Four New Things To Try Sometime Soon

February 9th, 2012 | Posted by Alison Spath in Lunch - (5 Comments)

It’s been a busy week playing catch up after being out of town for a few days, so I’m here today to share a couple of random things worth trying if you’re looking for something new to do with yourself, your mouth or even your hair.

First!

Try Brushing Your Teeth in the Dark.

Thanks to a couple of flashing firefly toothbrushes, one of our new favorite new activities is scrubbing the pearly whites with the lights off.

Bathroom Dance Party

It’s a dance party in your bathroom! You’re totally invited to join us and pump up the volume while you pump out some toothpaste.

Kale Chips

Today at CSA pick up we were told, “We have TONS of Kale – don’t be shy!”

CSA Kale

Well you’re in luck!  I am not shy.

So ummm, yeah.  After I saw just how much kale I actually brought home, I then saw two options –

Option A: move through a serious amount of kale in short order or

Option B: figure out how I was going to get the fridge door shut.

I went with Option A and officially added kale to tonight’s dinner menu.  One of the things that’s so awesome about kale is the same thing that’s awesome about spinach –  it reduces down to practically nothing upon cooking.

Leftover Lentil Burger Leftovers

A great way beat the leftover blues is to create something new and different with your uneaten foodstuffs from a previous meal.

Thanks to a big scoop of rolled oats, lentil tacos from Sunday were turned into lentil burgers last night.

Lentil Tacos Turned Lentil Burgers

With oats stirred in to the last of the lentil taco filling and then given a few minutes to sit, they’ll very generously soak up the sauce and thicken up. It’s then easy to form the mixture into patties with your hands.

Cooked in a lightly oiled pan for about 15 – 18 minutes, flipped a couple of times.

This is purslane.

Purslane
Most people would call purslane a weed.  Fewer people know that you can eat it. The internet tells me that purslane is really good for you, so it must be true.

I was 14 when I was hired by my grandfather as a professional weed puller and lawn mower.  “Professional”, because I was paid $2.50 an hour for my mad weed pullin’ skillz.

(I just realized those two items are in my current job description, except now I make $0.00 an hour.  Does that mean I’m back to amateur status?)

Trail Running Truths

November 6th, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Fitness - (4 Comments)

Welp, a trail race was on the agenda for this morning! 10 kilometers to be exact.

Yes sir – 10 cold, rainy, snowy and more rainy kilometers. On the agenda.

Also on the agenda? A bunch of lessons to be learned. Get ready to take some notes.

Stay in the car as long as you can.

Rainy Race Day

Let’s not rush to get out there just to stand around in the snow and rain, mmmk?

Wet Shawn

Snow is better than rain.

Wet Snow

Because you don’t get soaked quite as quickly. Whose idea was this race anyway?
