Buckle Up For Safety

January 27th, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Parenting - (13 Comments)

Recently, the girls spent the day with my mom and my step father. My step dad happens to be named Dave, and Ava and Maxine affectionately call him “GrandDave”.

Ava loves all things volcanoes these days, and after watching a volcano movie at Granny and GrandDave’s house during their visit (yes, they still get to watch TV at other people’s houses!) a little discussion about volcano safety ensued between Ava and GrandDave:

Ava: When a volcano erupts, the lava goes real fast and you have to run real fast to get out of the way of the lava flow. Sometimes you can’t run fast enough and you die.

GrandDave: I would help you get away. If a volcano ever erupts, you call me up and I’ll jump in my truck and come get you and drive you away from the volcano real fast.

Ava: Umm GrandDave… You don’t have my car seat in your truck.

I guess you can never be too safe, right?

A Girl’s Best Friend

January 26th, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Good Reads - (25 Comments)

I’m officially stocked up on things to blog about!

First things first! On Sunday I took my camera along with me on an overcast and very-mild-for-January morning run.

I took a punk along with me too.

Shawn

Who wants to come along on a 5 mile run through my new neighborhood? Well, you don’t have a choice. Get your sneakers on. It’s time to go.

Our first landmark would be what is currently my most favorite thing to run over in the whole wide world. A pedestrian bridge that crosses the river that divides the city in half.

Punk

Why I take so much pleasure from running over a pedestrian bridge I’ll never know – but I love it, I do!

(Pictures are more fun with people in them so expect to see my running friend Shawn a lot during this post.)

I should let you in on a secret goal I have in life: to be able to do a cartwheel even when I’m 100 years old.

30 years and going strong! 70 years to go.

After the river path, it’s time to break into the cemetery though a broken spot in the wrought iron fence.

Dude, you ran right by it!

You Missed It!

There We Go

The only problem with taking my camera with me on this run was that Shawn would run up ahead while I stopped for my mid-run photo shoots, and then I would have to bust ass to catch up with him. Ah well, probably a good thing really, especially given I haven’t done speed work in ages.

Why does this come as no surprise that this very cryptic message was spray painted on by men? I certainly can’t imagine a group of women spray painting “BALLS” under a bridge. “KITTENS”? Probably not. “DIAMONDS”? Maybe. “CHOCOLATE”? Getting closer now.

There! 5 miles! Done! That wasn’t so bad now was it? We were only gone about 45 minutes, and it seemed to go by like the scroll of a mouse wheel, didn’t it?

Next on today’s bloggy agenda would the awesome care package that arrived via United States Postal Service from my boyfriend Brendan Brazier yesterday!

OK, maybe not from BB himself, but a girl can still dream.

Thrive Fitness

I need to give a big shout out and thank you to my girl Kelly at Sequel Naturals for offering to hook me up with Brendan’s latest book, Thrive Fitness. I’m so excited to read and review this book!

In case you missed it, I happened to love Brendan’s book Thrive. The changes I made in my diet thanks to everything I learned in his first book have made such a difference in my life. Thrive gave me the information I needed to make adjustments in my approach to eating which in turn has given me more energy in general, has allowed me to sleep better, and made my runs and workouts feel positively amazing – I can’t wait to see what Brendan’s training program and book dedicated to fitness has to offer!

This happens to the perfect segue into Blog Worthy Item #3:

I realized this weekend that the half marathon I plan to run in April is now less than 12 weeks away! Considering the training program I used last time is 12 weeks long, I guess that means it’s time to start thinking about training? Ugh. I’m not ready yet. The Sunday long runs don’t start getting longer for another 5 weeks, but still. If I hope to beat my previous half marathon time of 1:47, I’ve got to get back to doing long runs and speed work too. Speed work is so much easier in the summer! Or at the very least, on a treadmill.

Well, it’s not anywhere near summer and I don’t have a treadmill or even a gym membership, so I’m going to have to figure something out. I’m probably going to have suck it up and run fast outside. In the cold. Joy to the world.

