Avert Your Eyes

Children with Granny, the man off with some friends, I had the joy of making lunch in total peace and quiet this afternoon.

And I had a hankering for a veggie burger.

Veggie Burger Mash

1 can of black beans, rinsed, drained and mashed
1/4 c ground flax seed
3 Tbsp bone suckin’ bbq sauce

When I was getting out veggies for burger toppings, I spotted some mushrooms hiding in the back of the fridge. Into the burger mix they went.

Oh Looky Looky! Mushrooms!

Shhhhh, listen? Do you hear that? Just a quiet burger sizzle and a gentle bubble of my veggies steaming.

High Hopes

I had high hopes today.

High hopes that the Garmin 405 would be available to borrow at my local running store from their electronic lending library.

Beat Up 405

Score! After reading Shari’s post yesterday on gadgets I had Garmin envy and hit up the cheapest way I know to get my hands on a Garmin (FREE), even if it’s only mine for a week.

I had high hopes for a dinner out at a restaurant near Zak’s office before a homeschooling gathering tonight. He eats lunch here frequently and has only had good things to say about their salads.

We Came, We Saw, We Raked

Before I realized that I never published my morning post, we were off like a herd of turtles to help my grandmother rake the sea of leaves in her yard.

Lots to Rake

And rake we did. Lots and lots of raking. Did I mention we raked today?

Not At School

And some jumping too.

Now you see her.

Now You See Her

Now you don’t.

Now You Don't

After a couple hours of yardio, we broke for lunch. Homemade bread and homemade squash soup. If that doesn’t just shriek AUTUMN in your ear like a banshee on a hayride I don’t know what does.

Recalibration

I’ve had one thing on the agenda for today: Recalibration.

After a week of brownie sundae’s, Halloween party goodies and Kit Kats, I channeled Brendan and Natalia today to help me fend off the sugar cravings that have started to try and sneak up to hit me on the head with a lead pipe, in the kitchen, by Colonel Mustard.

Oh no you don’t sugar. Nice try. I’ve got the dream team on my side!

Before and After

We hit up the apple orchard again today after my friend Sharon saw my post from last week. I figured I’d better go before I had a chance to finish our 11 lb bag.

Back to the Apple Orchard

Before we left, her girls drank green lemonade and after they were done I was totally jealous that my kids will not.

After juice but before we left I tried one of these Heart Thrive bars I picked up the other day.

Before I finished it I knew I was going to need something to drink after I was done. This sucker was dry!

The Story of Saturday

Once upon a time, I discovered a new salad obsession. Easy peasy avocado salad dressing.

Chapter 1: Smash 1/2 an avocado with fork.

Chapter 2: Stir in Salsa.

Step 1: Smash Avocado Step 2: Stir in Salsa

Chapter 3: Stir in salad fixings of choice.

Chapter 4: Make room in your personal produce section and finish getting ready to run off and hit up yet another open house.

Chapter 5: Enjoy salad in car on the way and wonder who turned out the lights?

Lights Out

Chapter 6: Take your hood off because it’s not raining in the car.

A Juice 22

October 5th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Dinner Time - (12 Comments)

After a weekend of eating out and juice bar hopping I’ve come realize I’m missing a lot of juice creativity and possibility when I stick with the same old, same old green lemonade day after day. Today I swapped out romaine for carrot – WOO living on the wild side!

Well, if carrots are what I’ve got – love the one you’re with, right?

Big Beets

A very pretty spinach salad with apples, raw cashews and craisins tossed in miso dressing and rice vinegar.

Pretty Spinach Salad

Different than my standard giant salad but I still feel like I’m spinning my wheels in a food rut.

Who’s the Boss?

I’ve let Max have a lot more control over all sorts of things this weekend. I’ve found that with half as many kids as usual I have twice as much patience. Funny how that works.

She made her own peanut butter and jelly sandwich today for lunch. That probably goes without saying, at least I hope it does.

Max Makes PB&J

Remember being a kid and wondering how mom always made sandwiches so perfectly?

Fortunately for me I made my own sandwich.

And BEETS! Dude, beets are good. I don’t know why anyone didn’t clue me in on this sooner.

Dessert For Dinner

Maxine and I have had a sweet little day together. We shopped, she tapped, I smiled, she talked, I listened. I’ve come to realize just how much Ava rules the roost here and poor little Maxagirl often doesn’t get to speak in complete sentences before she’s interrupted by her very intense older sister. It’s easy to see how birth order can play a role in your personality!

We ate lunch before we left to grocery shop to avoid any hungry impulse buys.

Saturday Lunch

This picture makes my lunch look so lovely. I think it’s the book in the background.

Hummus Sandwich and Gazpacho

A spread of sun dried tomato hummus on gently toasted Ezekiel bread, plump sliced tomatoes, home grown sprouts with a blanket of red leaf lettuce and a dabble of mustard. Chilled gazpacho made with the finest seasonal vegetables hand selected from a local grower.
