Solid Food Returns

July 24th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Lunch - (4 Comments)

I set out for a hot, humid, sunny, ass sweaty run shortly after 12:00. Someone cuff me in the head and remind me why heading out for a run smack dab in the middle of a hot summer day is not the brightest idea I’ve ever had.

It was HOT! And HUMID! And did I mention I was sweaty?

I couldn’t decide how far I was going to go. I knew I wanted today to be a longer run though. I thought about 8 miles. I thought about stopping at the house after 7 for a drink and a little fuel and going out for 3 more. But once I got back after 7 miles that was it. I was done. I ran a comfortable pace and it took me an hour exactly.

I needed something cold and sweet and juicy – STAT.

grapes

Organic grapes (YAY) with seeds (NAY). That’ll teach me to read labels.

After my grape buzz wore off I made lunch and plopped myself down on the floor in the living room to watch more of Twilight. I started it last night but fell asleep on the couch. It was midnight crying out loud. I’m a totally pansy when it comes to staying up late.

For my carpet picnic: fresh made guac (avocado, diced tomato, minced garlic, salt and lemon) on toasted Ezekiel bread and a side of steamed broccoli and cauliflower with some parm on top.

carpet_picnic

And a couple squares of Newman’s Own Organics Chocolate.

chocolate_twilight

After lunch came house work and more house work. Then snack time.

Dried fruit and more dried fruit. With almond butter.

dried_fruit_1 dried_fruit_2

The girls came home and I had no idea what I wanted for dinner. Since I’m solo and the girls had already eaten with Ellen, I whipped up one of my favorite salad concoctions.

mondo_salad

Organic red leaf and green leaf lettuce, a chopped gala apple, raw cashews, Newman’s Own Organic dried cranberries, extra firm tofu chunks tossed in Organicville Ginger Miso dressing.

I wanted a little something sweet to “round out” the night… but has anyone seen my glasses??

cookie_glasses

Are you picking up on the subliminal message with my left hand there?

Also take note of the little hand on the right. I had to surrender my glasses and go back and fetch myself two more.

fri_two_cookies

I’m surprisingly satisfied on two cookies and am not feeling the need to go back and ransack the package for more. I was a little nervous having cookies in the house but so far so good. It’s much easier to resist them when they are on the shelf in the grocery store so that’s where I prefer to leave them.

I still haven’t finished my movie. Maybe I can get Thing 1 and Thing 2 into bed early here and finish it up before the TV turns into a pumpkin. Or something.

Liquid Diet

July 24th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (5 Comments)

The schedule is a little thrown off with Zakattack not here to stay with the girls while I run, ride or otherwise escape first thing in the morning. My run for today has been pushed back a couple of hours.

I started the morning out right with a glass of green lemonade, a la Natalia Rose.

I stocked up on ginger the last time I was at the grocery store. Considering I only use an inch or two at a time, I think this ginger tree should last me a while, no?

friday_green_juice

Today’s wonder of wonders contained the last of my romaine, a couple handfuls of spinach, an entire cucumber, an apple (with a bite out it – thank you Maxine), a lemon and two inches of ginger.

The girls have gone with Aunt Ellen for a fun filled day while I get some work done around here. And run.

Once they were on their way I decided on oats for breakfast, but I never put anything together last night so it wasn’t going to be in overnight form. I wasn’t feeling very stove-like this morning either.

So I settled on an oatmeal smoothie. I was pretty sure I saw Kath do this a while back.

almond_butter

I used an entire banana, a couple chunks of frozen banana, unsweetened vanilla hemp milk, ground flax, raw almond butter and rolled oats. Basically everything I would use to make oatmeal but thrown into the blender instead of a bowl. I measured nothing.

All gone.

all_gone

Wow, it’s barely 10 and I’ve already used two straws today. And I’ve yet to chew a thing. I guess I gave my teeth the morning off.

Life’s a Beach

July 22nd, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Dinner Time - (6 Comments)

My fruit and juice breakfast wore off by about 10:30, so I made a bowl of banana and chocolate oatbran before we headed out on today’s adventure.

choc_oatbran

Cooked on the stove with water and chocolate almond milk and cocoa powder. Topped with sliced banana, almond butter and coconut.

I threw a bunch of food into our lunch bag and off we went to meet some friends at the beach.

We played in the water.

ava_water

We played in the sand.

max_sand

I’m pretty sure taking a break for lunch was my idea.