Runners! Do you do speed work outside in the winter? (And if you live in a warm climate, your comment doesn’t count!) Does it suck as much as I imagine it’s going to? Maybe I’ll be surprised and sucking in cold, frozen air fast and hard will be petting a kitten? Putting on a diamond necklace? Eating chocolate? No?

New House Firsts

January 23rd, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Morning Craziness - (12 Comments)

So I’ve got a couple of note worthy new house “firsts” to mention today.

1. Run the recycling bin out the curb barefoot and in my too-thin-for-29-degrees pajamas at 7:35 AM

Oh sure, I’ve done this plenty of times before at the old house, but yesterday was the first time I did this at our new house.

It’s a classic tale really, it goes a little something like this:

I don’t put the trash and recycling out the night before garbage pick up because I swear to myself I’ll remember to do it first thing in the morning.  The new day dawns and of course taking the trash out is the last thing on my mind.  Cue early morning garbage truck noises from the street, enter Alison running outside with no shoes and lugging an overflowing recycle bin down the driveway, leaving behind a wake of flattened almond milk cartons and construction paper scraps in preparation to flag down garbage men.

And the plot twist?  It wasn’t the garbage truck that I heard.  It was a school bus.  It gets even better when I remembered that Monday was a holiday and the trash schedule is therefore a day behind this week.  After nearly breaking my neck in a race to get everything thing out to the curb first thing Friday morning, they didn’t even come until Saturday.

2.  Yoga in my pajamas

Again, nothing new under the sun.  But today is the first time I’ve done yoga at the new house which is a cold, hard reminder that it’s been well over a month since I’ve gotten my downward dog on.  45 minutes of gentle hatha yoga in a peacefully quiet house while my children slept and I’m starting my day feeling all groovy and centered.

3.  Stove Top Oats

I’m not even sure the last time I had regular oatmeal cooked on the stove instead of overnight oat form (geez, if only I had a blog where I documented what I ate for breakfast every day for the last 8 months…) but I decided today was the day to bust out the rolled oats and cook’em up on the stove, old-fashioned oat style.

Stove Top Oats

About a 1/3 cup water, 1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1/2 sliced banana brought to a boil.  Add 1/3+ cup rolled oats, cooked on medium for about 5 minutes, remove from heat and cover for another 2 – 3  minutes.

Saturday Morning Oats

Topped with the other half of the banana, a tablespoon of almond butter and ground flax seed.

Oats Close Up

And of course with some firsts, I should throw in a few yet-to-happen in the new house items that seem worth mentioning too.  So what haven’t I done in the new house yet?

4.  Turn on the television

Sounds crazy, no?  Well, it’s true.  When we moved in we purposefully failed to set up the TV and thought we’d see how long we could live without it.  It helps that we haven’t had cable television in five years and therefore don’t know all the good shows we’re surely missing.  But yup, no TV here, at least not one that’s plugged in or even on a floor that we spend any serious amount of time on.

Freshmen year in college I had a lesbian English professor (I point out that she was a lesbian only because this was huge to me at that time, I came from a small town – what can I say) who told us she never watched TV.  She claimed television was a major time waster, she didn’t even have a TV in her house and then went on to suggest we consider throwing a blanket over our TV’s for a week to see what it was like.

Wait.  NO Television?  Blasphemy!  You are cRaZy, lady.  Capital R.  Capital Z.

But here I am, more than 10 years later, thinking about what wise woman she was.  Even though I gave her the evil eye more than once for tearing apart my papers, I like to think she taught me a little something about writing and a little something about how I can choose to spend my scads of free time too.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad things like YouTube and Hulu exist so I can keep up with my homegirls Jillian Michaels and Tina Fey as time allows.  I’m also glad that DVD players in laptop computers exist, as well as movies from the library so I can get my kids out of my hair long enough to write a blog post in peace on a Saturday morning.  But I have to say, I’m starting to think my lesbian English professor was on to something.  Well, one thing anyway.

