Cuppow for Me, Cuppow For You

Have you heard of Cuppow?

Cuppow

It’s a drinkable lid that you can use with a canning jar.

(I think I’ve made it obvious that we like to drink out of canning jars here?)

I love canning jars as glasses mostly because they’re so sturdy – when the girls were really little I was frustrated with how frequently regular glasses were breaking.  I soon noticed that the few small and wide mouth canning jars we had hanging around were the only glasses that were holding up.  I eventually stopped replacing our broken glasses altogether and just used canning jars and old almond butter jars instead.  Soon, our entire glasswear collection consisted of glasses with threading at the top.  Oops.

A few weeks ago I posted a picture of Kaz’s green mustache after his sampling of a little green lemonade.  A friend then left a comment asking me if I knew about Cuppow – a sippy lid for canning jars.   I hadn’t heard of Cuppow, but I checked it out and I love the concept.  A sippy lid to use on glasses we already have!  It fits perfectly under the ring for the jar.  It’s small and durable, reusable and dishwasher safe – and I LOVE that this is going to save us from the clutter of a million plastic sippy cups.  (Been there, done that.)  Our once-little-now-bigger girls love drinking out of this too, and it makes a great travel cup kids and adults alike.

We were gifted our first Cuppow by a very sweet friend a few days ago, so we gave it a try!

Cuppow Lid

Celery, pear, ginger and lime juice (with cucumber this time too) is my new favorite juice combo.  The celery has this slight “salty” flavor to it – I really like it.  And it was the perfect juice to take our new Cuppow lid for a spin.

Juice for me and a little for Kaz today too.

One for Baby

He knew exactly what to do with it!  Amazing!  Or maybe he just puts EVERYTHING into his mouth – food, Cuppow or otherwise.

He Knows What To Do

For what it’s worth, whenever I say “Cuppow”, I have this urge to put a strong emphasis on the “pow” part of the name – like, CupPOW!  And then I imagine doing a right uppercut to the chin of whomever is standing nearest to me.

Cuppow.  Kah POW!  Maybe that’s what they were getting at when they decided on a name?  I’m fast like that.

(No, I did not give my baby an uppercut to the chin before I offered him some Celery Pear Lime and Ginger juice.)

Anyways.

The opening in the lid is a little big for my 9 month old guy as a relative newbie to drinking from a cup.  Liquid comes out sort of fast for him right now – but he’ll obviously get the hang of it with time.  The girls think Cuppow is totally fun to drink from and I can see using the widemouth lid for myself or Zak to take a drink along on the go.

I wrote this post because I am truly excited about this product.  I couldn’t wait to spread the word to my other canning jar drinking friends in this world – I know we’re not the only ones out there drinking from glass jars!  This is also great for those of you who prefer to avoid eating and drinking from plastic whenever you can – Cuppow can be an affordable way to make it really easy to take glass with you on the go.

But if I’m going to tell you about it, it’s way more fun to spread the Cuppow love while I’m at it.  I emailed the good people at Cuppow to find out if they’d help me do a giveaway along with my post – and Cuppow very generously offered to give away two of their lids (one regular mouth and one wide mouth) to TWO READERS!

Wanna play?  Leave a comment telling me a.) why you drink out of canning jars OR b.) that you don’t currently drink out of a canning jar, but this lid makes it look totally fun and now you want to try it!

This giveaway is now closed as of April 12, 2013, 7:42 AM EDT.  Thanks to everyone for playing – a big CUPPOW! congrats to:

Yessssssss! Knew you’d love it! That picture of Kaz makes me laugh :) Mira uses hers as a toy even when it’s not on a jar… our newest hurdle though, getting her to not THROW the jar when she’s done! Maybe Cuppow needs to invent some sort of rubber netting to go over the jar… None broken yet, but it’s still early :)

On the juicing note, I got rid of our juicer years ago (in one of our many state-to-state moves)… Do you think I could make these juices in the blender if I strain them after?? Other ideas? I’d like to start making juice again… hopefully it will help my recovery from the n00b (only 5 weeks left!).

    • Yes, you can make juice without a juicer – I read about using nut milk bags to strain smoothies made in the blender into juice when writing A Few Juicy Details – there are links and info there. A few people left comments too saying that this is how they juice and it works well for them, so it seems totally doable!

