Buckle Up For Safety

January 27th, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Parenting - (13 Comments)

Recently, the girls spent the day with my mom and my step father. My step dad happens to be named Dave, and Ava and Maxine affectionately call him “GrandDave”.

Ava loves all things volcanoes these days, and after watching a volcano movie at Granny and GrandDave’s house during their visit (yes, they still get to watch TV at other people’s houses!) a little discussion about volcano safety ensued between Ava and GrandDave:

Ava: When a volcano erupts, the lava goes real fast and you have to run real fast to get out of the way of the lava flow. Sometimes you can’t run fast enough and you die.

A Girl’s Best Friend

I’m officially stocked up on things to blog about!

First things first! On Sunday I took my camera along with me on an overcast and very-mild-for-January morning run.

I took a punk along with me too.

Shawn

Who wants to come along on a 5 mile run through my new neighborhood? Well, you don’t have a choice. Get your sneakers on. It’s time to go.

Our first landmark would be what is currently my most favorite thing to run over in the whole wide world. A pedestrian bridge that crosses the river that divides the city in half.

New House Firsts

So I’ve got a couple of note worthy new house “firsts” to mention today.

1. Run the recycling bin out the curb barefoot and in my too-thin-for-29-degrees pajamas at 7:35 AM

Oh sure, I’ve done this plenty of times before at the old house, but yesterday was the first time I did this at our new house.

It’s a classic tale really, it goes a little something like this:

Life Goes On

If I could sum up in one word what I’ve learned over the course of the last couple of weeks here, that word would be:

Balance.

Signs of Life

After a much needed break from the land of blogging, I’m feeling ready to peek my head out and tread carefully into the sea I got swept up and carried off in almost a year ago.

I can make no promises as to the frequency of posts at this time. I haven’t even turned my camera on in well over a week. But I believe that I’m back and if you’re still peeking in even after I locked the blog down, know that there is more Mama’s Weeds craziness in store for all of us in the days and weeks to come.

It’s Not Goodbye

A very wise woman once said, blogging is fun, but life is real.

Indeed Mama Pea. Indeed.

Blogging, at least to the extent that I have taken it with two posts a day most days, as well as all the other duties that come along with being active in the blogging community, is time consuming to say the least. As life changes and evolves, the needs of my family as well as my own needs change and evolve too. Time is a pretty hot commodity around here, and while I’ve enjoyed finding the time to blog regularly this spring, summer and fall – our new house and the start of a new year have made it abundantly clear that there is suddenly less time to go around.

Let There Be Light

So for the most part, I have been thoroughly enjoying my 6 AM runs with my new running group. It feels great to get my run in so early and have exercise checked off my list first thing. I enjoy the company and conversation as well as the easy pace of the group.

I do have to be honest about one thing though, and that is that these runs in the dark are starting to wear on me a little. I miss the sun! I miraculously managed to get a run in by myself during the daylight hours on Wednesday. Even though it was an overcast day, it was still nice to be out when the sun was on our side of the earth for a little while. Stingy southern hemisphere.

Not So Fast

Tonight I had my hopes set on a fast and easy dinner. I was ready to slice up a Kabocha squash that I found recently (at a store, not in my closet or something) but after it’s photo shoot on the cutting board, I flipped it over to find mold growing on the bottom and a bunch of soft spots on it too.

Kabocha

Well alrighty then. I had a few choice words for this Kabocha squash, chucked it into the compost and moved onto the next orange fleshed vegetable on my shelves.

Well Fine Then

Well, I have no pictures of our woodland adventures today because we were not there long enough to take any pictures. Within about 10 minutes I had two very cold, cranky girls on my hands that not even a backpack full of refined carbohydrates (pretzels, granola bars, kashi crackers) could turn around. It WAS cold though, the thermostat in the car read 18 on the way home. Oh well. We tried.

Interestingly enough though, Ava said she “couldn’t wait” to go cross country skiing when we got home. Zak brought his childhood cross country skis to the house yesterday and Ava’s been in love with the idea of cross country skiing ever since.

Business as Usual

The holidays are over. We have moved into our new house and are mostly settled. A formal complaint was filed yesterday over the lack of home cooked meals and several informal complaints have also been filed over the lack of regular posts in recent weeks as well. It would appear that I am officially out of excuses for not cooking or blogging per usual. Your break is over lady, time to get back to work.
