The Juice Gods Are Smiling At Me

July 14th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (5 Comments)

Check out this email I that was waiting for me from Zak’s Aunt Ellen when I got home from my bike ride this morning!

Funny you should mention a juicer. The other day I was thinking that you might like my Dad’s juicer that has been looking for a new home, after having sat on my basement shelf for some time now. It is an ACME Supreme Juicerator Model 5001. My Dad was definitely ahead of his time as he was using flax seed oil, some raw foods and other nutritional ideas back in the day. You are welcome to try it out and see if it meets your needs. If it meets your needs you may keep it. If it doesn’t, you may still keep it!

Thank you Ellen!

Blessed by the juice gods, it was time for some new NOT cantaloupe orange fleshed melon before my bike ride.

orange_flesh

No, it’s NOT cantaloupe (ZAK!) NO someone did NOT trick me at the grocery store (ZAK!) and NO it does not taste just like cantaloupe. (ZAK!)

It sort of tastes like honey? Honeydew maybe? CANTALOUPE is different I tell ya!

My ride was glorious a 12 miles in 50 minutes. I’ve learned to savor and soak up every moment of summer morning glory because before we know it it’s going to be dark and cold in the mornings and I’ll be shoveling myself out of bed and slithering to the bathroom instead of doing a back handspring from the mattress directly into my sneakers and running out the door before I’ve wiped the crusties from my eyes.

I decided last night that I was willing to risk a little improper food combining and went with a breakfast cookie this morning. It’s been a LONG time my friend! Too long!

I’ve found that I prefer mine with more moist and mushy. The original calls for less milk so don’t be afraid to play around with the ingredients until you get it right. I’ll also say that I didn’t fall in love with these until after I’d made a few of them, so if you don’t get it right the first time, I vote to TRY, TRY AGAIN!

About a 1/2 cup of oats with 1/2 mashed banana and a scoop of almond butter, ground flax, a few sliced almonds and a generous splash of almond milk all swirled together and flattened onto a plate to become breakfast cookie goodness overnight.

tues_breakfast_cookie

Topped this morning with strawberries and bananas.

I’m curious to see what the Food Combining Gods to do me today…

The Scream

July 13th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (6 Comments)

I’m starting to really wonder about my cat and his will to live.

cat

With no work out yesterday I was more than ready to get out run this morning. An easy 4 in 33 minutes.

I came home to put together lunch for Zak and ate strawberries with reckless abandon for Breakfast Part I.

A short while later I was ready to make up for yesterday’s less than stellar bowl of cookie batter oats. Things had definitely improved today.

1/2 c of steel cut oats mixed with 3 chopped dates, coconut, flax seed in 1/2 c almond milk overnight. Slopped into the blender and I SLOWLY added a splash or two of almond milk when the blender needed more liquid to work with.

Today’s was the perfect consistency. I found myself scraping the blender and licking the spatula clean much like I would like to lick the bowl of cookie batter, but without the salmonella paranoia. If my blender opening was a little bigger I can’t say I wouldn’t have risked getting “batter” on my eyebrows and my hair tangled around the blender blade.

With a spoonful of almond butter and a couple more pieces of date, I felt like I had seen today’s bowl somewhere before…

the_scream

Think think think…

the_real_scream

Hmmm it will come to me eventually.

Changes

July 12th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Life - (7 Comments)

I was hungry sort of early today for lunch. This felt like more a snack than lunch. I made fast guac (avocado and salsa!) with some carrot legs to chomp on.

avocado_bread carrot_legs

A few hours later Maxine and I were headed out to visit a friend. I was hungry and knew I had to eat before we left. In days gone by it would have been pretty typical to grab a handful of Kashi crackers and some hummus as a quick, healthy, out the door snack. I’m not knocking this as a healthy snack option, this is of course better than something from the fast food drive thru. I’ve just come to discover, especially this past week and the disappearance food cravings… any processed foods, organic or not, seem to be what sends me into a downward spiral with craving sugar and more processed carbs.

So instead of my old usual, I whipped up a fast salad. It really only took a few minutes since a lot of this stuff was prepped and ready to go. Plus there was really no other option, since I haven’t replaced these the sorts of foods I thought were so innocent, once they were finished up.