Oh man, The Life and Times of a Toddler – how quickly I’ve forgotten! That rubber netting is not a bad idea!

      • Lancy says:

        Great! I’ll check it out!

…and yes, I’m learning quickly! I keep telling myself, “Oh dear… there’s going to be two of them!” :) She was sweet & innocent when she couldn’t move around, but now I fear she’s got a streak of the mama in her!! Speaking of her crazy mama- I found some great pics of us (naked of course) on the sailboats… I’m going to have to get a scanner or something…….

  • This is so fun! I don’t think I have a particular reason for liking to drink out of jars. It’s just fun. My husband and I also have several jar glasses from our favorite bar in college, so I can pretend I’m a carefree 21-year-old again. I also love the reusability factor of jars. This would be perfect for my morning iced coffee!

I also liked on FB and followed on Instagram!

  • Andrew says:

I have to try it as a coffee travel mug. Have you tried it yet?

  • andrea says:

you know we use them! what really want are the ones with the handle. we needs these lids because A.) the damn cats drink out of my water on the nightstand! ewwwwwww B.) one certain cat likes to knock R’s water off his shelf onto his head in je middle of the night. nice, eh? so i need these because of our cats. oy! lol

  • Cris says:

Love this! I want one to take my jars on the go with me to work or running errands :-)

  • Cris says:

Oh, I follow cuppow on twitter and liked them on facebook

  • There is also directions on Pinterest to make a lid using the canning rings and tops with a rubber gasket, drill a hole for a straw, and you have a straw sippy cup.

  • James says:

I already love #cuppow like my own child and social media the heck out of them. I only always Cuppow my beverage of choice…coffee. Drinking from a canning jar makes me a hipster. Slide a #freakerusa over the jar and you have a reusable drinking container that you can be proud of.

  • Chris Birch says:

We finally through a housewarming party and made about 5 gallons of sangria for our guests. It is the BEST EFFING SANGRIA I have ever tasted. While our friends helped do some damage, we still have two giant Ball jars full of the juice that have taken up residence in our fridge. If you give me a Cuppow, I’ll put one on the sangria jars and FINALLY DRINK THE REST. photographic evidence promised.

I also just followed you on twitter (@huplikewhoa) and Facebook. Cheers!

  • sarah says:

meee! pick meeee! ball jars are the only way to go around here for dry bulk storage. in the summer I make iced coffee and shake w/ milk/sweetener and a Cuppow lid would be awesome.

  • Curtis says:

I would love to use it in the office. It would be a great conversation starter.

  • Courtney says:

What a great idea. Healthy and space saving. I hate plastic sippy cups and would love to be able to get rid of them.

  • Brett says:

I’ve been drinking out of canning jars for over a decade because we kept breaking other glasses. Canning jars are durable, dishwasher safe and do a fine job of presenting my downhome cocktails.

I’ve been a cuppow fan for a while.

    I liked cuppow on fb.

    I followed cuppow on twitter.

    I followed cuppow on instagram.

  • Katheryn says:

We have lots of jars, but don’t typically drink out of them. Now I think I want to. Those lids look great!

  • How cool! I was just telling my husband about these last week. We agreed that they would be fabulous for picnics, where we want a much sturdier glass to hold our beverages of choice.

  • Carrie C. in VA says:

Neat idea. I would try with this lid! Currently I only use canning jars for bulk food storage.

  • I love using canning jars bc I have an abundance of them, they are glass/nontoxic, and inexpensive. I love the idea of cuppow fort 3 year old!

Oh, and I say cupPOW the way you do and think of lightening McQueen “Kachow!”

  • Bianca says:

If there was a LOVE tab on their faceboook page I would have hit it! Myself and my two children and juice and smoothie addicts to say the very least, one look at my blog and you will see this is very true. We always drink out of jars because a) glasses simply are not big enough for the drinks I make, and b) as you said above, it seems to work well with the kiddies. I love that they can have half of there smoothie, I can screw on the lid and save the rest for later. Great find!!!

