Waiting For Pop Off

October 19th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Late Night Craziness - (10 Comments)

Going through the bin of winter stuff. This is what I call a rocking Monday night.

Rocking Monday Night

Oh big pink mittens how I’ve (not really) missed you. It won’t be much longer now until I’m wiping my runny winter running nose on you.

Big Pink Mittens

Geez I hope I washed those before I put them away for the season. They weren’t crunchy so I’ll take that as a good sign.

What else do we do around here for fun on Monday night? Why we wait for the corn to pop.

Waiting For Pop Off

And while we wait, we feed the children a little butter just to watch them come flying across the room and dive for the spoon. It’s like feeding the fish in the pond, they’re so cute you can’t help it.

Crazy For Butter Max Crazy For Butter Ava

OK, time to stop feeding the Koi, here we go!

Here It Comes

Whoops it’s getting a little hot in here…

Hot In Here

Air popped corn – Monday night socks have officially been rocked off. And replaced with pink stockings.

Popped Corn

We put the offer in on our probable new house tonight! I fully expect them to counter, at which point I will offer them a little pat of butter on a spoon and it will surely be an offer they’ll be unable to resist.

As Orange As My Co-Pilot

October 19th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast - (16 Comments)

Armed yesterday with a sack of snacks, we hit the road to walk through more open houses.

Sack of Snacks

Orange you glad I brought directions?

orange_you_glad

Would you believe that orange lead us straight to a house we loved and are ready to make an offer on? Well believe it! Our realtors are coming over this morning to put together the paper work and to take a look at our house to get it ready to put on the market.

I need to have people over first thing on a Monday morning more often – the house is spotless! I gave up my workout time this morning to pick up toys, books, put away laundry and even clean out the fridge.

Zak: Are they going to look in the fridge?

Me: Are you asking me NOT to clean the fridge?

**crickets chirping**

I didn’t think so. And yes, maybe they will look in the fridge. Maybe that will make or break the whole deal. What if I ask them if they’d like something to eat or drink and they tell me they are in the mood for kale chips? I’d have to open the fridge, right? We want it to look nice in there too. Forget baking cookies to make the house smell nice, let’s bake some kale!

Speaking of kale, isn’t it time for breakfast? I wanted something warm this morning but didn’t want to invest 15 minutes in oatmeal, so I made oat bran instead. Cooks in 1 minute? Where do I sign!

3/4 c unsweetened vanilla hemp milk, 1/2 c water, half a banana sliced, a dash of cinnamon – brought to a boil while stirring occasionally. Reduce to simmer, add 1/2 c of oat bran. 1 minute later? Time to eat.

Banana Oat Bran

Topped with the other half of the banana and some sliced almonds.

Oatbran Monday

Taking a little Breakfast Blog Break and then it’s time to whip out the vacuum and figure out what else I can neurotically clean between now and 10:30.

The Story of Saturday

October 17th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Party Time - (13 Comments)

Once upon a time, I discovered a new salad obsession. Easy peasy avocado salad dressing.

Chapter 1: Smash 1/2 an avocado with fork.

Chapter 2: Stir in Salsa.

Step 1: Smash Avocado Step 2: Stir in Salsa

Chapter 3: Stir in salad fixings of choice.

Chapter 4: Make room in your personal produce section and finish getting ready to run off and hit up yet another open house.

Make Room

Chapter 5: Enjoy salad in car on the way and wonder who turned out the lights?

Lights Out

Chapter 6: Take your hood off because it’s not raining in the car.

Chapter 7: Pile the whole family in the car for an open house adventure. Even Hissy can come.

Whole Fam

Hmmm… might this be our new neighborhood?

New Neighborhood?

Um, in a word – NO. I’m still recovering from uneven floors, that “what have they been cooking in here” smell most importantly, lack of a dishwasher. Given my dishwasher sometimes runs twice a day – just kill me now.

That’s right, RUN Max RUN!

Run Max Run

Part II:

After our first and LAST open house with the girls in tow (Hissy is still welcome), we headed off to a birthday party so big even Santa was there.

Even Santa

My girlfriend Sharon’s youngest daughter turned 1 yesterday, and her hubby turns the big 3-0 later this month. So they had a huge, outdoor bash on this unfortunately rainy and unseasonably cold day.

But 3 layers with gloves and a hat and some hot apple cider made everything alright.

Hot Cider

The wet bouncy house went over like a lead balloon.

Wet Bounce House

If we can’t jump, at least we can eat!

Party Food

Oooohhh not so fast – don’t try to sneak me any pepperoni! I’m on to the vegetarian saboteurs!

Mac with Meat

I had a vegetarian roommate in college and I asked her once what she would do if chopped up meat really small and secretly served it to her mixed in with something. She said she would never speak to me again. Interesting. At least I had a Plan B should she become the roommate who never shuts up.