Mixed greens with tomatoes and the last of the marinated portobellos. I used the portobello marinade as dressing on the greens!

sunday_salad

And a Larabar for the road. Fast fats.

larabar_road

Max and I got to our friend’s house only to discover she wasn’t there! So we hung out in the car and amused ourselves with an apple and a camera.

After we got home the whole family spent some time working in the garden… weeding and digging up what will be a future strawberry patch.

future_strawberries

I was so happy to discover this little guy on the cucumber plant during my weeding extravaganza!

baby_cucumber

I coo’d at him and promised to be gentle when I sink my teeth into him in just a few weeks.

After a full day, I had nothing really planned for dinner and I had no idea what to make. I really wanted to stick with mainly raw foods, so I went with easy.

I had started soaking some raw cashews earlier in the day to give Gena’s raw mayo a test drive. OK, making your own raw mayo probably doesn’t sound “easy”, but throwing ingredients into the food processor and scraping them out into a bowl falls into the easy category for me these days. I followed her recipe and threw in some sun-dried tomatoes to boot.

Dinner was a veggie sandwich on Ezekiel bread with raw mayo.

cashew_sdt_mayo

And a sea of salad.

sea_of_salad

More mixed greens, tomatoes, green pepper, shredded zucchini, raw sunflower seeds and ginger miso dressing.

I say with certainty that avoiding processed foods has helped me immensely with battling food cravings. I think eating a lot of fruit is satisfying my sweet tooth as well, and I’m easily satisfied with just a little dark chocolate each day. In the past I would have days where I would be fine, but the craving for something REALLY sweet, like ice cream or cake and frosting would build and build until I couldn’t stand it anymore and would cave. And often times end up overdoing it.

Yes, yesterday we went out for ice cream, but it was different. I didn’t feel like if I didn’t have ice cream I would run screaming into the night. It was just a fun spur of the moment treat and I didn’t feel like I needed a ton of ice cream to feel like I’d had enough.

Looking back at today’s pictures I realized how the changes I’ve worked toward have made a real difference for me, and that makes me very happy. Even when I think I have healthy eating figured it out, I’m reminded that this really is a journey and there are going to be bumps in the road. I’m sure I still don’t have all the answers. The key is to get back up and keep going, keep experimenting and keep an open mind too.

When you finally get some of the results you are after, it’s so worth the time and effort invested.

Lazy Laundry Sunday

July 12th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Life - (5 Comments)

Call us crazy, but we don’t have cable television. When we moved into our house four years ago we decided we would just use old fashioned rabbit ears and skip cable to save some money. Let me be clear that this was not my idea, but I went with it.

Turns out it was one of the best things we ever did. We watch way less TV because of it, and the girls watch movies from the library or shows on PBS. I like that they aren’t subjected to the advertising on TV. With the new converter boxes the digital signal comes in crystal clear and we have a few more channels to boot.

No cable saves us money and time too. Instead of staying up late channel surfing after the kids are asleep, I end up going to bed too. In bed early –> easier to get up early and have time to fit in exercise. I guess I’ve swapped TV time for exercise time. Deal or No Deal really wasn’t making that much a difference in my life anyway.

That said, sometimes I DO wish there was something more to watch on TV. Like this morning when I swapped work out time for laundry folding time.

Instead I dug through my VHS collection (wow, no cable and still use a VCR? How cool am I?) and was reminded of the comments on this post when I saw Pretty Woman on the shelf. A movie from my adolescence that I haven’t watched in years. (Kiddos still asleep! 😉 )

pretty_laundry

I was amused to watch this again realizing how much of this movie I didn’t understand as a kid. The obvious didn’t get by me, but so much of the adult conversation about business, politics, relationships went totally over my head as an 11 or 12 year old. It was fun to watch this again this morning with a new perspective.

I noshed on some strawberries while I folded. And folded. And folded.

sunday_strawberries

Once I felt hungry again I blended up my steel cut oats I soaked overnight.

steel_cut_oats

I soaked a half cup of steel cut oats with two chopped dates, ground flax and cocoa powder overnight in a half cup of almond milk.

