you are interested in learning more about food combining, check out the clif notes on food combining for a great recap.

This got a little lengthy, so I guess I’ll wrap it up now with a happy ending.

Will wonders never cease… chocolate is “neutral”. Green and Blacks 70% Dark Chocolate was my post dinner treat.

choc_ever_after

The Raw Food Detox Diet

July 5th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Good Reads - (11 Comments)

I finished The Raw Food Detox Diet while we were up north with Zak’s family at their cottage for the holiday weekend.

This was the only food picture I took all weekend!

kombucha

I’ve seen this in my local health food stores but have never been interested in trying it. I rarely buy drinks when we are out, I usually only bring my own water. But after seeing this on many raw food blogs, I was feeling a little “rawdy” when I saw it at a new health food store we stopped at on the way up north on Friday.

The clerk told me it tastes like vinegar but really it just tastes like STRONG ginger tea. It wasn’t bad, but I don’t mind the taste of ginger (or vinegar for that matter). It is definitely an intense drink and is not sweet.

The Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose

I’ve had some time to process the information in this book these past few days, milling these ideas around in my head and going back to re-read sections, chapters and recipes as needed. I want to give a brief summary of the book as I have already begun to incorporate some of the things from this book into my life now. I’ll go in to more detail in the days ahead.

I plan to treat this book like I do every other book on nutrition: Like a Buffet. I’m going to take what I like and leave the rest.

This book talks about more than just raw food and the benefits it can have on your health. A large part of following the eating plan she describes has a lot to do with properly combining food. Basically, ways to combine foods to get them to move quickly through the body. She says that when foods are improperly combined, they sit in your digestive track for long periods of time and are a drain on our energy and mess up all sorts of things in our bodies; from our skin, constipation, IBS, indigestion, thyroid disorders, circulation problems, skin problems, the list is endless. I believe this is probably correct, it makes sense to me, especially with the amount of processed foods in the typical American diet. She says these foods are unrecognizable by the human body (Jillian says the same thing in Master Your Metabolism and the Skinny Bitches say it too) and do nothing but make us fat and keep us addicted to these foods.

In the book she describes how to combine the different types of foods you eat, and she breaks them up into four categories.

1. Starches (whole grain breads, rice, sweet potatoes, pasta, avocado falls into this category as well)
2. Fleshes (meat, eggs, fish, raw cheese)
3. Nuts/seeds/dried fruit
4. Fresh fruit

You are not supposed to mix any of these 4 categories. Vegetables, nut milks, chocolate, mustard, soy sauce, spices, are “neutral” and can be mixed with the first 3 categories. Fruit should ALWAYS be eaten alone, typically first thing in the morning and even better if it’s the only thing you eat throughout the morning until lunch time. She says it takes 30 minutes for fruit to go through your system (45 minutes for a banana) and you can move to another category if desired at that point. If you have fruit later in the day, it should be 3 hours after your last meal and then nothing again for at least 30 minutes.

LOTS of rules here! It seems pretty overwhelming at first, but I’ve already got a lot of it committed to memory and am willing to give this a try. I want to read more about the benefits and approaches to properly combining food (Fit for Life, is one of the more popular books on this topic I think?) and see what some of the different experts say. I do believe there is something to this.

The one example she gives that I keep going back to is eating an avocado on a piece of toast vs an egg on a piece of toast. The avocado and toast take three to four hours to leave the stomach (yes, just the stomach!) and the egg and toast take upwards of EIGHT hours. The avocado/toast combo allows your body to get back to work strengthening and rejuvenating itself, whereas the egg/toast combo is a huge drain on your system. Especially considering you’ll eat again before those eight hours are up and create a huge backlog in your digestive system.

The food combination part is going to be more of a challenge for me than eating raw foods. But I’m still ready and willing to experiment and play around with the ideas presented in this book. I’m not aiming for perfection here, but I am hoping to move in what I’d like to think is the right direction. The things she says raw foods and proper food combining can do for weight loss are really appealing. Basically, weight loss is effortless and there’s no need to count calories, measure food, etc. That doesn’t mean you can go hog wild of course, but with the right foods and combinations, you can eat until you are satisfied with no worries about calories or portion sizes.

Let me say here that I am not looking to lose a large amount of weight, I know that I’m at a health weight. But I wouldn’t mind getting a little leaner and I feel there are still areas in my diet that have room for improvement. I still fight cravings and I already know from experience that my cravings for carby foods (like cereal, sweets, etc) are diminished when I stay away from refined carbs altogether and get the majority of carbs from fruits and vegetables. I also find that I have more energy, during my runs especially, when I’m eating generous amount of green vegetables.