Kill Your Television

Alright, I’ll kill my television…  Just don’t kill my laptop or YouTube and everything will be alright.

5.  Eaten Meat.

Oh wait, we’re vegetarians.  Never mind.

6. Broken up fights over “The Fun Cup”

Something else we didn’t unpack when we moved in?  All those damn kids dishes that they were constantly bickering over at every meal.  I told them I couldn’t find the box they were packed up in when they asked for the My Little Pony bowl and Strawberry Shortcake plate.  This is true too, I don’t know exactly where that box is.  I’m fairly sure it’s down in the basement, but I haven’t made much of an effort to look for it.

Maybe?

What an evil mother I am! Wicked or not, we’re living in complete peace and harmony (hahahhaha yeah right) without those character melamine plates and bowls.  No more plastic straw cups that never seemed to come totally clean.  With the exception of two renegade sippy cups that made their way over here before our official moving day, the little people in this house are now eating off of mismatched ceramics and drinking out of mason jars just like the rest of us.

So there you have it.  A few new house firsts and a few new house yet-to-happens.  Time to hit publish and go fetch my recycle bin and trash toter from the curb.

Life Goes On

January 21st, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Motivation - (14 Comments)

If I could sum up in one word what I’ve learned over the course of the last couple of weeks here, that word would be:

Balance.

Now of course this concept of “balance” is not a foreign to me or to you or to anyone who is at least somewhat committed to living a healthier life. Balance is something I like to believe I’ve always aimed for, but it’s a lot harder to find that sweet spot when you’ve got a ton of stuff heaped on the scale. And if you don’t stop piling stuff on? The scale is going to eventually buckle and come crashing down. The next thing you know you’re wiping tears from your eyes and resisting the urge to throw yourself into a heap on the floor while singing the lyrics to Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da wondering if the Beatles wrote that song knowing that one day a 5 year old girl in upstate New York would drive her mother crazy by requesting that song be put on repeat every time she gets in the car from May through December.

What’s one of the things that’s kept me sane during these scale crashy times? Running! If you know me or have read this blog for a while this probably comes as no surprise. But it’s true. Without my nice healthy endorphin rush from exercise I would be left trying to figure out a way to get my hands on some powerful mood altering drugs. Instead of adding “buy drugs” to my to-do list and figuring this new expense in to our budget, I’ll just go for a run instead. It’s just the easiest option really, not to mention the option that is least likely to get me into any sort of serious trouble, with the law or otherwise.

I ran this morning in fact, with my neighborhood running group in the cold, dark but at least dry streets. I’m still running regularly but not working out nearly as much as I have over the course of the last year. I’ve come to discover that I don’t need to work out 5 or 6 days a week to maintain my weight and my desired level of fitness. 3 or 4 days a week is perfect, and has come with a load of unexpected benefits. I have more time, I’m not as hungry, and I feel like I’m letting my body have a little break from the rigors of training. It’s felt great to run for maintenance and mental well being instead of focusing how to run faster, longer and stronger.

On the food front, huge salads have been my saving grace, both in a sense of ease and the wonder that is chlorophyll. I can’t say I haven’t taken advantage of the mood altering effects afforded to me by dark chocolate either though. Thank you 70% Green & Black for doing your part in keeping me from flinging myself off a bridge.

Did I ever tell you that melodramatic is my middle name?

In summary, that’s where I’ve been.  I think I might even turn my camera on today or tomorrow. For now, know that  I’m here – running, eating salads and chocolate and taking advantage of the power of loud music too. Chris Brown, I don’t care what you did – turning this one up always makes me feel better.

Signs of Life

January 19th, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Life - (22 Comments)

After a much needed break from the land of blogging, I’m feeling ready to peek my head out and tread carefully into the sea I got swept up and carried off in almost a year ago.