Bucket’o PB&J for A&M.

bucketopbj

The last of the Chana Masala with a side of freshly picked wedgie for me.

left_over_chana

My little lunch time buddy.

lunch_buddy

Ava was too busy disrupting resting seagulls to stop and eat. Max and I enjoyed the show.

disturbed_seagulls

But pretty soon Maxine couldn’t resist the lure of bird chasing either.

chased_seagulls

Later we snacked on Newman’s Own Organics pretzels that we’d brought to share.

mighty_pretz

And apples with a view.

apple_with_a_view

I noshed on this Jocalat Chocolate Mint Larabar too. It was the first time I had this kind.

jocalot

It was pretty good, but left a weird aftertaste in my mouth. I think I’ll probably pass on this one next time but I was glad I tried it.

After a full day of fun in the sun, we had no choice but to stop at a sweet little country store for ice cream on the way home.

max_ice_cream ava_ice_cream

I passed on ice cream for myself (knowing full well that I would – and did – eat their left overs) and hit the dried fruit stand instead.

Of course I picked up a stash of my new fav, dried apples.

dried_fruit

And what are those green disks, you ask? Why they’re dried kiwi!

kiwi

They taste like…. nothing. I’m not kidding. They have NO taste. They are a little sweet and the texture is appealing but besides that it’s like eating slightly sweet and chewy dried air.

Dinner tonight was a head sized salad and broccamoli smeared on toasted Ezekiel sesame bread.

wed_dinner

It would appear to be totally caked on… and oh yes, it was. But the steamed broccoli makes up a lot of the volume so I piled it on and didn’t think twice.

broc

I did however, think twice about dessert.

carmel_cups

I had one two of these babies.

not_one_cup yes_two_green

Holy decadent! They come three to a package, 160 cals for the kit and caboodle. (I ate one yesterday!) I think the first person I heard talk about these was Jillian on her radio show *sniff sniff* so I ate these tonight in her honor.

And now the sun (and kids) have gone to bed and so must I.

Threes

July 22nd, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (10 Comments)

Last night’s post was canceled due to a meeting, eating only left overs and the absence of any picture taking yesterday.

I was totally bummed last night to read that one of my favorite healthy mama bloggers was forced to hang up her blogging hat.

I SWEAR TO YOU right after reading Sarah’s last post I thought: that would be like hearing Jillian isn’t going to do her radio show anymore.

This morning as I was getting ready for my run, I went to download Jillian’s podcast from her Sunday show, only to read this:

jillian_note

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

You have GOT to be kidding me. NO MORE JILLIAN on my runs? I haven’t listened to ANYTHING other than her podcasts on my runs for the past 4 months. Her radio show is that good.

Totally bummed (and a little shocked at my prophecy from last night – even though that was posted yesterday I really had no idea until this morning), I needed an old fashioned endorphin rush.

Some heart pumping, sweat inducing action with lots of pushing and grunting and maybe a little moaning and cursing too.

Time for some speed work.

I left the iPod at home – half in protest, half in a moment of silence for Jillian and half (yes three halves) because I couldn’t find it – I warmed up and after the first mile I started picking up my pace and sprinting for stretches and then falling back into my normal pace until I felt like I’d recovered and then sprinting again. I finished up 4.18 in 31:29, an average pace of 7:31. I’ll take it.

And it totally worked. My spirits were lifted and I hopped on my bike for a quick 3.5 mile/15 minute cool down ride. I wanted to get a little more than 30 minutes in today since I only got 30 minutes in yesterday.

With no time to prep an oatmeal concoction last night, I went with fruit this morning.

The rest of my strawbs and the rest of my bluebs too.

strawbs bluebs

And some green juice.

juicer

Green Lemonade fit for a one armed princess.

one_armed_princess

Bad news come in three’s right? Like celebrity deaths as of late. I’m waiting around for the third shoe to drop. Hopefully it’s just something mundane like not being able to finish my post because I lose my internet conn

What’s In a Name?

July 21st, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (15 Comments)

Just recently I told Ava that when I was pregnant with her, I wanted to name her Grace. Daddy wasn’t crazy about that name, and we eventually agreed on Ava. I also told her that I had first wanted Maxine to be named Leah, but that name was vetoed too.

Ava is often correcting me when I call her Ava saying “No, my name is _______”. Where _______ might be Zaza, Zandrea, Zander, Priscilla, and more recently, Leah. All sorts of stuffed cats, ponies and Barbies have recently taken on the name Leah as well.

On my bike ride this morning I was thinking that when I was little, I had wished my name was April. When playing with friends my “play name” would be April. We actually would fight over who got to be April, and often all ended up being April so we could get on with it.

april

But what I didn’t remember until the whole Leah scenario was that I started liking the name April when my mom told me as a child that April was one of the names she considered for me. (I also happened to be born in April.) One of the best things about having your own kids is your own fun childhood memories they dig up.