I’m anxious to read more on these topics, from beginners and experts alike. I haven’t read anything else on raw foods besides this book and a some personal experiences from blogs. I also would like to know more about eating raw as an athlete.

I’d like to read some of her more recent books, as she lost a little credibility with me when she recommends SPLENDA (!!) as a sweetener option!! Splenda? Really?? This book was published in 2005 so I certainly hope she has since changed her tune with that item in her list for acceptable sweeteners.

I also want to read what other raw food authors have to say, along with RD’s and what the skeptics say too. I do not plan to become a 100% raw foodist any time soon, she actually advises against jumping into this program too quickly, and thus describes 5 different levels (determined by a your medical and eating history) to ease yourself into it. She talks about her own journey in the book and that it took years to get to where she is now. She describes her typical day and I can say with certainty that I am definitely NOT interested in taking it to her level any time soon.

I will say that I ate raw all weekend, with a few exceptions including a piece of chocolate cake for dessert on Saturday night. 😉 I had a great 7 mile run this morning and have felt surprisingly good and craving free all weekend too. I feel this is definitely worth exploring further. I’m always up for trying new things and like seeing what changes I can make to improve my health along with the health of my family as well.

Zak, who was a vegetarian for about a year or so before me, is totally on board and said today he feels like this is the direction he wants to go as well.

I’m looking forward and am excited to see what following a largely raw, properly combined diet can do for me! At this point I do recommend reading this book if you are interested in learning more about a raw food diet.

More Baby Food

July 2nd, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (5 Comments)

Zak wanted to swim laps at the pool this morning so I was home with snoozing offspring and left to my own devices with a family room workout. I cranked out 45 minutes of cardio and resistance training a la 30 Day Shred, Levels 2 and 3, plus some extra push ups and planks just to make sure I was really suffering.

Sweaty and satisfied? Check. On to a spankin’ new breakfast.

Overnight Oatbran, an idea I stole borrowed from Homegirl Brooke and with a few clickety clicks realized it started with SnackFace Kailey.

overnight_oatbran

Given I’m such an overnight oats fanatic and have also enjoyed a bowl of oatbran or two in my day, I knew this was definitely worth a trial run. Prepped in typical overnight oats fashion, but oatbran in place of oats.

All dressed up with bananas and almond butter.

all_dressed_up

And coffee too.

with_coffee

It was definitely creamy and dreamy, who cares if I’ve eaten enough food soft and mushy baby food for my previous two meals. If it’s good I’m shoveling it in and taking names later.

I’m going to make even more baby food to bring along with us when we meet up with Zak for his annual company picnic this afternoon.

Maybe I’ll graduate back to solid foods at some point today. Wish me luck.

Pea Soup

July 1st, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Life - (10 Comments)

Party in the park!

kids

We had fun at the park today with rulers and colored pencils learning about vertical lines, horizontal lines, diagonal lines, and the different kind of shapes we can make with these lines. Good stuff.

Maxine wants to hear that last bit on “vertical lines” one more time though.

consider

We worked on our balance and poise a bit too.

balance

Running short on time, I threw everything portable I had into a bag before we ran out the door. We had a small lunch at the park, lets call this Lunch Part I.

A larabar impostor. Never had this before, it was a freebie. It was ok, not bad, but not great either.

thinkfruit

Some beat up but still yummy snap peas.

snap_peas

The girls and I split this not so great, very chalky ThinkThin chocolate bar. This was another freebie and I’m glad I didn’t spend any money on it. Rest assured I won’t be spending on money on these in the future either.

thinkthin

On the way home we hit up the hippy dippy grocery co-op that I rarely get to.

My booty:

hookedup

That would be a big container 2% plain chobani (!!), honey chobani (on sale!), I replenished my Larabar stash and the best for last…

BULK nut butters!

After I put my eyes back in my head and picked my jaw up off the floor I immediately scooped me up some almond butter and cashew butter! I’ve always wanted to try cashew butter but have not wanted to buy a whole jar of it. This was perfect!

And check out the price?!

receipt

Considering it’s nearly $10 a lb for a jar of Woodstock Farms AB (my fav and totally worth it) and Cashew Butter is even more, I think I’ll be visiting the bulk nutter store again very soon. They also had bulk pb, tahini and a “free for all” (mixed) nut butter too. Healthy food heaven.