I can make no promises as to the frequency of posts at this time. I haven’t even turned my camera on in well over a week. But I believe that I’m back and if you’re still peeking in even after I locked the blog down, know that there is more Mama’s Weeds craziness in store for all of us in the days and weeks to come.

It’s Not Goodbye

January 10th, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Life - (34 Comments)

A very wise woman once said, blogging is fun, but life is real.

Indeed Mama Pea. Indeed.

Blogging, at least to the extent that I have taken it with two posts a day most days, as well as all the other duties that come along with being active in the blogging community, is time consuming to say the least. As life changes and evolves, the needs of my family as well as my own needs change and evolve too. Time is a pretty hot commodity around here, and while I’ve enjoyed finding the time to blog regularly this spring, summer and fall – our new house and the start of a new year have made it abundantly clear that there is suddenly less time to go around.

I started Mama’s Weeds for so many reasons. I was excited to share my recipes and ideas in the kitchen with my friends and family. I wanted to write about all the great books I’ve read that have made such a difference in my life and have aided me in my personal journey to health and wellness. I also wanted to write about all the ways I fit regular exercise into my hectic life as a wife and homeschooling mother of two.

The blog has taught me so much and has enriched my life on so many levels. Thanks to putting some pressure on myself to post twice a day, every day, for nearly the last 8 months and to keep me from boring myself to tears, the challenges of coming up with new posts so frequently has allowed me to stretch my creative writing legs and in turn, has allowed me discover a new passion that I didn’t even realize I had. I’ve had so much fun writing, learning more about food, cooking, health, exercise and even a little about photography too. I’ve made a lot of new friends, gotten so many great ideas and found so many new sources of inspiration and motivation. It’s been a lot of fun documenting the food and health related events in our lives these past 8 months and has been a real trip sharing part of my life over the world wide web.

I’m not going to completely pull the plug on Mama’s Weeds, but I do need to take a hiatus from regular blogging for the time being. I’ve got to shift my focus and limited spare time and energy on the needs of all the people in my real life that I care so much about.

If you’re looking to find me in cyberspace, I’ll still be hanging out with my homeboy Matt over at Health Blog Helper. That gig is a little less demanding. I’ll be around the blogosphere a bit too – keeping up with my fellow bloggers, leaving ridiculous comments as needed and as time allows. I wouldn’t be completely surprised to see a new post pop up on here from time to time either. I’ll still be cooking and running after all! When I find myself with some extra time, a fantastic new recipe, a funny picture on my camera or story to share – I’ll be back!

Peace!

Let There Be Light

January 8th, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast - (19 Comments)

So for the most part, I have been thoroughly enjoying my 6 AM runs with my new running group. It feels great to get my run in so early and have exercise checked off my list first thing. I enjoy the company and conversation as well as the easy pace of the group.

I do have to be honest about one thing though, and that is that these runs in the dark are starting to wear on me a little. I miss the sun! I miraculously managed to get a run in by myself during the daylight hours on Wednesday. Even though it was an overcast day, it was still nice to be out when the sun was on our side of the earth for a little while. Stingy southern hemisphere.

This morning I realized that if I can’t have the sun, I can at the very least have the essence of the sun in its plant based form. Hi Chlorophyll, you’ll do for now – I’ll take what I can get.

New house, I’d like you meet my good friend Breville. I’m sorry I haven’t properly introduced you to each other sooner!

Breville Introductions

If you look carefully, you’ll notice something missing out of one of those apples.

Today’s juicy concoction would be a giant head of green leaf lettuce, a partial head of red leaf, a couple of carrots, a few inches of ginger, two apples (minus one innocent bite) and two lemons. I’ve recently stopped peeling the lemons and putting them straight in the juicer as is. I’ve noticed that it gives the juice a lot more zing, and I’m assuming that’s from the rind? Maybe instead of saying it gives the juice more zing I should say more zest!

Two glasses of green vegetable juice this morning, one for me and one for him.