Threw the whole thing into the blender with a few more glugs of almond milk and topped with some shredded coconut and raw almond butter.

Today’s bowl was not that great. I added too much almond milk when I put it in the blender and it was really soupy. I think I should have used more dates too because it wasn’t as sweet as I like it to be. I wonder if the cocoa powder messed with the taste and sweetness too. It still disappeared but I’ll have to pay closer attention to the mix next time around.

Today is an official rest day, I’m way behind on some things around the house (laundry!) and am glad to have the extra time today to get caught up.

New Concepts

July 11th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (4 Comments)

I’m still on the fence about running the Rochester Marathon this year, which is in mid September. I trained for it last year, but really it was all about just doing it AND I used it as motivation to have a guide and a schedule to make sure I was getting out there and exercising daily to help me stay on track with losing weight.

That said, it was an amazing experience and I wouldn’t mind doing it again, but I’m still not sure. So at this point I’m loosely following the training plan I used last year. Basically I’m just using it as a guide for how far I should be running for long runs on the weekends. This would be the end of week 9 of the 18 week training plan, with the marathon this year on Sunday, September 13th.

I planned to run 12 miles this morning, since my last long run two weeks ago was 10.

I started my morning with a frosty cold one.

frosty_cold_one

A fruit smoothie with a mish mash of frozen and fresh fruit. Strawberries, bananas, blueberries, mango and a splash of almond milk for some liquid to give the blender a hand.

I took it slow and ran the first 7 in an 1:00:00 (exactly!) making my pace 8:34.

I stopped back at the house for a little fuel. I was going to break into a bag of Sport Beans but decided on a whim to swap them out for something better.

sport_beans sport_watermelon

WHY would I eat jellybeans when I’ve got cold fresh watermelon in my fridge?? Don’t get me wrong, Sport Beans are great when you are far from home or in the middle of a marathon and you need easy portable sugar, but it didn’t occur to me until I was almost home that I should just eat the real thing since it was so easy and accessible. I polished off the last of the melon and even drank all the watermelon juice from the container too.

I finished up with a 5.28 loop at a slower pace in 46:14 making my pace for the second leg 8:45. I was definitely feeling tired by the end and ready to be done.

My average pace for the whole run was 8:39 and I feel pretty good about that.  I have to say thank you to the my long run idol Robin for helping me come to realize it’s ok to slow the hell down and run at a comfortable pace for long runs right from the start, rather than running fast at the beginning and being forced to slow way down at the end because I’m beat. I’ve read this 100 times before in magazines and message boards but somehow seeing  how a real person incorporates these concepts into their runs makes it seem “real” and do-able.  I probably could have gone even slower but I’m still working on it and getting a feel for what it’s like.

Once home I was ready for another bowl of cookie batter.

post_run_cookie_batter

I used up the last of my oat groats and subbed in steel cut oats to total a half cup, added ground flax, coconut and two chopped dates and soaked the whole mix over night in almond milk. I threw the mess into the blender this morning and came out with what I swear totally feels like I’m eating a huge bowl of cookie batter.

another_one

I am such a dope. I didn’t realize until yesterday that steel cut oats are just cut oat groats! So they worked perfectly for my cookie batter breakfast which is good because oat groats aren’t easy to come by.

Lots to do today, off I go.

It's a Wrap

July 10th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Good Reads - (5 Comments)

I sat down to lunch this afternoon after I finished up the last 25% of our lawn that I didn’t get to yesterday.

More marinated portobellos on a bed of greens tossed in my Ginger Miso dressing.

710_lunch

After lunch I set out on a bike ride to run some errands and get in a little unofficial exercise too. Want to go with me? Let’s roll.

bike

First up, the post office about 1 mile away, to mail a package and a letter.

post_office

Next, the library, about 4 miles from the Post Office,

library

to return a book that Ava picked out a few weeks ago. Really? Are you sure you want a book from the 70’s on roses? NO! I demand you take out a book about Dora.

roses

I picked up a couple I had on reserve and one from the new shelf too.

books

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell (thanks for this idea Lynn!), The Raw 50 by Carol Alt and The NDD Book (Nutrition Deficit Disorder) by Dr. William Sears, one of my fav attachment parenting authors. I snagged this one off the new shelf after a quick flip through.  It’s all about how the foods that kids eat affect their behavior, and is full of ideas on how to get kids to eat the healthy foods you offer them.