Oh look – stuff I can eat!

Veggies

Bread

And stuff that is questionable. Are those bacon bits or sun-dried tomatoes? I guess we’ll never know.

Stuff I Can Eat

And more stuff I can’t. Who wants my bacon!?

Stuff I Can't

Like all stories – this on one had a happy ending with rain that subsided in time for a beautiful sunset.

Beautiful Sunset

And a post that ended with a beautiful cupcake tower.

Cup Cake Tower

The End.

A Fast Mile

October 17th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast - (17 Comments)

Well why don’t you just make yourself at home Hissy?

Making Herself At Home

Hissy has in fact made herself at home, I happened upon her last night in the bathroom hanging out on the sink.

Hissy Brush Teeth

A little snake charming last night, a little charming pre-run snack this morning.

Why Do Dates Always Look Creepy?

Why do dates look so creepy when you cut into them? And then to top it all off – it coughs up this gigantic bug-like pit! This is a cruel joke of nature if you ask me. Here! Eat this thing that looks disgusting but tastes unbelievable! Try it – it’s good, I promise! Just don’t look at it.

I had plans to run with my running bud Shawn today and it’s a good thing because I was not at ALL in the mood to run this morning. Glad to have someone I’ve made plans with on days like that.

He showed up around 9 and we warmed up by running the mile to the track. He’s been pestering me for a while to do a “fast mile” – basically run one mile as fast as we can. That’s what was on tap for today. After some stretching we each ran our own fast mile – meaning we each ran at our own pace 4 times around the outdoor track.

He ran his mile in 5:56, I ran mine in 6:52. I think that’s probably my PR for a mile, and is definitely not a pace I could have held on to much beyond a mile. It does make me want to believe a sub-20 5K might be a realistic goal with more speed work!

To summarize, that mile totally sucked, but I felt really good when it was over. I’m glad to have a benchmark though so I can see improvement (or lack there of) with more training.

We ran 3 more miles back to the house and ended with a grand total of about 5 miles in 40 minutes.

This mornings run was COLD – only hot oatmeal sounded good for breakfast this morning. Except it was 11 by the time I was finally getting around to making breakfast, so maybe this was lunch?

Banana bread oatmeal – KERF style!

1/2 c unsweetened vanilla hemp milk, 1/2 c water, half sliced bananas brought to boil.

Boiling Bananas

Once the water started to boil I added a half cup of rolled oats, a pinch of raisins and walnuts and a dash of cinnamon. Cook and stir regularly for 5 minutes, covered and let sit for 2 – 3 minutes before serving.

Topped with slices from the other half of the banana.

Banana Bread Oats

Hissy has been quite the hit around here – tune in to see a Hissy introduction!

And yes, that is Maxine saying “Oh my GOD” at the end over and over. I’m a fabulous role model.

This morning we had an appointment to visit a prospective house. I had time for 45 minutes of yoga, a fast breakfast and shower before zipping out the door to meet up with Zak and our realtor in the city. After our walk through that lasted nearly an hour, Zak and I walked the streets in the surrounding neighborhood to get a feel for the area.

Did you know that house hunting makes you hungry? True story.

Lunch Bagel and Pumpkin Soup

We hit up a bagel shop and split a hummus-veggie sandwich on an everything bagel, and we each got a cup of pumpkin (!!) soup. We discussed our thoughts on the house over lunch – a lot of character and nice features, but overpriced and needs some work. Sounds like we could have just as easily been discussing someone’s face and their consideration for a nose job.

I got home to discover a package waiting for me!

A Package! From Cindy!

All sorts of goodies from Cindy!

Knit Goodies

Hmmmm – dark chocolate and tahini? Someone knows me a little too well!

In Case of Emergency Only Got Hummus?

But wait! What’s this?

What's This?

Oh boy this is serious!

Whoa

A little belated birthday hissy for Maxine!

For Max

The whole kit and kaboodle – tea, peanut butter cups, post it notes OH MY!

LOOT

The girls have been with Aunt Ellen today so Maxine has yet to meet Hissy Le Maxine! They should be home shortly, so in the mean time I’m enjoying my new hand warmers with a cup of tea and a little computer bonding before the silence is broken. Thank you Cindy for the amazing care package you sent!

Hands Warm

Friday night is almost here. Might that be considered an emergency? I must go investigate a rather large bar of dark chocolate to help me cope with the approach of the weekend.

Merry Mid October

October 15th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Late Night Craziness - (17 Comments)

After a meeting this morning, more errands, taking Ava to her homeschool gym class, I decided we had not yet done enough running around so we hit up Wegmans for “just one thing”.

Usually I groan when I see Christmas stuff out at the stores before Halloween, but today I squealed!

Holiday Teas!