Paint Brush Water

Thanks to the red leaf lettuce and carrots, this morning’s green goodness in a glass looks like we’re about to drink the water the girls rinsed their water color paint brushes in. Cucumbers make a much more photo friendly glass of vegetable juice, but carrots or cucumbers – they both taste amazing!

Speaking of introductions, our indoor-outdoor cats (who, until just recently, were temporarily demoted to indoor-only status until we were sure that they knew this is where their food dish is) are starting to get thrown outside again to get back to their indoor-outdoor status. Cats need daylight too after all!

Their new kitty outdoor adventures have allowed them to meet some of the other cats in the neighborhood. Maybe they’ll go running together or something.

Today our male cat Andy (on the right) got to meet this other black and white cat that keeps showing up on our doorstep.

Nice to Meet You

Don’t they look happy to see each other? I know I always lay my ears flat like that when I’m in a good mood and happy to see someone. As a matter of fact, I’m totally laying my ears flat looking at all the clouds in the sky as I type.

Not So Fast

January 6th, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Dinner Time - (19 Comments)

Tonight I had my hopes set on a fast and easy dinner. I was ready to slice up a Kabocha squash that I found recently (at a store, not in my closet or something) but after it’s photo shoot on the cutting board, I flipped it over to find mold growing on the bottom and a bunch of soft spots on it too.

Kabocha

Well alrighty then. I had a few choice words for this Kabocha squash, chucked it into the compost and moved onto the next orange fleshed vegetable on my shelves.

Well Fine Then

OK, still going for fast and easy here – tonight seemed like a good night to give my new mandolin a try and make real sweet potato fries.

Mandolin

Now, please note that I said this mandolin is NEW. I’ve never used this vegetable slicing contraption before. Why I thought this would fit into my “fast and easy” plans for dinner is beyond me. I didn’t bother to read the directions (somewhere my mother is groaning at me!) because that would take too long. I’ll figure it out, let’s just jump right in and get this done, OK?

After my first few attempts at slicing this sweet potato, I now had a few choice words for the potato and the mandolin too. It kept getting jammed, I kept worrying about my fingers being the next thing to be mandolined (not a word), the slices I was getting were way too short. Eventually though, it started to come together and we worked it out. By the time I got to the second potato, I was feeling like an old mandolin pro.

Look Ma! Real fries!

Fries

Onto a coconut oil greased cookie sheet and into the oven at 375.

Real Fries

Fries getting their bake on, I got started making my favorite fast black bean burgers with my favorite BBQ sauce.

Bone Suckin' Sauce

Seriously, this stuff is the best, even if the name wouldn’t lead you to believe it’s vegetarian.

My fast and easy fries were taking their dang sweet time at 375, and after about a half hour I kicked it up 50 degrees and at 425 the sweet potatoes finally took the hint that I was expecting them to cook.

An hour later, fast and easy dinner was finally served.

Dinner

To be enjoyed with the landslide of magazines I picked up at the old house yesterday.

With Mags

One for the breadwinner too, whenever he gets home from winning bread.

For the Bread Winner

Seems like my post is trying to take after dinner tonight.

Let’s Learn Spanish

January 4th, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Dinner Time - (25 Comments)

Well, I have no pictures of our woodland adventures today because we were not there long enough to take any pictures. Within about 10 minutes I had two very cold, cranky girls on my hands that not even a backpack full of refined carbohydrates (pretzels, granola bars, kashi crackers) could turn around. It WAS cold though, the thermostat in the car read 18 on the way home. Oh well. We tried.

Interestingly enough though, Ava said she “couldn’t wait” to go cross country skiing when we got home. Zak brought his childhood cross country skis to the house yesterday and Ava’s been in love with the idea of cross country skiing ever since.

So off she went, cross driveway skiing immediately after bailing out on our homeschooling friends because it was too cold to play outside.

Cross Country Ava

Maxine stuck to her “it’s too cold” guns and we stayed inside to watch Ava and her maiden voyage on cross country skis.