After the library, another 1.5 miles to the grocery store.

wegmans

My list.

list

My loot in my backpack, ready to rock and roll.

backpack

3.5 miles to home. This was definitely the hardest leg of my journey, with the groceries on my back.

Round trip, 10 miles exactly! 44 minutes of riding.

ten_miles 44min

Total time spent riding and running errands, an hour and 15 minutes.

total_time

Errands run, exercise done. No gasoline was burned and I was forced to stick to my list due to my limited amount of “trunk” space. I should probably always shop this way.

I had something totally new in mind for us for dinner tonight. I prepped a bunch of veggies to stuff into lettuce wraps!

rainbow_veggies

My mom had mentioned a while ago that she’s been enjoying Boston Bibb lettuce lately. Since the leaves are so broad I thought it would make for a good wrap.

lettuce_wraps

I also made a teriyaki sauce from The Raw Food Detox Diet made with soy sauce, maple syrup, ginger, garlic, sesame seeds and sesame oil to drizzle inside on the veggies before they were wrapped up.

I won’t lie that these were a total mess to eat, but I got better at making and eating them when I figured out to forget about “wrapping” the veggies with lettuce and make lettuce tacos instead.

I was bummed that Zak had to work late and miss this dinner because I thought this was a totally fun and different meal. Basically just salad in disguise, but the teriyaki sauce definitely made this dinner!

And of course my day is not complete without some Green and Black 70% Dark Chocolate with raw almond butter to round out my meal.

gb_raw_ab

I think I used up all my energy today and had none left for jokes tonight. Crap.

Let’s Get Physical

July 10th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (6 Comments)

I am done teaching my kids how to do stuff for themselves.

bowl_of_oj

I decided to forgo my morning out and ate my weight in watermelon instead.

my_weight_in_watermelon

Who needs to run when there are toys to pick up? Cherrios to be vacummed? Clothes to be folded? Dishes to be put away? More fruit to eat?

strawberries berries

The girls are off with Saint Ellen today while I chip away at a self imposed to do list with approximately 167.25 items on it.

I love eating three part breakfasts. How come no one told me about this sooner?

I decided today Oat Groat Pudding is not the right name for this concoction. Oat Groat Cookie Batter is more accurate.

cookie_batter

Yes, I ate two of my three breakfasts this morning at my computer. Don’t judge me.

keyboard_breakfast

I’d call today a rest day but a few of the items on my agenda made me want to sing a certain Olivia Newton John song. But then I googled the lyrics and and watched the video on YouTube and realized maybe that’s not exactly the song I want to use to paint a picture of what I’ll be doing in place of exercise today.

Finishing the lawn and riding my bike to run some errands, nothing at all to do with the contents of an early 80’s racy confusing workout music videos.

Did you know when I was a kid I thought “Olivia Newton John” was a three person band with it’s members named Olivia, Newt and John? Yeah, that probably explains why I didn’t know what that song was really about or what the video contained.

Meeting Minutes

July 9th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Late Night Craziness - (4 Comments)

Meeting called to order: 9:30 AM

All present: Yours truly.

New Business:

After my fruit buzz wore off this morning, I tried something new with oatmeal for Breakfast Part III.

Or I guess it really started last night.

I found oat groats at a local health food store and decided I’d try to make some oatmeal concoction with them.

I soaked oat groats, sliced almonds and a couple of chopped dates overnight in almond milk.

This is what it looked like this morning. Inedible, swollen oat groats (sounds like you need to see a doctor ma’am).

soaked_oat_groats

Plan B: Throw the whole chewy whole mess in the blender. I wound up with what I can only call oat groat pudding.

oatmeal_pudding

It was…. different, but I liked it. The dates made it really sweet, and the texture was enjoyable. Topped with a few more dates and some shredded unsweetened organic coconut.

oat_pudding

Turns out oat groats aren’t any more raw than regular rolled oats, but I didn’t bother to google that until after my experiment. Oh well, I tried. It was worth it because I think this will be a new breakfast for a while. I need to burn out my existing blender before I can talk Zak into a VitaMix.

