Chocolate Smoothies Built for Two

October 14th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast

My body alarm was apparently set for 6:00 this morning, because that’s the exact minute my eyes popped open with no alarm to be heard.

I debated going to the gym first thing (Door #1) or waiting until the sun came up and going for a run outside (Door #2). After going to the gym on Monday and was reminded of how great it feels to get there early and get my work out in first thing, so I opted for what was behind Door #1.

I got dressed and was moments from heading out the door when Maxine woke up and wanted me to lay down with her while she fell back to sleep. My options are either (Door #1) leave and she’ll cry and Zak has to get up, then I’ve got deal with child and husband abandonment guilt – all for what? A stupid run? Or (Door #2) lay down with her for 15 – 20 minutes while she falls back to sleep and then sneak off while everyone sleeps to enjoy a good sweat session with peace of mind and free of guilt. At least free of abandonment guilt. I always manage to find something to feel guilty about, don’t worry.

I chose Door #2, fingers crossed she would in fact fall back to sleep. I laid down with her in full work out gear, sneakers and all. Toddler snoring eventually ensued and I was able to slither off the bed and creep out of the room around 6:45. It was still mostly dark but there was just enough light that I felt safe enough riding my bike the mile to the gym – so I did. The 30 minute delay ended up working out quite well! I love that a ride to the gym pads my workout with an extra 10 or 15 minutes of cardio without really feeling like it.

I hit the treadmill at the gym this morning and stuck with the treadmill for 30 minutes instead of a cardio round table. I alternated incline intervals with sprints, and wrapped it up with about 10 minutes of weights before I rode home.

This morning for breakfast I had a chocolate almond banana smoothie on the brain thanks to re-reading a few section in Thrive last night.

Oooo look! It’s a rare glimpse of the mystical banana dolphin splashing out of ground flax seed ocean!

Banana Dolphin

(Chocolate almond banana smoothies do strange things to me. Or at least I like to blame it on the smoothie that is no longer here to defend itself.)

Into the blender, with 2 servings in mind.

3 bananas
2 +/- cups unsweetened chocolate almond milk
1/2 c ground flax seed
1/2 c sliced almonds
2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

One for me, one for the man who I let sleep and didn’t abandon with an early-rising and therefore grumpy child.

Two Chocolate Almond Smoothies

With straws.

With Straws

Guilt free work out and chocolate for breakfast? That’s just the way I like it.

I like the look of that smoothie. I also like the jar glasses, I think I’ll do that when my almond butter runs out and I’ve used to for jar oats. I Don’t know how you do it though, drink a cold smoothie on a cold day. I swear, I am always freezing and just could not handle it. I’m sitting at my cube right now with my jacket on drinking tea. My toes are cold. Feel bad for me. :*(

Mmmmm..chocolate smoothies! I have to say, though, that the banana didn’t look like a dolphin to me when I first looked at it. (haha) My mind must be in the gutter.

I don’t drink shakes as much as I’d like but when I do they ALWAYS have either peanut butter or AB in them. I’m glad to hear they are Thrive Approved!! I REALLY need to read that book. I keep seeing it everywhere!!

That is definitely one of my favorite smoothies! I make it with frozen banana instead though…how is the texture with fresh banana?

I must say that even more than the Mystical Dolphin, I adore those matching jars who’ve evolved into drinking glasses. You make even a recycled jar look FABULOUS! They remind me of the mason jars my grandmother used to have that made ordinary iced tea taste like heaven!

I got tired of glasses breaking all the time and these jars are so sturdy! It works perfectly, and I have a few lids and they come in handy for storage devices sometimes too!

Ummm can I just say – new breakfast alert!! For some reason I feel like I need to incorporate more smoothies into my breakfast. I’m always reticent to do it because I can’t clean up the blender right away because I’m on the go in the mornings and then it occurred to me – make it at night!! Hello!?

So thank you, my friend, for allowing your post to inspire what seems to be a super easy solution to my smoothie problem. All in a Mama’s day of work I suppose!

  • Ugh I hate the guilt of leaving the child to work out. When I went back to the gym after I had Snuffy, I only did 30 minutes each visit because I felt bad for spending more time away from her