And oh yeah we also bought two small packages of “Snackimals” cookies for my two snack animals. 😉

So let’s call this Lunch Part II. A green smoothie with spinach, vanilla soy milk and frozen mango and some granola on top. Plus the last of my 2% cottage cheese and some strawberry and blueberry lovin!

lunch_part_2

And of course I couldn’t wait to take my cashew butter for a spin.

choc

Pure. Bliss.

While I made dinner I had dessert first. I couldn’t wait. The new almond butter was just begging to go on a date. This, x3

ab_date

Mmmm almond butter on my thumb. Classy.

For dinner I made a totally new recipe, Jenna from Eat, Live Run’s vegan split pea soup. I’m not sure I’ve EVER had split pea soup before (though I know my mom made it when I was a kid, HI MOM!), but this turned out pretty dang good. We’ve got a bunch now to last a few days of leftovers for lunch and dinners!

Although I’ll admit the looks of it reminded me a lot of jarred baby food peas. I had my baby food with Guiltless Gourmet baked blue tortilla chips on the side.

peasoup

And I now present you with the obligatory joke:

After everything I say, you say “Pea Soup”.

What’d you have for breakfast?

_______.

What’d you have for lunch?

_______.

What’d you have for dinner?

_______.

What’d you have for a snack?

_______.

What’d you do all night?

Duathlon

July 1st, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (6 Comments)

Out the door first thing this morning for a 4.2 mile run in 34 minutes. I took it easy and just enjoyed a jaunt around the neighborhood. A perfectly cool, sunny morning with my girlfriend Jillian.

Once I got home to find everyone still sleeping, I decided to take a cool down ride and rode the long way to my little grocery store to pick up coffee knowing we were out. After I read Master Your Metabolism a few months ago and along with listening to Jillian talk on and on about the pesticides that conventionally grown coffee beans are covered in, I decided it was worth it to make the switch to organic.

I was shocked to find this store had organic coffee. You know organics are catching on when the little rinky dink smells-like-they-mopped-the-floor-with-fish-guts corner grocery store is carrying Green Mountain and Newman’s Own Organic Coffees.

coffee_bag

I was positively STARVING by the time I got home and whipped up a big cereal mess in the kitchen.

Look at the time! No wonder I was hungry!

cereal_mess

Is someone gonna do those dishes in the sink or what?

A base of 2% Fage, layers of ground flax, Heart to Heart, homemade granola, bananas and a scoop of almond butter.

And hard earned coffee with a few glugs of organic 1% with my good friend Google Reader.

Off on another kiddie adventure today for an informal art project put together by a homeschooling mom friend. Packing lunch again along with art supplies and fish guts. You know, just in case someone wants me to mop their floor.

A Few Hints

June 30th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Dinner Time - (16 Comments)

We had a great day at the children’s museum today, despite having all the children of the city there to join us. It rained all day and apparently we weren’t the only ones who had the brilliant idea to find something fun to do indoors today.

I’ll spare you the 100 photographs I took and instead share just a few of my favorites.

First up!

Guess who tied this shoe?? (Hint: NOT ME!)

tie_shoe

I practically fell over this morning when she tied her own shoe. She’s been working on it for weeks now. No pressure here, this is all her. She finally got it this morning and has told every stranger on the street “the big news”, as she put it.

Yes, those are her exact words. The BIG news.

Guess who didn’t listen to the “5 items only” rule? (Hint: someone who is just learning how to count.)

less_than_5

Guess who’s moving to Alaska? (Can’t think of a clever hint, but that’s what Ava said this post card said as she read it to me.)

alaska

Guess who can’t get this song out of her head? (Hint: someone old enough to know the slinky song.)

slinky

And guess who had a fun flash from the past at the Videotopia today? (Hint: 1988 called, they want their video games back)

super_mario

I heart Super Mario.

After such a busy day, I still managed to scrape together enough energy to make dinner.

Veggie Spaghetti Pie

The Crust: Half a pound of whole wheat spaghetti, cooked and drained. Stir in a splash of oil, 1 egg (beaten) and a few shakes of parm.

crust

The Cheese: 1 cup 2% cottage cheese, 1 cup shredded mozzarella, 1 egg (beaten) and a few shakes of parm and frozen, thawed spinach.

cheese

The Sauce: diced onion, garlic, mushroom, shredded carrots, zucchini sauteed in olive oil. Crushed tomatoes stirred in once veggies are soft.

sauce

Layer spaghetti, cheese and sauce into a 9 x 13 inch pan. Bake 20 minutes at 350, uncovered. Top with parm or mozzarella and bake an additional 5 minutes. Allow 5 – 10 minutes to cool and enjoy!

