Run Run Run Til The Running Store Takes My Garmin Away

November 12th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast

A frosty start this morning.

Frosty Start

It could been the middle of a blizzard for all I cared, I was getting out there today come hell or high water to play with my new toy!

New Toy

With a GPS strapped to my wrist I didn’t give two hoots about my route and just ran. I typically stick to a handful of routes that I know the mileage of so I know how far I went.

Free at last! Thank Garmin 405 almighty I’m free at last!

OK I know that’s totally pathetic, why do I need a gadget to let me be free to run a random route? I don’t, I’m just a nerd like that.

Out and back, my little watchy watch told me I ran 4.49 miles in 36:55, average pace 8:13. Love. IT.

I made myself some a glass of green lemonade to sip on while getting the Garmin software installed and set up on my computer.

Setup

ANT Stick! This little sucker allows the watch to wirelessly transmit my workout data to my computer as soon as I get near my computer with the watch on.

November 12 Run Stats

I love the heart rate monitor and that I could see both my average and maximum heart rate during each mile and the number of calories I burned! I normally don’t care about calories burned but now that I’m calorie counting mode I am interested to know the numbers. I entered my stats in the unit this morning before I left so it should be fairly accurate.

Compared to the Garmin 305, the 405 is smaller, but it’s still bigger and clunkier than my usual watch. I’m not complaining, I’m just noting.

Watch Size

Totally fun! I’m ready to go out again! Right now! Pesky kids.

I am loving the Garmin data!

Not that I am going to be running out in the big bad world anytime soon…but a calorie feature and a heart rate feature…even on a hike or stroller thing or bike ride!

As soon as I get a mountain bike (soon) hubs and I are going to hit the road. (baby thing attached)

    THANKS for the “review” ha
and tonight is “cardio” night. I am so hoping my rest day helps that.
    well see.

Oh what fun it is to laugh and sing tonight!!!
The freedom is one of my favorite things about running with a Garmin, I’m such a numbers freak, gotta know my mileage, gotta know my pace… so being able to just go and run without having to Map My Run first is heaven!

I waited till the 405 came out to buy my 305 because it was about 2/3 the price from when I first started coveting it. It’s big but it still does the same thing and I love it!!

    Have a great day!!
    xoxo

I want one so bad, looks amazing to know all you running info.
Love the frosty yard, I’ll run in snow, blizzards and 0 degree weather, yeah I’m crazy!

  • Shari B. says:

Oh you really are teasing me now. Not only telling me about the smaller size, the wireless connection… but SHOWING me.

Killing me. You know that right? πŸ˜‰

I’m just playing, Alison! You know I love ya! And love that you get to use the Garmin like a library book! That still boggles my mind and is the coolest idea!

And by the way, you would so kick my butt in a foot race. 8:13??? for 4 and a half miles? If we ever run together it has to be here where I live at 6000 feet above sea level so that I at least have the fighting chance of keeping up!

    NICE JOB!!!

  • Julie says:

I can’t get over how GD fast you are. You fly!

  • Holly says:

i would die for a garmin. perhaps it would help get my butt out the door and running again. not as fast as you. but running nonetheless :)

  • Robin says:

Yay for the new Garmin! I saw it charging in your post the other day and was wondering if I missed you getting it. You will love it….just remember to lock the bezel if you are sweating a lot or it is raining, otherwise the thing will go a little crazy. Don’t say I didn’t warn you! πŸ˜‰

  • Fallon says:

Wow the Garmin is nice!! Hmmm maybe I’ll ask for a X-MAS present, teehee!

  • Lizzy says:

i wish i had a Garmin too! i am just like you, i have routes that i typically do so i know how many miles i’m running, but with a garmin we can be free! i need the freedom! AHHH!!! hehehehehe

glad you had such a fun time with it! :)

  • Libby says:

As you know I’m not a runner but imagine at garmin would be a fab tool if you were.

I think I’m a little out of the loop with the GPS devices. With the one I have (from 5 years ago), I have to wear this little belt clip device about half the size of a deck of cards. I guess now they fit it all in the watch? So yeah, the watch a little clunky, but by comparison that’s much better than wearing the bouncing belt clip.

  • Erica says:

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I am so so jealous :) Glad you’re enjoying your rent- a -fitness toy! I really want one. I love the idea of just running without a path- I also stick to only my known mileage routes. Have a good afternoon

  • That is so funny you should say “free at last.” That’s exactly what any runner I talk to says about having a GPS gadget. Since I can’t afford a GPS watch right now, I allow myself some freedom by running for time vs. distance. Its amazing how free it feels when we’re not married to the idea of running a specific route. Isn’t freedom one of the reasons we run and yet we chain ourselves to our nice little measured out routes? Okay, so now I’m going overboard. This is your blog, not mine. πŸ˜‰

  • Erika says:

How fun! I wonder if I had something like this it would motivate me to become a runner! :) I love gadgets!

  • Tay says:

I love my Mr. G and couldn’t imagine life without it :-) Glad you’re enjoying your rental!!

  • Glad you are having fun with your toy! πŸ˜‰

  • So jealous of the garmin. πŸ˜€ I think the “freedom” it offers would make me incredibly happy…haha. πŸ˜€

I’ve yet to see a frost here yet, but I’m sure it will be here before I know it. I’m so not ready! But it’s always exciting to welcome a new time of the year too. πŸ˜€

  • Ashley says:

I’m the same way — I stick to routes where I know the mileage, or the track. I want a Garmin, too!

P.S. It’s getting so cold here, too. Not sure where you are but I know when I headed out this morning I was not at all properly dressed for the weather. :(

  • Jess says:

Oh, man, I want a Garmin so badly. I’m dying to do more trail running and mapping one’s distance on mapmyrun with barely visible trails is not, in a word, fun.

I also love that it gives the heart rate zones. I didn’t know about that feature. Oh, Santa, why don’t you come early?
