New House Firsts

January 23rd, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Morning Craziness - (12 Comments)

So I’ve got a couple of note worthy new house “firsts” to mention today.

1. Run the recycling bin out the curb barefoot and in my too-thin-for-29-degrees pajamas at 7:35 AM

Oh sure, I’ve done this plenty of times before at the old house, but yesterday was the first time I did this at our new house.

It’s a classic tale really, it goes a little something like this:

Here and Now

Up dark and early this morning for some one on one time with my yoga mat and my pal Dawnelle from Yogadownload.com.

Yesterday morning after my run I found myself thinking “I need to do yoga” and this morning as I was rolling out my mat I thought “I should be running”. This is one of those moments where I reminded myself to live in the moment and be truly present and focused on what I’m doing now, instead of what else I could be doing. How very yogi of me.

Insomnia struck early this morning from about 2 until 4am. I slept in and got up when the girls did sometime before 8. I did yoga at home this morning with only a few interruptions for granola bars and one bonked head. A big shout out to Caillou today for baby sitting for about 40 minutes while mama got her downward dog on.

Caillou is not so great at preventing five year old’s from smashing their heads into things. Oh well, what can I say. He’s four – and he didn’t charge me.

No Run, No Guilt

October 22nd, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast - (12 Comments)

It’s been a little warmer these past few days, so I planned to run outside this morning. Unfortunately by the time it was light out and I had my act in gear, Zak had to put the kibosh on my run to leave something called work.

Fine, I guess you can go to work.

What to do – what to do? Leave sleeping children unattended or find something to do at home? OK, OK get out the yoga mat.

45 minutes of gentle hatha yoga and what was supposed to be 20 minutes of sun salutations turned 5 minutes due to a couple interruptions and then derailed altogether by a growling stomach.

Stay at Home Yoga

Yoga was on the agenda for this morning, but what was NOT on the agenda was Thing 2 waking up early with me.

Under normal, children-still-sleeping circumstances, I would listen my yogadownload podcast from the computer speakers, but that wasn’t going to work today. Instead of making yogadownload and Blue’s Clue’s battle it out, I’d fired up the iPod and used my arm band for yoga like I do for running!

You really can take yoga anywhere

I totally should have taken a picture of me patting myself on the back.

With Steve and Blue babysitting Maxine, I got my downward dog on.

Fun from the Shower

This morning I fired up a yogadownload podcast and did 45 minutes of Yoga for Runners. Holy boats and standing splits this is a challenging class! But it’s all good. I will be visiting this class again for sure.

I know I’ve had too much to eat the night before when I’m barely noticing hunger after 9 o’clock the following morning. Or maybe those corn cakes just have some incredible staying power!

I cut up a pear to nosh on before hopping in the shower – I’ve got a lunch date today!

Why I’m trying to get this young coconut open, you see.

sweet young coconut

This is my second young coconut. Getting these things open is no small task. Considering the ones in my bra aren’t so young anymore I was inspired to try, try again. And a special thanks to Linda for additional inspiration and her fabulous idea to use a mallet instead of trying to cut this thing open with an axe and keeping my hand behind my back to ensure “I don’t lose it”, as Natalia Rose would say.

Intuitive Fruit Dehydrating Yoga

I found the instructions for my food dehydrator online and got to work this morning.

As instructed, I soaked sliced bananas in lemon juice for a few minutes before placing them on the tray.

Two trays of these guys.

Sliced up and cored a red delicious apple, soaked in lemon juice and onto the tray they went.

And a kiwi tray. Peeled, but not soaked.

All that fruit slicing – call me crazy – I went ahead ate a hydrated kiwi with reckless abandon. I’m a wild woman.

Your Personal Homeschooling Lesson

I got up this morning to do a little downward dog in the family room, only to discover a little outward skunk wandering around on the deck.

Holy Skunk

Take note that this picture was taken BEHIND the safety of a glass door.

I flew up the stairs to snag Ava out of bed. Wake my sleeping 5 year old on purpose? Am I insane? I knew she’d love it though and I didn’t want her to miss it. She’d have been up shortly anyway. At least that’s what I’m telling myself.
