What? You don’t eat peas and watermelon for breakfast? Well then you haven’t lived!

Actually, it’s time to tell you that this popsicle mold has paid for itself.

This is especially true because our neighbor gave it to us and I didn’t pay a dime for it.

And this is especially good because the handles break off pretty easily.

Cut Up a Cantaloupe

While slicing up that there cantaloupe I got to thinking about Natalia Rose’s line from the The Raw Food Detox Diet about fruit:

Eat it alone or leave it alone.

Food combining rules say you should eat only eat fruit on empty stomach because when mixed with other foods, it can lead to fermentation, stomach pains and gas.  As I understand it, it has to do with the enzymes that are released to digest fruit vs. what’s released to digest other foods.

Whenever I get carrots like this:

I feel really cool.

Like – That’s right! My carrots are so crunchy granola they still have their crazy green tentacles attached, yo!

These greens are like mace for hippies. They protect me as I walk back to my car from CSA pick up. They totally say “Don’t mess with my home girl or I’ll latch on to your face and suck the soul straight from your celery stalkin’ body.”

Wow.  But hey, you can’t say I didn’t warn you. My carrots love me. That’s the real reason I support local farms you know.

Zucchini Lasagna

Two Zucchinis Walk Into a Bar

Yeah, me too.

Did you know you can use zucchini in place of pasta in lasagna?

It’s true.  I proved it tonight.

To start, you’ll need two large zucchinis – slice length wise into 1/4 inch strips. (Think thin!) Place into a colander and salt each slice to start removing some of their water.

Preheat oven to 350 and set your zucchini aside for about 20 minutes to sweat it out over the sink.

Meanwhile, get to work on your sauce and cheese layers.

Berry Christmas In July

We were out of town for the long holiday weekend, but I was excited to get back knowing the black raspberries in the backyard had probably started to ripen while we were away.

We didn’t get home until nearly dark last night, so I accepted the fact I was going to have wait until sunrise to see what berry surprise awaited me for breakfast this morning.

That is of course, until I remembered the reason they invented flashlights:

Ratatouille, Ratatouille

Whenever I say “Ratatouille”, I always want to say it twice and then the chorus Rock Me Amadeus starts to play in my head.

What? Is that just me?  Probably.

So… Ratatouille. Yeah. I’m fairly sure “Ratatouille” is French for “what the hell am I going to do with all these summer vegetables?”

My mom has been making Ratatouille and raving to me about it during recent phone conversations.  When she described what went into it, I realized that I had every single one of the ingredients in my overstocked-with-produce fridge.  That’s what I call vegetable fate.

Caterpillar Kick Counts

I planned a long ride for this morning knowing I didn’t have to rush back with Zakman on vacation.

I prepped a pound of strawberries and chowed about half a pound before my ride.

Headed out on my bike on this perfect summer morning for 15.4 miles in 1 hour and 1 minute.

Upon my return I promptly polished off the other half pound of strawberries and the last of my pineapple too.

Yes, I practice dish conservation.

I checked in on our little buddy this morning too.

Muggy but at least cool, I headed out this morning to run a comfortable 6.24 miles in 50 minutes. My legs felt pretty tired toward the end but nothing a little green juice couldn’t fix.

The star of today’s green sludge:

A beat up pear.

Today’s concoction consisted a HUGE head of romain, cucumber, pear, lemon and ginger. Go ahead and call me a lettuce vampire, I love drinking the blood of plants!
