Breakfast is not complete without almond butter! A couple of tablespoons of pure maple syrup for dippin’ and sliced bananas piled high!

I’d say this breakfast is easily 600 calories but well worth every damn one of them! Especially with a long run planned for late morning. I also find that if I eat more calories earlier in the day, I’m less hungry later in the day and find it easier to not eat before bed.

I’ll surely attract some weirdos for anyone Googling “Food Porn” but whatever.

After breakfast we got ourselves out the door and took Ava to her final dance class before her recital next week. My mom met us and took both girls home with her while I went back home to run far, far away.

But I could only find one sneaker??

After a bit of hunting I discovered the ponies had a made plans to run as well.

I did 9 miles today, the furthest I’ve run since the marathon last fall. Technically this is “Week 4” of marathon training if I follow the same 18 week training program I used last year, but I’m still undecided if I’ll be doing the marathon or not again this year. At this point I’m going to do what I did last year…. loosely follow the training program, doing the weekly long runs and slowly upping my mileage, and see how I feel as the deadline for registration draws closer.

It was really warm and sunny today. Running at noon with the hot sun beating down, I was quickly reminded of why I prefer to run first thing in the morning right after the sun comes up.

9.12 miles in 1:12, making my average pace 7:55. It sure felt like I was running a lot slower than that with the heat though!

After a shower and a quick lunch, I picked up the girls at my mom’s. A fun morning and afternoon at Granny’s house, next up: Zak’s mom’s house to spend time with Hanna, Aunt Pat and the CHICKENS.

A little cook out of dogs (both hot and veggie) and salad for dinner, Maxine was totally bummed to have ice cream for dessert.

Once we done making a mess of our faces, I had to force them to go visit the chickens.

And just in case we weren’t yet dirty enough, it was now time to water the plants in Hanna’s garden.

Break Fast

June 5th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Weight Loss - (9 Comments)

I think I’ve uncovered the Fountain of Youth, and it doesn’t come in a bottle and isn’t going to cost us three easy payments of $19.99.

Fountain of Youth

Nope, it’s called Human Growth Hormone and you can get it for free everday. (Call now!)

OK awesome. So how do I get my hands on this stuff?

No Eating Before Bed

Yes, we’ve heard this before.  But it feels different this time because my new source of inspiration Jillian Michaels actually explained this concept in greater detail, why it’s important and how it makes a difference in her latest book, Master Your Metabolism.  And now I’m all over this idea like lice in a room full of pre-schoolers.

If I can sum up what I’ve learned from Jillian and now other sources as well: HGH is this amazing hormone that keeps us looking young, burns fat and calories, gives us energy, keeps us healthy, heals our bodies, pays down our credit card balances and even puts the toilet seat down. I told you it was amazing.

As I understand it, we produce about 90% of our HGH when we sleep. More specifically, there’s a huge surge of it about an hour and a half after we fall asleep. The opposite hormone of HGH is insulin. When insulin levels are up, HGH will not be released. So when we eat right before bed, carbs especially, our body releases insulin to deal with the breakdown of carbs into sugar, thus our insulin levels are elevated and therefore our HGH levels stay down.  Well great.  Way to lose our biggest opportunity to get a nice generous shot of HGH, not mention falling into the toilet when you get up in the middle of the night to pee too.

Jillian says in her book that HGH can even help us burn fat IN OUR SLEEP. Uh, hello, HGH – I’m Alison. Pleased to meet you, I think we’re going to be great friends.

When I read about the wonder of HGH in Master Your Metabolism, I did a bit of digging around to see what else I could find because as much as I love her, I’m not putting all my eggs into Jillian’s basket.  As it turns out though, lot of research and studies concur with what Jillian says – so now it was time to put this into practice.

Break the Habit

I use to always have a before bed snack, usually something high in carbs like a bowl (or two, or three) of cereal, thinking I was doing a good thing by carbo loading for my morning work out. Head –> Palm

I was one of those “I’m ALWAYS hungry at night!” kind of girls, so some experimenting was necessary to make sure this “no eating before bed” thing could be sustainable.

