French Toast Torture

November 25th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast

Given it’s Thanksgiving week, almost all of our normal homeschool-away-from-home activities have been canceled for the holiday. I wanted something warm for breakfast this morning but the idea of hot oatmeal just wasn’t doing it for me. Since we didn’t have to be anywhere this morning, I decided to spend some time on a more time-intensive breakfast.

Who wants French Toast for breakfast today?

Wednesday Breakfast

*crickets chirping*

Why am I the only one raising my hand? French Toast is good YO! Well you and I know that, but my pint sized gang has never been interested in French Toast. Insanity you say? That’s what I say!

When it comes to trying new foods – my kids can be pretty reluctant. I’m done trying to force them eat their vegetables. I do encourage them to take small no-thank-you helpings, but it helped me relax to learn that kids sometimes have to try something 20 times before the readily eat it. I just plod along and do my thing, leading by example and hope that one day they’ll be begging me to make them beet burgers.

For French Toast this morning I scrambled one egg with a 1/2 cup of unsweetened almond milk and a dash of cinnamon. I’ve only been eating Ezekiel bread these days and have hesitated to use it for French Toast fearing it would be too stiff to use for French Toast. Thank goodness Shari showed me the light and I was more than ready to give it a go this morning!

Mama's Favorite

I soaked two slices of Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel in my egg mixture for about 4 – 5 minutes, until each slice was good and drenched.

Soaking Bread

Into a pre-heated pan coated lightly with coconut oil for grilling, to be cooked on each side for about 5 minutes or so.

Grilling

It was at this point that Ava commented that something smelled really good. Damn straight it smells good! *ahem* I mean, yes – honey! French toast is definitely good!

I still had half of the egg and milk mix left, so I offered to make her some. I explained to her that it was sweet and you pour maple syrup on top like you do with pancakes. She cautiously consented with my signed affidavit that if she didn’t like it, she could have something else. It’s a deal.

The kids don’t like Ezekiel (yet!) so for Ava’s I version used regular wheat bread that I use to make their sandwiches.

Ava's Favorite

I got Ava’s bread soaking and in the mean time I got back to working on my masterpiece. One slice of Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel French Toast, topped with a layer of sliced bananas.

Layered Banana

The second piece of toast, more bananas and then the finishing touch – 2 Tbsp of real maple syrup.

With Real Maple Syrup

I didn’t use to be a real maple syrup kind of gal – it was too expensive and seemed unnecessary. We didn’t use it that often so what’s the big deal?

Pure Maple Syrup

But then I came to realize – real maple syrup is expensive for a reason! You’re supposed to be frugal with it! It’s not only expensive in terms of cost, but also in terms of calories. A quarter of a cup contains 210 calories! That’s way more than any of us need and if it’s cheap you’re much more likely to recklessly drench your pancakes with it. Sure, the fake stuff didn’t cost a lot of money, but what about what it’s doing to your waistline? I’m grateful that it’s more expensive because I’m careful to use only a little bit and a small bottle lasts us a very long time. I figure if they’re going to eat sugar, let’s eat the real stuff and leave the high fructose corn fun on the shelf.

With an 1/8 of cup of syrup, the total calories for this breakfast was about 380 calories.

Good Bite

Now for the kid test. She was a little reluctant.

A Little Reluctant

A little nervous.

A Little Nervous

But after watching Mama scarf hers down and listening to me say This is so good with my mouth full about 12 times – she tried it.

A Big Thumbs Up

I give this breakfast a big thumbs up too.

Thumbs Up From Me Too

Where was Maxine? Slept straight through breakfast. Don’t ask me how she managed to stay sleeping with a house full of amazing french toast smells. Hers is in the fridge ready and waiting for her try and most likely stick her nose up at. In that case it will be ready and waiting for the human compost to come home from work tonight and take care of it.

My kids don’t like French toast either, which is fine since we don’t do the egg thing anymore. I want to try a tofu version on them. I’m impressed that Ava cleans her plate. Even if my girls love what they are eating, I think there is an unwritten that I have to throw away at least a few bites. Tsk tsk, wasteful little things.

Oooooh I love me some french toast!! I was just trying to decide what I wanted for breakfast and think you may have convinced me. I use Ezekiel bread too, so I think I’ve got everything I need!

Ava is so adorable and YAY for eating all her french toast!! What a good girl! I think Makenna has a stomach the size of a thimble because that girl just doesn’t eat!

I’m off to see what this ‘stumbleupon’ thing is all about~!

one more thing to ditch !

gah, french toast using cinnamon raisin bread is SO GOOD. i haven’t tried FT with ezekiel either for the reason you mentioned above, but i think soaking it longer would help. yay for ava’s thumbs up…i think we have a winner here folks…

That looks so good. French toast was always my favorite. I love how soggy they get with the eggs and the cinnamon flavor is to die. I really want french toast now!!

  • Tay says:

I love French toast made with cinnamon raisin Ezekiel – by far the best combo!

  • I never ever have french toast, but yours may convince me to try it. Can I have Maxine’s?

  • Shari B. says:

Oh wow, cinnamon raisin Ezekial. I will have to use that one next! I just use plain ol’ Ezek. So it saturated good and well in under 5 minutes? Good to know! I soaked mine in the fridge for an hour, just to be sure. You know how that Ezekial is! It’s crazy dense!

    So glad Ava liked it!

Have a beautiful Thanksgiving EVE!! :)

  • Erin says:

Looveeee me some french toast! That looks so good. And yay for Ava trying it! You tell her I said woot woot girl!!

I love your uses of Yo, as well.

  • Glad that you’re able to not go thru much real maple. I, on the other hand, do. TONS. I go thru a $17.99 jug from TJ’s weekly. Anyone hear of raw (or unbaked) baked goods? Snowballs, cookie dough, etc….I use either agave or maple, never on bread, but in recipes. It’s not cheap to cook with good ingredients, whether they are the condiment or as part of the mix/dough. But it’s worth it :)

    Happy TG Alison!!!!

Your french toast looks so good and I’m feeling inspired to make my own now! Maybe that would be a good Saturday morning breakfast, I think! 😀

And I totally agree on the maple syrup bit. So expensive… calorie and money wise.

  • I don’t really like French toast, but I think if I were in your kitchen and you served it to me on a pretty plate, I would gladly eat it! :)

And as far as your girls’ willingness to try new foods goes, they’ll be just fine! They see you eat such a great variety of healthy foods, and they’ll come around eventually, little by little. And you are so right, it takes up to 20 times trying a new food until a kid may like it. I have a friend whose son is a very picky eater, and I always remind her of that article. (She loves to say, “Oh, he doesn’t like this…). Anyway, I think it’s great that you encourage the girls to eat new things but don’t push them too hard. They’ll ask for beet burgers soon enough! 😉

    Happy Thanksgiving!