Today I’m a grown woman who is perfectly content with the name Alison. I think secretly wish Ava would let me call her Grace instead of Zaza or Leah though.

When you were little, did you ever wish your name was something else?

Zak had to be to work early this morning, but he also wanted to swim laps, so that gave me just over a half hour squeeze in a quick bike ride before he had to leave for work. I told him I would be back before 7:30, and when I got back in the house the clock on the stove said 7:29. Rock on.

8 miles in 31 minutes. I’ll take what I can get!

Chocolate overnight oats were on the menu for breakfast this morning.

1/2 c rolled oats mixed with about a 1/4 c Stonyfield Farm vanilla LF yogurt, 1/2 c unsweetened chocolate almond milk and tsp of unsweetened cocoa powder.

A Little of This

July 20th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Dinner Time - (10 Comments)

So today… there was a little of this.

a_little_of_that

A little of that.

deck

We broke for lunch and I made a little hummus sandwich. And took a giant picture of it.

Toasted Ezekiel bread with mustard, garlic hummus, red leaf and tomato.

hummus_sammie

And pretended I was a little dinosaur eating giant steamed trees.

parm

And steamed clouds.

Sometime between lunch and dinner came cookie time. We busted out the Newman’s Own Organics Champion Chip Cookies.

Observe.

cookie_4 cookie_1
cookie_2 cookie_3

I think they were acceptable.

Product placement at it’s finest.

product_placement

One thumb up from Ava. I think it would have been two thumbs up, but the other hand had a cookie in it.

ava_says

And if you couldn’t tell from these pictures, no, not a whole lot of cleaning got done today. Let’s just call my house “lived in”, shall we?

Mama had something else in mind for her snack.

mamas_snack

Green lemonade rulez. Same concoction as yesterday’s. Minus the compost rummaging.

[Insert funny, interesting, witty, clever segue here]

Dinner!

Now I’ll give a little disclaimer here that my eyes usually glaze over when I see a recipe with a lot of ingredients, but this one is worth it. Many items in the list are just spices so don’t glaze over like a doughnut just yet.

Chana Masala

1 Tbsp coconut oil
1 large onion, diced
1 pepper minced (bell pepper or poblano for a little heat)
1 clove of garlic, minced
1 inch fresh ginger, grated
1 tbsp curry powder
1 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
1 tsp paprika
1 tbsp garam masala
salt to taste
28 oz can diced tomatoes
1 cup of water or vegetable broth
2 cups cooked chick peas (or 2, 15 oz cans, rinsed and drained)
1 Tbsp lemon juice (or half a squeezed lemon)

Saute onions, peppers, garlic and ginger in oil until soft. Add spices and stir until vegetables are nicely coated. Add tomatoes and bring to a boil. Add chick peas and water or broth and bring to a boil, reducing to a simmer for 30 – 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add salt and lemon juice the end of cooking, serve over cooked rice or spaghetti squash.

chana_masala_2

If you aren’t a fan of spicy food, leave out the cayenne and the hot pepper. It’s also worth noting that I only estimated with the spices here. In real life I’m pretty generous with the spices and I think I’m more reserved in the recipe here, so spice it up to your own taste. How many more times can I use the word spice in this paragraph? Spice. I guess I’m pretty generous with the word spice too.

chana_masala

What do you think? Is that picture over the top? I’d like to have you believe we are very cultured but truth be told I ran down to the basement to snag that picture off a shelf and wiped off the dust and cobwebs with the same dish towel I wiped up who knows what else with today.

Cookies and Shoelaces

July 20th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (9 Comments)

Before my run this morning I dug into my stash of strawberries and blueberries that I snagged from the Farmer’s Market on Saturday.

just_food

Food combining rules say fresh fruit is supposed to be “eaten alone or leave it alone”. I have found that *just fruit* is the perfect pre-run/workout fuel. This works perfectly before a run because obviously my stomach is empty from the night before and when eaten alone fruit leaves the stomach in 30 minutes. (45 minutes for a banana.) It gives me a nice little energy boost and by the time I’m dressed and ready to hit the pavement I don’t have to worry about running on a full belly.

I set out for 4 or 5 miles, I hadn’t exactly decided. About 10 minutes in my left foot started to hurt and my toes were going numb and I realized I hadn’t fixed up my laces on my new sneaks!

I have to loosen the laces up by the toes, almost to the point where you think they would be too loose. My toes need some wiggle room.

When I first started running I beat up my feet pretty badly until I got that figured it out. Blisters, numb toes, a black toe nail that eventually fell off. It wasn’t pretty. I finally went to get fit at a running shoe store and learned that running sneakers need to be a half size up and there are different ways to lace them for different reasons.