I started by eating a bigger dinner.  This definitely helped me from feeling too hungry before I hit the hay and also ensured it’d been 2 to 3 hours since my last meal as prescribed by Jillian.

What about the days we eat dinner early or I’m TRULY hungry before bed?  Well, I’ve taken Jillian’s advice here and steer clear of anything high in carbs.  Instead I aim for something with a higher percentage of protein and some fat… like greek yogurt, berries and some nuts instead of my old favorites like cereal, popcorn or something sugary.

The Results Are In

It’s working! Not only have I lost the few pounds I gained over the winter without effort, I am sleeping better than I have since 2004 B.C. (Before Child.)

These days I’m in bed by 10:30 and the next thing I know the sun is up, my eyes are open and I think the clock is pulling a practical joke on me saying it’s 5:30. Sure clock, you’re telling me I beat the alarm? Nice try.

I’ve known for a while now that regular exercise improves my quality of sleep – but putting the kibosh on stopped before bed snacking has taken my sleep quality to the next level.

It’s always easier for me to stick a new habit when I understand the reason it’s good to practice that behavior.  If someone says “stop eating before bed!” and doesn’t explain why, it doesn’t last.  Understanding the biology behind fasting after dinner makes it worth the effort to get into the fasting groove and makes it that much easier to not snack before bed.

I have definitely struggled with this in the past, especially this winter and gained back 5 lbs of my initial weight loss, even after the holidays. I was always overdoing it with cereal, chocolate, craving massive quantities of carbs before bed. This and other changes I’ve made have made an incredible difference in my life and helped me feel like I have more control.

On a typical day, I’m done eating after dinner – that’s it. I fast until morning cause hey, don’t call it breakFAST for nothing.

That Kind of Morning

June 4th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Morning Craziness - (2 Comments)

Waking up hungry, I ransacked the fridge for a bowl of pre-run watermelon.

A bit of foreshadowing for more PINK yet to come this morning perhaps?

watermelon

Watermelon partially digested, I laced up my sneakers and hit the pavement for 32 minutes to run 4.18 miles with Jillian.

Upon my return as I approached the house, I could hear Maxine crying from the street (windows open). I ran up the stairs and snagged her from the bedroom. We came downstairs to do some yoga to stretch and cool down.

Before long though yoga was cut short with “Play with me mommy! You be this!” thrusting multiple ponies into my downward dog.

Alright, you asked for it.

Play was innocent enough, until Minty and Springtime pony stopped by trying to sell their new hair products door to door.

The other ponies ran from the windows and kept quiet until the door to door ponies gave up and moved to the pony hovel next door.

Meanwhile there was a bit of panic when 1980’s Baby Pony some how climbed to the top of the turret.

But the crab was immediately rejected and thrown across the room voted off.

Feeling like my new and interesting ideas weren’t being fully appreciated, I got up to make myself a bowl of cereal.

mess_of_cereal

I made a big cereal mess with 2% fage mixed with a little bit of Stonyfield LF vanilla, topped with flax, Heart to Heart, PB Granola, bananas, strawberries and hemp milk.

And yes I recycled my watermelon bowl from this morning for my cereal. I’m a firm believer in dish conservation. I’m so green.

After the cereal photo shoot, I came back into the kitchen to find the ponies had gathered round for some Heart to Heart too.

Lentil Chili

June 1st, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Dinner Time - (6 Comments)

For lunch today I threw together some refried beans quesadillas.  Spicy refried beans smeared into a flat out wrap, sliced tomatoes, corn and a little bit of white cheddar cheese. I also made some kale chips to use up the last of my bag of kale and for a little green on the side.

Served 2% Fage, salsa and avocado slices.

refried_bean_quesadillas

And for dinner tonight, Lentil Chili was on the menu.

