In the Long Run

Let’s say you want to run a half marathon, but you take a look at a couple training programs and you’re worried that you don’t have time to commit to every single run prescribed in the plan or if you’re really going to be able to keep going through all these snow filled days.

Flower City Challenge 2013

The Flower City Half Marathon here in Rochester is twelve weeks away.  I haven’t officially signed up for this race yet – but I unofficially signed up in my head yesterday, and that totally counts.

Weekend Dance Party Playlist

No baby fingers were stepped on during the making of this blog post.

Just Dance

We don’t have a Wii, but the girls have been playing “Just Dance” at a friend’s house and loving it.  We just recently discovered that you can find many of the dances from this game on YouTube – and now we are unstoppable dancing machines.

My absolute favorite is Mr. Saxobeat, especially the move at 0:36 where she swivels her hips and shoulders. LOVE THAT.  Once I get really good at this I’m going to put my hair in swishy ponytail and go shopping for an identical blue, yellow and pink striped palm tree dress.

First, I must tell you that I did not go to school for graphic design.

How to Dress for Winter Running

Or fashion design.

Next I will tell you that this post comes just in time for it to be 60 degrees here this weekend and there’s a good chance I’ll be running in shorts and a t-shirt that says “Climate Change Scares the Pants off of Me.”

I had an appointment first thing this morning to drop our car off for its annual inspection. Our repair shop is only a mile from home, and since Zak was off today (and all week for the holidays!) I was able to leave him home with the kiddos while I drove the car to the shop. I had a neighbor offer to follow me there and drive me home, but at the last minute I decided to use the opportunity for some early morning exercise and run home instead.

This American Life

A couple of days ago I went for my first run in a long, LONG time. The log from my Garmin tells me my last run was in early January, so that means it’s been nearly 7 months since I’ve done much more than walk for exercise.

Overall, it went well!  I was able to run for about 3/4 of a mile before it started to feel uncomfortable.  I pushed myself to get to the one mile mark before slowing to a walk.  I then walked/ran the next two miles before returning home.

Some Exercise Love

My energy is returning, the second trimester is nearly upon us here!  I almost feel like I’m starting to recognize myself again, larger waist circumference notwithstanding.

I’ve spent every spare moment of the last two days catching up on some long overdue housework.  I forgot how good my stairs look without a nest of dust bunnies in every corner.  All the finger smears and toothpaste splatters have been wiped from the mirrors.  The laundry is caught up, the floors have been mopped and I finally sucked the giant cob web out of the corner of our entry way (with the vacuum, people) that I’ve been staring at for weeks.

Puppet Run

So I hurt my wrist.

Wrist Hurt

I know. It’s always something, right? Left pointer finger. Left knee. Left wrist. What’s left?

I’m not even sure how I did it. I think it’s keyboard/ergonomics related, so I’ve changed some things up on my desk, but the pain went from “niggly” to “bad” to “awful” in a matter of days. Dr. Google suggested a wrist brace and it’s helping! The real doctor today said the same thing about the brace, but didn’t agree with my self diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Caution: Zombies Ahead

We survived!

We Did It

Literally, anyway.

Our day started in the car where we enjoyed breakfast in the form of pumpkin oats and lunch in the form of hummus, veggies,

pita chips and my favorite portable protein; hard boiled eggs.

Five hours later, we finally made it to Zombie Land

in time for our 4 o’clock wave start.

We decided we were all fast enough to be Entrees. (vs. Fast appetizers or Slow desserts.)

Good News Bad News

October 18th, 2011 | Posted by Alison Spath in Fitness - (3 Comments)

I ran today.  I made it 3.25 miles without a hint of knee pain.  And the final .9 miles home weren’t much to complain about either.

And this is good news! I have a race on Saturday. It’s a 5K, (3.1 miles) so now I’m sure I’ve got that distance covered.

But there’s bad news too.  You see, it’s a race where runners are chased through the woods by zombies.