We Watched

I have to say, she did pretty well for her first time, especially considering how cold she was barely an hour earlier.

With our schedule suddenly clear for the afternoon, I had no choice to but get started early with dinner.

On tonight’s menu? Something I haven’t made in what feels like ages: Enchiladas!

One of the reasons I haven’t made enchiladas in a while is my reluctance to use the canned enchilada sauce that I typically use. The ingredient list on the can always make me screw up my face and put the can back down to go find something else to make instead. Tonight was no exception… but with a perfectly ripe avocado giving me the evil eye and practically daring me to make it in to guacamole, I decided to find a way around my canned enchilada sauce dilemma.

After a bit of googling and looking at the label of the enchilada sauce can for clues, I went to work making my own enchilada sauce tonight. This is what I came up with:

1 6 oz can of tomato paste
1 tbsp canola oil
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
2 cups of water (approx)
1 tsp agave nectar
2 tbsp chili powder (more or less to taste)
1 tbsp cumin
1 tsp paprika

Add tomato paste, water and spices to pan on low heat, whisk until smooth. Add spices, canola, agave, and vinegar and continue whisking until simmering, remove from heat.

I took French in high school, but I’ve watched my fair share of Dora the Explorer and I’m fairly sure that “Enchilada” is Spanish for “make a big mess on your stove”. Either that or “use a bigger pan next time, you dope.”

Make a Mess

I ladled enough enchilada sauce into the bottom of a baking dish and then added 5 handsome enchiladas to the pan. I filled each whole wheat tortilla with refried black beans, cooked (frozen) corn, whole black beans and pepper jack cheese, swaddled them like a newborn baby and laid them into the dish on top of the sauce. More sauce ladled over tortillas and then placed them into a pre-heated 350 degree oven for about 35 minutes.

Before

This recipe made more sauce than I needed, but it worked out well because I had plenty to drown these suckers with, when normally I don’t have a drop to spare when using sauce from a can.

After

While my enchiladas were baking, I got to work on that avocado that was giving me dirty looks.

Homemade guac consisting of 1 fork smashed avocado, 1/2 a diced onion, the juice of one lemon, 1 glove minced garlic and salt.

Creamy Goodness

Guacamole is Spanish for “creamy goodness”, right?

I meant to make rice, but I forgot – by the time I remembered I didn’t care anymore so I went wild and ate my enchilada with guac, salsa and no rice.

Enchilada

How do you say “This is the end of my post” in Spanish?

Business as Usual

January 4th, 2010 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast - (13 Comments)

The holidays are over. We have moved into our new house and are mostly settled. A formal complaint was filed yesterday over the lack of home cooked meals and several informal complaints have also been filed over the lack of regular posts in recent weeks as well. It would appear that I am officially out of excuses for not cooking or blogging per usual. Your break is over lady, time to get back to work.

As life inches it’s way back toward “normal”, I got up early to enjoy some quiet time while the gang slept. I skipped running with the group today because these group runs are pretty expensive in the way of time. We are always gone for an hour and while I enjoy hour long runs on cold, icy dark streets as much as you do – I needed time today to dig out all the winter gear and extra layers for our homeschooly adventure in the woods this morning. Fortunately, a journey into the woods completely qualifies as exercise in my mind and I therefore felt justified giving my running sneakers the morning off while I instead made breakfast and packed snacks for today’s outing.

This sample of Bob’s Red Mill Museli was part of the swag from the race on New Years Day. Today seemed like as good a day as any to try it out.

museli

I made it with yogurt today “like the Swiss do” (that’s what it said on the package) but I used 2% Fage instead of regular yogurt. Like the Greek do, I suppose?

The ingredients list oats, wheat, rye, barley, almonds, dates, flaxseed and walnuts. I didn’t see any flax seeds to speak of so I added a few shakes of my own. (Ground flax also of Bob’s Red Mill fame.)