1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 medium onion, diced
1/2 medium pepper, diced
2 cloves of garlic
1 1/2 c water
1 1/2 c vegetable broth
1/2 lb dry lentils, rinsed and drained
8 oz crushed tomatoes
1 Tbsp chili powder
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp oregano
ground red pepper if you like it spicy!
dash of salt if desired

A large sauce pan, saute onion, pepper and garlic in EVOO until soft.  Add water and broth and bring to a boil.  Add lentils.  Stir and cover.  Cook for 30 minutes on medium to low heat, stirring occasionally.

peppers_onions with_lentils

Add tomatoes and spices and cook an additional 30 minutes on low, or until lentils are soft.  Add a bit more water or broth if needed. Stir occasionally.

more lentil chili

Could be good with avocado, greek yogurt, salsa… but since I had all those things with lunch I just ate it like this.

I often eat by myself, either before or after the girls (depending on their hunger levels) so that I can eat in peace without having to get up to refill drinks, get another fork/spoon, more ketchup. Zak works for a small software company and usually works well past the dinner hour, which means I’m typically on my own for dinner as well. Lentil chili waiting in the fridge for him when he gets home!

For dessert? This guy.

smile

But don’t be fooled. As soon as I took that pic I did this.

don't be fooled

And then I ate him.

June One

June 1st, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast - (5 Comments)

For the first day of June, it is a little chilly! 47 degrees at 6:30 called for a long sleeved shirt and capri tights for my 5.88 mile morning run. When I got home the girls were still asleep, which allowed Zak and I to have some uninterrupted conversation before he was on his way to work.

For you runners out there, do you have a wide variety of routes you take? There are many different combinations I could take through the neighborhood streets, but I have a few routes I always stick to, depending on how far I want to go and how much time I have in the morning. I have a variety of 4, 5 and 6 mile routes, plus a 7 and an 8. The same streets and turns save me from having to enter a new route into mapmyrun to figure out my mileage and my pace when I get home.  I guess this is one of the advantages to the Garmin!

Garmin 405

I’ve got my eye on the 405. Who’s got a Garmin and which one do you have? I borrowed the 405 for a week in the fall from one of the local running stores and it was awesome. I’m in the process of “saving up”, selling used books and DVD’s on Amazon with the thought that I’m swapping out things I don’t need anymore for something new that I want. It’s much easier to justify the price that way.

After Zak was off to work I was ready to eat. This morning it was back to oatmeal and last night I decided I wanted overnight oats today.

Chocolate overnight oats. Last night I put together a half cup of oats, a heaping teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/4 c of plain LF yogurt and 1/2 c unsweetened chocolate almond milk. Although I was not thinking clearly because the plain yogurt and unsweetened almond milk left much to be desired in the sweetness department this morning. Bananas, granola and almond butter to the rescue, but next time I won’t forgot to use vanilla yogurt.

Chocolate Overnight Oats

Off to feed the girls breakfast and shower. We’ve got some errands to run this morning and I’m glad for my power breakfast to help see me through! Working only in the yard yesterday left me with plenty of housework to get caught up on today too. Hopefully we can squeeze in some fun along the way. 😉

If you’re looking to catch fruit flies and don’t want to practice nabbing them with chopsticks, you can use this easy combo of ingredients to rid yourself of a fruit fly invasion.

All you need is a little dish, some apple cider vinegar and dish soap to make your own fruit fly trap.

ff_1

Pour apple cider into dish and stir in a squirt or two of dish soap. Set dish in an out of the way place somewhere near the fruit flies.

ff_3

Walk away whistling and pretend that you aren’t watching.  A couple of hours or overnight, those suckers can’t resist.

ff_5

Isn’t there a saying “you catch more fruit flies with apple cider vinegar than chopsticks”?  Well there should be.

