Last Minute Marathon Lessons

October 3rd, 2011 | Posted by Alison Spath in Fitness - (4 Comments)

So it’s the first week in October, and that means this is marathon week over here.

October Calendar

I’ve had a couple of training trial and errors through the month of September, and there’s a couple things I’ve learned over these past 4 weeks.  This little ditty is for you long distance runners out there who might find yourself signing up for a marathon at the last minute because you were thinking “hey, that sounds like fun!!”

Yes Mom

Ava and Zak have been off on a Daddy/Daughter Adventure this weekend, giving me and the little one an opportunity for a Mom and Max Staycation of our own.

Together Maxine and I made a plan to do all the fun things she likes to do. How often do you have to say “no” to your kids and their stream of demands from that well that never seems to run dry?  It was nice to be able to say “yes” a bit more than usual for a couple days here.

First Tuesday

There is a 6:30 AM Active Yoga class on Tuesday mornings that I occasionally get to, and today was one of those Tuesdays.  As it turns out, on the first Tuesday of every month this Active Yoga class becomes a Restorative Yoga class.

“Restorative” apparently meant just five poses.  That’s it.  Five.  In 45 minutes.  But it was certainly restorative with some gentle hip opening, some gentle shoulder opening, some gentle mouth opening with a schlurp of drool as I nearly fell back to sleep during savasana it was so nice and easy.

Energy Lessons

Potential Energy

Chocolate Chews

These my friends, are fuel. And a pretty yummy fuel at that.

Inspired by Brendan Brazier’s Direct Fuel Bites, I made my own version with coconut oil, medjool dates and cocoa powder. Coconut oil is where it’s at for potential energy, which is what makes these little suckers so powerful.

Chewy Chocolaty Chewy Chews (catchy, eh?)

10 medjool dates, pitted
1/4 cup coconut oil
2 – 3 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

Throw all ingredients into the food processor and then stand back to observe it’s Kinetic Energy with awe and wonder.

Let There Be Light

So for the most part, I have been thoroughly enjoying my 6 AM runs with my new running group. It feels great to get my run in so early and have exercise checked off my list first thing. I enjoy the company and conversation as well as the easy pace of the group.

I do have to be honest about one thing though, and that is that these runs in the dark are starting to wear on me a little. I miss the sun! I miraculously managed to get a run in by myself during the daylight hours on Wednesday. Even though it was an overcast day, it was still nice to be out when the sun was on our side of the earth for a little while. Stingy southern hemisphere.

Not Thanksgiving

It’s not Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean I can’t give some thought to all the things I’m thankful for these days.

I’m thankful for kids that are too big to fit down the laundry chute.

I’m grateful that the little one who I worry COULD possibly fit down there played at the downstairs laundry chute location that is three feet off the floor.

I’d like to give thanks for salad and what a portable meal it can be. Thank you Gladware for making lunch possible at my new home away from home, while taking a little unpacking break before heading home to get ready for an evening out.

No Camera, No Problem

The fact that I have no pictures from today is a true testament to just how crazy things are right now as we prepare to uproot our lives and move into a new house.

Following my gym workout early this morning I took a phone call from a distraught breastfeeding mother only to have the call go much longer than I anticipated and be forced to end the call leaving barely enough time to throw together a packed lunch and rush out the door to meet up with our realtor for the final walk through of the new house before closing tomorrow morning to leave for our next destination in another rush to get to Ava’s homeschooling class before returning home to an answering machine full of messages to listen to while getting dinner prepped and then realizing I left my camera in my purse and I left my purse in Ava’s classroom in the basement of a church 30 minutes away.

Breakfast Garlic Breath

Big juice, little juice. Carrot juice, garlic juice. Which juice is which juice?

Big Juice, Little Juice

Yes, that’s right. That little glass. That very little glass. That very little glass that is only half full is the one with garlic in it.

Zak – AKA Garlic Romancer, asked me the other day about putting garlic in juice. I told him I’d never seen it in any juice recipes but he was free to browse The Juicing Bible I borrowed from the library and admittedly, have barely cracked up open.

Three Signs

November 15th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast - (15 Comments)

BLAH, I’ve got a food hangover this morning. There are three tell-tale signs that I over did it last night.

1. I woke up feeling less than stellar
2. I was not at all interested in breakfast when I woke up
3. I did not care to know what the scale had to say this morning