  • B. Gomicchio says:

The kids drink water out of them now instead of plastic cups. It all started one fateful playdate at your house when you served my kiddos strawberry/banana smoothies in glass jars and I thought, “Hey, that’s a good idea!” Imitation is the best form of flattery, right? :)

Funny you just discovered the lids now, too. I (independently!) discovered them over the weekend and was just thinking about getting some.

I “liked” CUPPOW on fb. :)

  • Be still, my beating heart! At long last, a solution to our ongoing dilemma: “how the heck am I going to drink this green smoothie in the car?” Brilliant!

  • Beth Gallagher says:

I do use canning jars as glasses, but was totally thrilled to find Cuppow! I haven’t gotten one yet, as cash is a bit scarce with 2 recent adoptions, but will soon. LOVE the idea and can’t wait to try one! I follow them on facebook and twitter too. So happy to have found your blog too! 😀

  • Katie says:

I use jars every single day for many different uses. I definitely drink out of the jars! Easily washed in a dishwasher or by hand. I use them for food storage containers instead of the plastic ones. Very sturdy and hard to break. Using canning jars reduces waste. Cuppow makes those drinking glasses portable! Who doesn’t love portable!

  • Amanda says:

I love jars for taking my juice or smoothie with me to work! :)

  • I ogle cuppow
    I want cuppow!
I want cuppow for me, my spouse, my daughter & son in law and my grandson!
My mother always drank out of mason jars! Now that there’s cuppow, I will too, because it makes my juice or smoothie easier to take with me!
Mason jars are a natural! No BPAs, recyclable, easy to clean, sustainable!
    I LOVE cuppow on facebook!

  • Kathryn says:

I’ve been drinking smoothies out of wide-mouth quart-size canning jars for several years. I’d seen Cuppows, but didn’t think they’d be worth the cost, until I received one in one of my monthly VeganCuts goody boxes. I LOVE that thing! I take a thermos full of herbal tea to work every day, and have been drinking it out of a pint-sized (sometimes 24-ounce size) canning jar with a Cuppow lid. The lids (yes, I orders some after trying out the first one) I have don’t have the straw hole (and I don’t need it or want it, as I don’t use straws), and they are just like the lids from coffee shops.

P.S. I already “like” the Cuppow FB page.

  • K J says:

We drink out of canning jars here quite often…mostly b/c we have so many! Would love a cuppow!

  • K J says:

    like cuppow on fb!

  • Stevie says:

I love canning jars, that’s what i grew up on! When I got married I broke so many glasses so we went to jars too (my parents were right lol). I haven’t got a cuppow but I plan to next payday! My son needs a sippy cup that is more like a real cup! I also am a cuppow fan on Facebook! Nice blog!

  • Deanna Miller says:

I love canning jars! I have been collecting old ones for display and we use the newer ones for storing leftovers in the fridge. My husband hates plastic storage, can never find the correct lids. I have my dishwashing soap in a jar with a pump on it by the sink. Around 20 years ago I saw in a magazine an idea for jar lights. My husband made them for me and they hang above my antique sellers kitchen cabinet. So basically I am “jar crazy.” Recently I found a Ball jar with straight sides, wide mouth, that holds 20 oz. I am looking for more, but evidently the company no longer makes them. :( That is the ideal size for iced tea. I will be knitting some jar sleeves for this one. I have seen the cuppow online and will order one soon! I wondered if they were going to be available in stores in the near future. Anyway, I would LOVE to have cuppows!

    Thanks!

  • Claire T. says:

I love Cuppow! Sometimes it’s really hard to be eco-friendly when you live on campus in college, but these have helped me cut down on my waste big time. Hopefully I will save up enough for a juicer soon so I can try your recipe out! :)
I also follow Cuppow on FB and my boyfriend does on Instagram/Twitter.

  • Megan says:

I don’t currently drink out of canning jars, but I do use them for other things: I’ve been trying the salad-in-a-jar meals (which have been pretty awesome!). My boyfriend brought some home from a work project a few weeks ago and I’ve been dying to try them with a Cuppow!