Activities for today:

I mowed our long-overdue lawn and bribed my best gal pal Sharon with lunch if she would entertain 4 small children while I did so.

Old Business:

Two head sized salads, mine was tossed in my homemade Ginger Miso dressing.

salad_for_lunch

With some 2% plain Chobani (dare I say better than Fage?) for a little creamy goodness, topped with sliced almonds and coconut.

chobani

After lunch came an impromtu trip to the Museum of Play with friends for a couple of hours of serious playing.

quick_trip

Check it! Dance par-tay!

dance_video

Here’s Maxine putting in her request for how many Barbie’s she wants for her birthday.

barbies

Noted. But you’ve still got two more months kid.

A post play Larabar snack.

larabar_snack

Uninspired, I wasn’t in the mood to whip up anything new for dinner. Easy is avocado spelled backwards. Or something.

Avocado tomato open faced sandwiches on toasted sesame Ezekiel bread.

sandwich_dinner

More New Business:

I was in a green smoothie mood, but I did not care to repeat the thick non-sweet green beast of yesteryear. So I brewed Tazo mint tea:

refresh

And threw a couple ice cubes in to make it cold.

I snacked on some carrots waiting for my tea to get iced, and when it was ready I threw about half in the blender with 2 or 3 handfuls of spinach and some agave nectar.

Holy frothy GREEN tea goodness!

green_tea

This was THE BEST green drink I’ve had. I don’t mind spinach in smoothies at all, but since I’m giving the food combining a whirl and I’m eating fruit alone, I’m not putting fruit in green smoothies for the moment. This was AWESOME. There was NO pulp, it was just sort of thick? I loved it and will absolutely be making this again.

More Old Business:

Called it dinner with some unphotographed Vitamin C(hocolate).

Motion to Adjourn: 9:10 PM

I hope you took notes.

Wednesday Ride

July 8th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (8 Comments)

I was excited to get up and go for a long bike ride this morning. I love running but riding is great too. I love how much farther I can go in less time, riding through town and through the neighborhoods in the early morning hours when it’s quiet and there’s hardly any traffic. In just under an hour I managed to go 15 miles.

Before I left on my ride I finished up the last of the cut up watermelon, so I spent some time this morning prepping more melon among other fruits and veggies.

morning_melon

Once I noticed I was hungry again I dove in my overnight oats. Rolled oats, sliced almonds, chopped dates, ground flax and coconut soaked overnight in almond milk.

78oats

My dad is off this week and we’ve got plans to meet up with him this afternoon for some fun. After a low key day around the house yesterday it will be nice to get out and do something today.

A Totally RAWesome Day

July 7th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Motivation - (Comments Off on A Totally RAWesome Day)

Prepare yourself for a blow by blow my almost unbelievable day.

Remember way back to my Breakfast Part I and Breakfast Part II this morning? Yup, me too. I was good to go until nearly 1:00.

This is CRAZY TALK. Most days, especially days when we stay home and don’t go anywhere, I’m ready to eat NOW and lunch is typically on the early side.

Today for lunch I made a lettuceless salad.

An entire zucchini, shredded
An entire ear of corn, raw and sliced off the cob
An entire avocado, diced
A bunch of grape tomatoes, sliced in half.

Into the bowl and mixed with last night’s Carrot Ginger Dressing.

So. Good.

zucc_salad

I’d planned to save half for Zak for dinner. But I couldn’t help myself and ate the whole dang thing. It was easy enough to make I figured I’d just whip up another one for him for dinner.

Considering I ate what I thought was two servings, it seemed like a lot at the time. But then I thought about it: an ear of corn, a zucchini, an avocado, some tomatoes and dressing? It’s really not that much. It was totally filling and satisfying even without any bread or crackers, hummus smeared sandwich or wrap to go along side it, like I would otherwise normally eat and have this salad on the side.