Celestial Seasonings Holiday Teas are back! They’re back everyone! They’re BACK!

I fell in love with these last year. More specifically, Candy Cane Lane and Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride.

Candy Cane Lane and Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride

I’m afraid to even look at the ingredient list lest it contain something I don’t want to consume. I have no idea how they can possibly combine tea leaves to make tea taste JUST LIKE A FRIGGIN’ SUGAR COOKIE without the use of something we should not be eating. It’s probably all fine and well because chances are I looked last year – but I don’t want to look yet, just in case. I just want to drink my cookie tea. Go away.

I mean seriously, it just doesn’t feel like mid-October without mechanical holiday characters and sparkly lead filled lights and fake trees dusted with some concoction of chemicals that looks like snow right in the middle of the grocery store.

Merry Mid October

Zak’s working late, I’m whooped after a long day so I did what any reasonable woman would do. I made myself a Christmas dinner.

Christmas Dinner

(Green and red. Get it?) That would be smashed avocado on Ezekiel toast with salsa. Zak can fend for himself with leftovers when he decides to grace us with his presence. (*Insert evil wife cackle here*)

The kids are in the tub laughing hysterically at something. I’m fairly confident the floor is holding an inch of splashed out water and Say Yes to Cucumber body wash/bubble bath. At least now I won’t have to mop in there for a while. Someone remind me to paint the living room ceiling before we put the house on the market.

Let the House Hunting Begin

October 15th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast - (18 Comments)

Instead of working out this morning, I worked on my to-do list. I think I’m addicted to giving myself too much to do. I can’t seem to stop signing on for things. I’m always volunteering to help, offering to do something for someone, raising my hand when no one else does. I think I always do this because my brain always comes back to – Sure, why not! I’m a stay at home mom. What else have I got to do? Well dummy, you’ve actually got a ton of stuff do.

OK let’s get to work. But hmmm I think I want some fresh juice to get the day started off right. That sure sounds delightful, doesn’t it? Fresh squeezed orange juice? Oh! Magnificent! I’m a stay at home mom! What else have I got to do with my time but make fresh squeezed orange juice for everyone?

OK shut up and get over yourself. Eat the damn orange like a normal person, save yourself from having to add “clean juicer” to your to-do list and get back to work.

Geez man what a slave driver.

Juicy Orange

On the do list this morning – get the mortgage ball rolling so we move forward with a very large item on the to do list: “Move into the city”. I had a phone appointment this morning a Mortgage Originator at 9:00. Of course at 8:45 I realized I was hungry. Do I have enough time to add “whip something up for breakfast before I have everyone’s favorite conversation with the bank” to the to-do list? Let’s do it.

Fast fruit cereal. Diced banana covered in cocoa powder and flax, topped with sliced almonds and chocolate unsweetened almond milk. Done.

Fast Fruit Cereal

Time check!

8:53

Quick! Add “Eat breakfast in 7 minutes” to the to-do list!

I scarfed ate at my desk and waited for the call from my new mortgage friend Jim.

Waiting for Phone to Ring

I’m not sure how Jim feels about his picture showing up on my blog considering we just met this morning, but you can probably pick out his bank mug shot on my monitor in the background. The photo release form is in the mail, and will likely pass our mortgage pre-approval letter like two ships passing in the night!

Thanks Jim! I think I love you. Quick! Add “Hunt for dream home” to the to do list! I’m a stay at home mom! What else have I got to do?

My body alarm was apparently set for 6:00 this morning, because that’s the exact minute my eyes popped open with no alarm to be heard.

I debated going to the gym first thing (Door #1) or waiting until the sun came up and going for a run outside (Door #2). After going to the gym on Monday and was reminded of how great it feels to get there early and get my work out in first thing, so I opted for what was behind Door #1.

I got dressed and was moments from heading out the door when Maxine woke up and wanted me to lay down with her while she fell back to sleep. My options are either (Door #1) leave and she’ll cry and Zak has to get up, then I’ve got deal with child and husband abandonment guilt – all for what? A stupid run? Or (Door #2) lay down with her for 15 – 20 minutes while she falls back to sleep and then sneak off while everyone sleeps to enjoy a good sweat session with peace of mind and free of guilt. At least free of abandonment guilt. I always manage to find something to feel guilty about, don’t worry.

I chose Door #2, fingers crossed she would in fact fall back to sleep. I laid down with her in full work out gear, sneakers and all. Toddler snoring eventually ensued and I was able to slither off the bed and creep out of the room around 6:45. It was still mostly dark but there was just enough light that I felt safe enough riding my bike the mile to the gym – so I did. The 30 minute delay ended up working out quite well! I love that a ride to the gym pads my workout with an extra 10 or 15 minutes of cardio without really feeling like it.