  • Derek says:

I love my Cuppow! I drink out of wide mouth canning jars because they are EXTREMELY easy to clean and hold a lot of liquid. It’s always tough to get fruit seeds out of thin glasses that you can’t reach the bottom of. Wide mouth canning jars not only look nice, but you can reach every corner of them when cleaning. Oh, and Cuppow will be introducing their wide mouth lid with Straw-Tek in a week or so!! Everyone should have a few of these lids laying around.

  • Jonnie says:

I discover the Cuppow lids on a friend’s facebook page a few weeks back so checked into them and thought it would be totally worth drinking out of a canning jar just to have lids that can be reused instead of tossed every time!!

What a great idea these guys came up with and will not doubt make lots of money and come up with other wonderful ideas.

I would so love to win these lids and start using them asap… :)

  • kimberly says:

I love my cuppow and want a wide mouth one! Love to drink out of glass in the classroom!

  • Lisa Godfrey says:

Like you, all of my regular glasses broke and all I was left with were the Mason jars that our favorite Alfredo sauce comes jared in. The problem I had after that was the kids throwing away the Alfredo Mason jars so I would have to buy more yummy Alfredo sauce!

  • Jessi Goodman says:

I drink out of jars so I can screw the lid on and throw them in the diaper bag.
    I liked Cuppow on fb.

  • Helen A. Osbourne says:

Great idea, brought back from the 60’s when mom used to pack lemonade in canning jars for trips to the lake. I hate plastic water bottles, and I frown on disposable beverage containers too. I can’t wait to get started using Cuppow to tote my drinks. Clean and green and very hip for every grandma.

  • Debra Schramm says:

I just ordered 9 pint and a half Ball canning jars to use as drinking glasses. There the perfect size – tall and 24 ounces. The Cuppow lids would be great for travel! I definitely need these.

  • Debra Schramm says:

    I like Cuppow on Facebook.

  • Helen A. Osbourne says:

Oops… I Liked Cuppow on Face Book ~ Followed Cuppow and pinned them on Pinterest. Sorry I don’t Twitter.

  • Julie says:

As of recently I have lots of canning jars and I love finding new and interesting ways of using them. I received a regular mouth cuppow as a gift and I’d love a wide mouth version. I also want one of these holdsters too, they’re awesome. http://www.holdsterusa.com/products/holdster-rivet

Also, I like Cuppow on facebook and twitter. :)

  • Melanie says:

I don’t own regular drinking glasses, I use my canning jars because they are much more bomber, especially with my own weeds using them. I think the cuppow is BRILLIANT, and love mine.

  • Lisa Godfrey says:

P.S. I also follow Cuppow on FB, Twitter, & Instagram! :-)

  • Leanne says:

Whats more refreshing than an ice tea from a mason jar?! Plus, we love using the small 1/2 pint mason jar for our little one- so durable and no more icky plastic!

  • amy says:

Drinking out of jars is fun, cool, neat, plus some sizes hold more….. like the gallon size. Wonder if they have a cuppow in that size? :)

  • Mylissa Gholson says:

We have always used canning jars and those jelly-jars. I use the quart size when I take ice-tea to my husband on the tractor with no accidents. Now that I have found the Cuppows, I have fixed me a margarita in a jar, turn my cuppow upside down, put the lid back on and seal it up and pop it in cooler til I want it! I follow Cuppow on Facebook. Love the product!

  • Lea Shelton says:

I am so excited to try out a cupwow with my 16 month old! He loves drinking from cups, but I hate how hard it is to clean sippy cups!! As for canning jars, I’m kind of a jar-saving junkie! I just can’t get rid of a jar that I can imagine might somehow, someday be useful!

  • Erin says:

Cup-pow! I think of it the same way. My daughters both drink out of canning jars b/c it’s so fun! The 6 yr old doesn’t need a lid anymore, but the 2 year old often spills her big sis’s drink. Maybe regular for the littl’un and widemouth for the big’un?

  • Sara B. says:

I drink coffee out of a canning jar with a cuppow lid every morning on my commute– the jars and lids are easy to clean (the same cannot be said for many other travel mugs) and I always have a ton of canning jars on hand! I liked Cuppow on Facebook too!

  • anna says:

I drink out of masons and am a former cuppow owner. My hubs accidentaly recycled mine! I would love a replacement for all the colorful summer drinks. :)