Some dark chocolate and raw almond butter for a finishing touch.

choc_raw_ab

Raw almond butter is definitely different than the roasted almond butter I usually eat. I’ll say now that I like roasted better but I’m willing to let the raw AB grow on me a bit.

Now here we go again… normally I’m watching the clock wondering when I get to have a snack. But today I was too busy playing, vacuuming, scrubbing the kitchen and bathroom floors with a scrub brush and toothbrush on my hands and knees… I felt like I had endless energy. Around 4 we ran out the door to get a couple of groceries (MORE PRODUCE) and I thought about having a little something as my natural inclination is to eat something before we go anywhere, so I’m not out and about as a raging hungry lunatic trying to herd cats.

I questioned my hunger and it was practically non-existent so out we went at 4pm, girls topped off with a snack but nothing for moi.

A week ago this would have been UNHEARD of.

As we were heading home about 45 minutes later I noticed this strange feeling in my stomach. Not a bad feeling, just the realization that my stomach was empty. I even heard it growl. But I didn’t FEEL hungry. It’d been almost 4 hours since my last meal, which was properly combined so it made sense that it moved through my system in about 3 – 4 hours. But no hunger? Really? Who is this girl?

I don’t know if I’ve clearly expressed yet at how truly shocked I am by this. Normally I am hungry and totally grumpy and irritable until I’ve had something to eat, especially if I’m at the “growling stomach” hunger point.

I had put bananas in the freezer this morning for my afternoon snack. It was about 5pm when I decided I’d make whipped bananas as planned, knowing bananas take about 45 minutes to go through your stomach (all other fruits are 30 min) and I’d probably be ready for dinner around 6 or 6:30.

My mom was here just in time to experience the wonder that is whipped bananas.

banana_whip_snack

Around 7:00 I made some new dressing and then got started putting a normal lettuceful dinner together.

I’m not sure what to call this, Miso Ginger I guess!

< 1/2 c canola oil
3 Tbsp NAKANO Rice Vinegar
2 1/2 Tbsp Miso Paste
1/2 a small onion, minced
2 Tbsp grated ginger and juice
Splash of lemon juice

I love rice vinegar, it has such a distinct flavor. Thanks NAKANO for the new bottle and an excuse to make a new raw salad dressing!

rice_vinegar

This is my cute little flounder that I use to grate ginger on.

flounder

I cut off the outer hard skin and then scrape the ginger nub on the flounder bumps and am presented wtih ginger mash and juice.

flounder_2

A typical salad… organic red leaf and green leaf lettuce, tomatoes, a small hunk of avocado, carrots, mushrooms, onions, green pepper, tossed with my fresh dressing.

77salad

And my happy ending; some almond milk hot chocolate.

hot_choc

Unsweetened cocoa powder mixed with warm almond milk and a little agave nectar. Pure bliss.

I don’t know if it’s the raw foods or the food combining, but whatever it is, it’s working. Even if I do nothing but maintain my weight and don’t lose the 5 – 10 vanity pounds (as Jillian puts it) I’d like to lose, I can live like this. I am practically giddy over how I felt today. Eating this way has really not been that hard, and the results make it that much easier to stick with it.

I think it’s also worth nothing that I haven’t been having anything to drink with meals lately. This morning I did have a cup of coffee but it was an hour or so after breakfast. Drinking fluids with meals dilutes digestive enzymes and slows down digestion. From the Raw Food Detox Diet, The more work it takes to break down your meal, the less weight you will lose and the more sluggish you will feel. Can you hear me pushing my water glass away at meal time from here?

I’ve also found that with all the fruit and vegetables I’ve been eating, I’m drinking less in general, but “everything else” (if you catch my drift) has stayed the same. Natalia explains in the book that the water that comes from raw fruits and vegetables is organic and contains all the vitamins, minerals and live enzymes from the plant. Organic water? I hope I’ve conveyed what a difference I’ve felt from this way of eating in just a matter of DAYS. I feel so blessed to have found this way of eating, this way of life! Thank you my raw food blogging friends for giving me the courage to live outside my comfort zone and discover this RAWesome way of life.