How to do Friday

May 29th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Dinner Time - (7 Comments)

1. Once the girls are on their way with Aunt Ellen, go for a 4.18 mile run in 32:13, so your pace average pace is 7:42

2. Come home and do some body weight exercises

3. Chain self to desk for remainder of afternoon

4. Go ahead and break for lunch around 1:00

5. Make a gigantic salad with red leaf, spinach, carrots, cukes, red pepper and tofu chunks.

Lunch

6. When it starts getting close to dinner time, unchain self from desk and get started with dinner.

7. Make Black Bean and Salsa Soup

Ingredients:

4 cups cooked black beans (or 2 15 oz cans, rinsed and drained), divided
2 cups of vegetable broth
1 16 oz jar of salsa
8 oz of canned or frozen corn
1 Tbsp of ground cumin (more or less to taste)
1 Tbsp cilantro (more or less to taste)

Black Bean and Salsa Soup

8. In a food processor or blender, add 1/2 of the beans, 1/2 of the salsa and vegetable broth. Puree until smooth

Black Bean and Salsa Soup

9. Combined pureed beans, whole beans, the rest of the salsa and corn with spices into a pot and cook on medium high heat

Black Bean and Salsa Soup

10. Totally easy and totally awesome. Pat self on back.

11. And while you’ve got the food processor out, you might as well make some hummus too.

12. Oh yeah, the cumin is still out too, so go ahead and make Cumin Hummus. That’s a good idea

13. Into the food processor bowl, put:

1 can of Eden Organic garbonzo beans, partly drained
Heaping Tbsp tahini
2 cloves of garlic
2 – 3 Tbsp canola oil
2 – 3 Tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp ground cumin
dash of salt

14. Go back and stir the soup

15. Stop the food processor and sample with Kashi Honey Sesame crackers.

cumin_hummus

16. Pat self on back again

17. Stop eating hummus and stir soup again

18. Put hummus away before you eat it all and leave none for The Man

19. Once soup is heated through, eat just a small cup of it because you ate a bunch of hummus already

Black Bean and Salsa Soup

And that’s Friday.

Vegetable Frittatas

May 28th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Dinner Time - (6 Comments)

As an oat lover, I usually end up making eggs for meals other than breakfast. Today I made Veggie Frittatas for dinner.

Ingredients:
1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
5 or 6 eggs
1/4 c of milk (optional)
1/4 c of cheese (optional)
Vegetables of your choosing
Salt and pepper to taste

In a large pan, saute vegetables on medium heat in EVOO until soft. I used what I had on hand; onions, garlic, mushrooms, red pepper and spinach.

Because the spinach cooks fast, I got the other veggies started and held off on the spinach until everything else had softened up.

veggie_fritta

While the vegetables are cooking, get those eggs crackin’.

eggs

I only had 5 eggs so I added a splash of milk (about a 1/4 c?) to the eggs for a little more body. Add S&P if you like and scramble together. Once my peppers, mushrooms and onions were beginning to soften up, I added the spinach.

I put the cover on the pan to let the spinach get wilty. The spinach reduces quite a bit so a handful of fresh spinach is not as much as it seems.

add_spinach wilty_spinach

When the spinach is ready, make sure vegetables are spread evenly across the pan. Lower the heat just a tad and slowly pour in your scrambled egg mixture.

If necessary, pick up the pan and gently swirl the egg mixture around so that it’s evenly spread through the vegetables. Top with a bit of shredded cheese if you like.

add_eggs_cheese

Cover and cook on low heat for about 10 – 12 minutes, checking periodically. You’ll know it’s done when the top of the frittata is firm and set.

cooked

There are of course many different variations to this. You could add meat, a wide variety of vegetables, cheese or no cheese, egg whites in place of whole eggs, the combinations are virtually endless. Mine turned out a little thin, so that probably made for a shorter cooking time. I would have used at least a half dozen eggs if I’d have had that many.

I use a rubber spatula to cut the frittata into pie shaped pieces and serve.

528_lunch

I ate my slice with a giant salad on the side! Ava and Max ate cheese quesadillas with 2% Fage for dipping. Plain greek yogurt is an amazing, much healthier alternative to sour cream. I swapped it out months ago and they had no idea, not even Ms. Max Picky herself.

After dinner the little gals wanted to go out and play in the rain… your wish is my command. Out we went.

rain_dance

Well aren’t we dainty?

max_azaleas

Totally defeating the purpose of an umbrella but whatever.

brilliant

Eventually the umbrellas were totally abandoned and we called it a night.

no_umbrellas

Actually we called it: Bath Night
