Decisions, Decisions

On any given day, at any given moment, the answer to my own question “Are you going to run the marathon again this year or what?!” could go like this:

1. Or what.
2. Yes, of course I am.
3. Maybe.
4. I’ll do the half.

I’ve got a million different reasons for wanting to run it. I’ve got the same number of reasons why I think I shouldn’t.

I cycle around though all four answers at varying speeds, coming back to #1 when I think of the time commitment involved in training. Time is a hot commodity these days.

I’m tired of going around and around, so today I put my pen on the paper and let it guide me to the correct box like a Ouija race entry form. It’s no coincidence that the deadline for entering is August 1.

I let the pen decide. It’s over. I’m done with my inner debate. I love being part of the race day excitement and love having something to train for. The half seems like the perfect compromise and a half-assed solution to this annoying turmoil at the same time. I’ve never run a half marathon before so this will be something new to add to my race report.

I like to run far. Just not too far. At least not this summer.

Entry form filled out and in the mailbox, I ate some shriveled apple goodness for my pre-ride fuel.

Notice Ava’s sweet little bowl of overnight oats there?

I enjoyed my 12 mile ride and was home in about 50 minutes. I walked through the door to find Zak eating my breakfast cookie! I should have carved a big “A” into it last night.

No big deal. Instead I got to work on the overnight concoction I’d prepared for him – which by the way, also happened to be an experiment. Yes, I test on animals. Don’t call PETA.

I took a cue from Christina at Mindful Living and threw a small handful of raisins into his bowl last night along with vanilla soy milk, a little agave, ground flax and cinnamon.

No yogurt. The man does not like yogurt.

The result? Pretty dang good, a nice change up. Soaked raisins have fun texture. “Fun” like a rollercoaster ride and no bra? Not quite, but both worth doing at least once.

Topped this morning with 1/2 a sliced banana and raw almond butter. And I didn’t even miss the yogurt.

Now if only the dang mailman would hurry up and get here so I can stop twitching.

Great decision, the half is really fun and I would hate to miss out on the race excitement as well. Now you get to do fun speed work, sometimes I miss it when I am putting in the longer miles.

  • The half sounds likea good choice for where your life is now…

  • I’m glad you made your decision… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Fantastic post!!! I can’t stop laughing!

I think you made the right decision with the half marathon. Is that on the same day?

Hey Alison! Happy day to you ๐Ÿ˜‰

Aww, that little bugger ate your breakfast cookie? (I’ve been meaning to try one of those and keep forgetting…grrr) How dare he?? LOL!! Next time tell him you added yogurt to it…hahaha!

Well, what you ended up with looked pretty darn good anyhow..yum! I love raisins. I bought the jumbo raisins the last time and wow, those puppies are great!

I am not a runner. I admire people who are. I mean, I’ll run on the treadmill for interval training, but that’s about it. Maybe someday I’ll try my hand at it. Reading about all your runs, and how effortless it seems for you….is really exciting. Glad you made a decision that is right for you. I’ll look forward to hearing all about your training ๐Ÿ˜€

Good! You’ve decided and now you can get THAT off your to do list! haha

half marathon seems so daunting to me! I just jogged 3 miles, and even though I am so so proud of ME for keeping this up for a few months now… 13 miles is a LONG stinkin’ run GIRL!

    GOOD FOR YOU!

I am looking forward to seeing how you get ready etc!

You did exactly what I was going to say. Do half! I think that is a pretty good compromise. Man I haven’t made overnight oats in ages. Are you doing the combining thing? Hope you like regular almond butter. I looked for raw but the closest place to get raw is Trader Joes and its 25 miles away :(

Congrats on making your decision to do the 1/2 marathon…it’s a great distance. I have only ran one half marathon, but I loved it! You also don’t have to compromise a lot of your time as you would for the full.

haha…I can’t believe he ate your breakfast cookie! that’s hilarious. I tried overnight oats this morning for the first time and used your suggestion (Dates). I loved it & can’t wait to try it again! Next up, I’ll be trying the breakfast cookie! You haven’t let me down yet! haha

  • tiponz says:

wohoo i am happy you took my suggestion with the raisins! oddly enough I took your suggestion with the dates and LOVEDDDD ITTTTTT….thanks!

  • Congrats on the marathon! You’re awesome and you will do great.

Soaked raisins are so good! They plump up nicely, and I feel like they lose some of the sweetness (which makes my teeth hurt – weird) so I like them. I think I’ll try overnight oats without yogurt and see how it goes.
