A Free Glass with Every Jar

Insomnia struck early this morning from about 2 until 4am. I slept in and got up when the girls did sometime before 8. I did yoga at home this morning with only a few interruptions for granola bars and one bonked head. A big shout out to Caillou today for baby sitting for about 40 minutes while mama got her downward dog on.

Caillou is not so great at preventing five year old’s from smashing their heads into things. Oh well, what can I say. He’s four – and he didn’t charge me.

Manly Time Change

I woke up this morning at 5:45 4:45. Early (yikes) but I loved that I was able to go for my run in the LIGHT at 6:30!

For fall/winter running, I’ll agree to run outside if 2 out of 3 criteria are met:

1.) Warm
2.) Dry
3.) Light

Scenario A: If it’s raining (lightly) but warm? OK.

Scenario B: If it’s light out and cold? Sure.

Scenario C: Dark and cold but dry? Not my favorite but I’ll do it.

Scenario D: If it’s dark and wet and cold? Deal breaker.

A Halloween Run

October 31st, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast - (13 Comments)

I had the most fabulous run this morning!

But this fabulous run actually started yesterday – with an innocent homeschooling Halloween party where Mama went as a Dirty Hippy and Maxine went as a ballerina.

The Dirty Hippy and the Prima Ballerina

I don’t know that this was much of a stretch from how we dress day to day, but whatever.

There were lots of fun treats and goodies.

Including some Mama Averie inspired raw donut holes, available in both chocolate and pumpkin.

Lots of fun games and activities too.

Dark, dark, DARK. The mornings are so dark! Come on daylight savings time – Mama’s ready to set the clocks back!

On my bike first thing this morning to ride – in the dark yet again – to the gym to pay my respects to the treadmill. I even dug out my reflective vest to wear on the way there today too.

Flash photography: Friend or Foe?

Foe. Definitely foe.

If I’m going to run on the treadmill and be a rat on the wheel for 30 minutes, I feel like I have no choice but to run sprint intervals to keep things interesting.

Birthday Beet Juice

Today’s work out was my favorite ride-the-bike-to-the-gym, 10 minutes on the elliptical, 10 minutes on the stair climber, 10 minutes on the indoor track doing speed work, ride the long way home and wonder how on earth a 45 minute work out went by so quickly.

In honor of Z-Man turning the big 3-2 today, I whipped us up a big glass of birthday beet juice. You know you want beet juice for your birthday breakfast – don’t try to deny it!

I don’t have any romaine and given I want to save my red leaf lettuce for something like oh… say… salad, I rocked out with these beautiful beet greens instead.

Our Sunday Best

Per usual, I was up before the rest of the crew this morning. I fired up the oven first thing and put together another batch of Toasted Apple Cinnamon Cereal a la Brendan Brazier and Thrive.

When I made this cereal earlier this week I was sort of surprised at how perfectly chewy the apples turned out. I sliced up a second apple and baked it right along with the cereal, both for an hour at 250.

I’m pretty sure I saw Mama Pea do this a while ago.

Over Run Oats

October 24th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast - (18 Comments)

Thanks to some warm air and the fact that it’s Saturday and no one is rushing off to work at 8 AM, I got to head out for my run well after the sun was up this morning. Some where around the 9 o’clock hour I hit the pavement and had a glorious 54 minutes and 6.25 miles to all myself. Well, good old Jillian was with me too, but she doesn’t count.

Before I left I put together some pumpkin overnight oats knowing they’d be ready to eat by the time I got back. Given I put them together this morning, I guess I should technically call these Over Run Pumpkin Pie Oats.

No Run, No Guilt

It’s been a little warmer these past few days, so I planned to run outside this morning. Unfortunately by the time it was light out and I had my act in gear, Zak had to put the kibosh on my run to leave something called work.

Fine, I guess you can go to work.

What to do – what to do? Leave sleeping children unattended or find something to do at home? OK, OK get out the yoga mat.

45 minutes of gentle hatha yoga and what was supposed to be 20 minutes of sun salutations turned 5 minutes due to a couple interruptions and then derailed altogether by a growling stomach.

Thanks to a surprisingly warm morning, I rode my bike to the gym today.

5 minutes ride there + 10 minute elliptical + 30 minute treadmill + 14 minute long-way ride home = an hour work out that only felt like 40 minutes. That’s just the way I like it.

Juice that is the same color as my counter top is the way I like it too. Aren’t hidden pictures fun?

Zak made juice while I was at the gym and was waiting for me to return. I haven’t made juice in a few days and I guess he had to take matters into his own hands. Oh good! Make me some too while you’re at it!

As Orange As My Co-Pilot

Armed yesterday with a sack of snacks, we hit the road to walk through more open houses.

Sack of Snacks

Orange you glad I brought directions?

Would you believe that orange lead us straight to a house we loved and are ready to make an offer on? Well believe it! Our realtors are coming over this morning to put together the paper work and to take a look at our house to get it ready to put on the market.