This could also be called “Lazy Man’s Lasagna”.

I was ready to eat when I put this in the oven, so I put my salad together and chowed that down while I waited for it to bake.

salad

The best part about eating a huge salad before the entree is that by the time the spaghetti pie was ready, I was no longer starving and ate a smaller piece than I probably would have otherwise!

spaghetti_pie

I’ve recently learned that using cottage cheese in place of ricotta is not only a huge calorie saver, but is not at all gross like I fully expected it to be. I also am not usually a fan of whole wheat pasta but in a dish like this, I don’t even notice it.

So yes, a rainy day… but there’s always a silver lining!

Today is a rest day, as promised to myself yesterday. And what perfect timing, the old man was totally snoring when I woke up at 5:15. (i.e., it was pouring rain, did you catch that?)

Please note that I do usually NOT wake up this early in the winter. Or even spring or fall for that matter. When the sun is up and the children are sleeping I can’t help but bound out of bed and soak up the peace and quiet while it lasts. I love the extended daylight hours in the summer.

A rest day in my book is defined as such:

Rest Day (noun)

1. No cardio or resistance training
2. Yoga is acceptable

So as you can see, yoga still falls into my rest category. Today was Gentle Hatha Yoga #1 and #2 from YogaDownload.com after I spent some time online and had a chance to wake up a bit.

I love these Gentle Hatha Yoga sessions. Nothing too challenging, but still a great stretch and a chance to start the day feeling alert and centered.

After yoga it was time for cookies and coffee.

But let’s not kid ourselves.

Today we’re heading to the Museum of Play with some friends for some serious playing!

Play (verb)

1. To have fun
2. To employ freedom of choice in activity, amuse oneself while using imagination
3. No dishes, cleaning, cooking, laundry for an entire morning and afternoon

Off to pack a lunch and get my gang put together and out the door!

Never again will I look at overripe bananas and think “maybe I’ll make banana bread”.

Forget banana bread. Banana bread is stupid.  Banana Whip is where it’s at.

Here, let me prove it to you.

If you’ve got even 1 banana in your house, run to the kitchen right now.  (wait.  finish reading first.)  Do not pass Go.  Do not collect $200.

Peel and then slice into cut into 1/2 to 1 inch chunks.

Slicing Bananas to Make Banana Whip

(note that your bananas don’t have to be overripe, but the riper the banana, the sweeter your Banana Whip will be – thus a great way to put overripe bananas to good use.)

Pop into the freezer.

Into the Freezer

Consider freezing your bananas flat on a cookie sheet if you have the room in your freezer. If not, freeze them in a bowl and then just dig them out a butter knife later – doing your best to avoid sending banana chunks flying across the room while doing so.

Frozen Bananas

Ready to take those babies for a spin?

Frozen bananas into the Food Processor

You will probably have to stop the food processor a few times to scrape frozen bananas down from the sides and back into the center toward the blade. For a while it will look like those frozen ice cream balls dippin’ dots, but then suddenly, before your very eyes – something happens.

Banana magic.

Seriously?

Whipped Banana

Seriously.

Banana Whip

What you see is what you get – frozen bananas in the food processor for about 3 minutes.  That’s it.

It’s by some bananamiracle that something bananamagical happens with the gums found in bananas when frozen. It’s those frozen gums that turn ordinary frozen banana slices to be into a whipped glorious sweet and healthy treat you see there.  Freeze your gums on that.

I discovered Banana Whip after reading Gena’s life changing post and oh yes, Banana Whip has change my life.  Because once you try Banana Whip and marvel over its simplicity, you start to see all the other whipped banana adventures you can go on.  The addition of nut butters, coconut, blueberries, strawberries, chocolate chips, cocoa powder, pour into popsicle molds, refreeze and then make a banana whip ice sculpture to for your next party.

Be warned: even with my heavy duty full size Cuisinart, frozen bananas make my food processor dance across the counter upon start up.

If you don’t have a beast of a food processor, consider slicing your bananas into even smaller pieces before freezing them or thaw slightly before whipping them into shape.

Did you know Banana Whip is even in the Urban Dictionary? (If you are modest and easily embarrassed don’t click here.) All I want to know is… what is a “Van Dell”? Or maybe I don’t want to know.

While it tastes best fresh, the leftovers (leftovers??) can go back into the freezer to be scooped out like regular ice cream later.

Leftover Banana Whip Can Go Back Into the Freezer

Go on now!  Whip it!  Whip it good.