I hit the treadmill at the gym this morning and stuck with the treadmill for 30 minutes instead of a cardio round table. I alternated incline intervals with sprints, and wrapped it up with about 10 minutes of weights before I rode home.

This morning for breakfast I had a chocolate almond banana smoothie on the brain thanks to re-reading a few section in Thrive last night.

Oooo look! It’s a rare glimpse of the mystical banana dolphin splashing out of ground flax seed ocean!

Banana Dolphin

(Chocolate almond banana smoothies do strange things to me. Or at least I like to blame it on the smoothie that is no longer here to defend itself.)

Into the blender, with 2 servings in mind.

3 bananas
2 +/- cups unsweetened chocolate almond milk
1/2 c ground flax seed
1/2 c sliced almonds
2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

One for me, one for the man who I let sleep and didn’t abandon with an early-rising and therefore grumpy child.

Two Chocolate Almond Smoothies

With straws.

With Straws

Guilt free work out and chocolate for breakfast? That’s just the way I like it.

It was my turn to be one of the parent assistants in Ava’s homeschooling class this week. Each week there are two parent assistants who work in the classroom on a rotating basis along side the teacher and teacher assistant. That’s four adults for 16 children. Overkill? That’s what I thought until I was actually working in the classroom!

This homeschooling program that we’re a part of is founded on the principles of Waldorf education. For pre-schoolers and kindergartners learning in a Waldorf style environment, it’s all about PLAY. There is no curriculum for 5 and 6 year olds, Waldorf philosophy basically says the only thing kids this age need to worry about is playing! I have been working on reading and writing with Ava, but only because she’s eager and soaks it up like a sponge. If she resisted, I wouldn’t push the issue knowing that at this age it’s perfectly fine to let them learn about themselves and the world through play.

Parents in the classroom work on household-like tasks to provide an example of productive work for children to observe and participate if they like.

This week one family brought in pears from the pear tree in their yard and today we worked on cutting up pears for pear sauce.

Thirty Pears

There are child safe knives (that sounds like an oxymoron!) in the classroom and the children have mini cutting boards to help prep fruit if they are interested.

And oh boy were they interested. Does anyone have a battleship they need sinking?

Anybody Got a Battleship?

I cored, sliced up and passed out pears wedges to eager 5 and 6 year old as they chopped and diced and chopped and diced some more. I think I probably cored and sliced 30 pears for the handful of children interested in helping with this task today.

Ton O' Pears

The pears were cooked on high in the crock pot during class, but the pear sauce wasn’t ready in time to be enjoyed by the end of the 3 hour class. It doesn’t even matter though, it’s more about the experience at this age than the end product. I think the teacher finishes making it at home and brings it back next week to share. It’s almost magical to see how eager these kids are to help, learning is built right in. For us, this is what homeschooling is all about.

After a day away from home, I had nothing planned for dinner and was flying by the seat of my pants. This morning I cooked garbanzo beans that I’d soaked over night and had planned to make hummus with, but instead decided on a whim to turn them into dinner.

I started with a new bottle of olive oil from Newman’s Own Organics. I’d never seen Newman’s Own Organic EVOO before. After a unit price comparison of my usual Spectrum brand vs. Newman’s Own Organic, Nell Newman undercut Spectrum by a few organic pennies. Get in the cart Nell, you’re coming home with me!

Newman's Own Olive Oil

Into the pan with olive oil went chopped garlic, diced peppers and jarred jalapenos for sauteing. Next up, 2 – 3 cups (whatever 8 oz of dried garbanzo beans worked out to be) garbanzos with a cup of water, a couple tablespoons of cumin, a tsp or so of chili powder and a tsp or so of kosher salt.

Garbanzo Tacos

At the end I chopped up and added some fresh cilantro and called it chick pea tacos. Once upon a time I had no idea I could make my own taco seasoning. If you look at the ingredients on a packet of taco seasoning the main ingredients are most likely cumin, chili powder, paprika, garlic, cayenne pepper, oregano, salt. I have all these spices in my cupboard – minus the monosodium glutamate and other fun additives found in these pre-mixed seasoning packets. Don’t be afraid to do it yourself!

Served in a whole wheat tortilla with a little hand shredded colby jack cheese and salsa.

Tacos

Swaddled like a colicky baby.

All Wrapped Up

In the classroom I feel like this perfectly centered, loving, peaceful mother. What the hell happens at home when I’m in the middle of dinner, kids are crying and clawing at me, breaking up fights over who gets “the nice spoon”, who sits in what chair, I’m far from centered or peaceful. I’m in NO MOOD to let anyone even look in my general direction let alone help me prepare food. I need three more women here to help me wrangle kids, meals, laundry, dishes. Suddenly I’m beginning to understand that saying that it takes a village to raise a child.

Anyone? Nell? Want to fold that basket of laundry while I shovel these kids into bed?