Because I loosen the laces at the toe I have to tie them in a way that makes them stay put and keep my foot from slipping around too much. Too much foot slippage means rubbing that leads to blisters.

I use that second hole at the top of the sneaker to make a loop, and then stick the other lace through the loop that I just made.

lace_loop

This makes it easier to tie the shoe tight at the top but without having to be tight around my entire foot.

tie_shoes

Running got a lot more comfortable for me when I got the shoe thing figured out.

I stopped to fix my laces and then was on my way again. I ended up doing my 5 mile loop and was back home in about 40 minutes.

Last night as I was getting ready to prep my breakfast cookie *dramatic twist* Zak said he wanted one on too. I had visions on my run this morning of taking pictures of our breakfast cookies together, walking hand in hand down the beach into the sunset.

But my vision was shattered when I got back from my to find this.

z_breakfast_cookie

At least he liked it. What a typical man! Here’s my girl breakfast cookie, all alone. (And where I throw food combining rules to the wind.)

monday_breakfast_cookie

But still fabulous, nonetheless.

Back the Truck Up

July 19th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Good Reads - (9 Comments)

A formal complaint was filed today about the lack of cooked food in this house. Zak asked if I would do some more cooking again “like I use to”. Oops. OK, ok. Noted. But this request gave me pause to reflect.

Do you know what my New Years Resolution was? Stop over committing myself. I have not done that all. Completely the opposite actually.

I recently heard someone say “If you have 40 priorities, then you have none.” That’s me. I have too many priorities. I take on too much and before I know it the things that are supposed to be at the top of the list get lost in the shuffle and I can’t give ANYTHING my best effort because I’m spreading myself too thin.

I need to loosen the reins on myself a little bit here, slow down and take a step back. I really like the benefits of eating more raw foods. I’ve really noticed a difference in my mood, cravings (or lack there of really) and energy levels since incorporating some of the concepts from the Raw Food Detox Diet into my life. I’m going to continue to make an effort to incorporate lots of foods in their natural state into my diet, but I’m not ready to commit to a high raw diet. I thought I was, but it’s a huge step and making a ton of changes all at once is just not sustainable.

I definitely like green juice and want to keep that juicer cranking. I think there’s a lot of benefits to juicing, provided you still eat plenty of other fruits and veggies and are getting enough fiber in your diet to be able to bypass the fiber you lose from juicing.

I like some of the food combining concepts. It’s a little confusing and overwhelming at first but you do get the hang of it. I do think it has some merit, but I’m not ready to go balls to wall with that either. I like the idea of eating fruit alone, but I still want to enjoy fruit on oatmeal in the morning.

Hummus. Not raw. Not properly combined. But that’s ok. Progress, not perfection. (And no I’m not the Alison that Gena refers to in this post!)

We took these Newman’s Own Organics Soy Crisps on a test drive.

soy_crisps

These were good, they reminded me of mini rice cakes. The only reason I would hesitate to buy these is because of my concerns over processed soy and how much is in our diet already. But taste wise these get a thumbs up.

with_hummus

Straight out of the food processor bowl YO!

These are absolutely my new favorite food. My grocery store didn’t have Newman’s Own Organics Dried Apples so I went with my fav Almond Butter maker, Woodstock Farms.

apple_rings

Ava loves them too. How have I gone this long and never experienced the awesomeness of dried apples?

For dinner I cut into my second kabocha squash to make fries.

kabocha_fries

I also made lentil sloppy joes. These taste like any sloppy joes I’ve ever had – it’s all about the seasoning, not the meat!

This recipe is pretty quick and easy.

Vegetarian Lentil Sloppy Joes

1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2 c rinsed lentils (I used red)
2 1/2 cups of water
1 1/2 c diced tomatoes
1 cup vegetable broth
1 small onion, diced

Saute peppers and onions in olive oil until soft. Add lentils, broth and tomatoes and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and add sloppy joe sauce.  Cook on medium low for about 30 – 40 minutes.  (red lentils cook quicker, brown lentils might need more time.)

Sloppy Joe Sauce

1/4 c ketchup
2 Tbsp soy sauce or Braggs Amino Acid
1/2 Tbsp yellow mustard
1 Tbsp chili powder
1 1/2 Tbsp pure maple syrup (or brown sugar)
1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar

Served here with half of a Ezekiel roll, kabocha fries and tossed salad.

sunday_dinner

It was such a perfect summer evening, Ava and I went for a little post-dinner ride around the block.

post_dinner_ride

A heavy post. Back to my regularly scheduled silliness tomorrow.
