Banana Whip Oats

August 21st, 2011 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast - (5 Comments)

I go through phases where I eat oats every day. And then there are times where the oatmeal canister gathers dust on its top. This week I’ve been back in that oat phase, and am apparently in a frozen banana phase too.

I discovered this concoction last week by accident, really – I can’t even tell you what possessed me to throw oats in the food processor when making banana whip. I just know that I did.

1 frozen banana (approx.)
1/2 c rolled oats
1 heaping Tbsp hemp seeds (optional, for protein)

We’ve gotten a slew of peaches from the CSA share in recent weeks – more peaches than we can eat.

Or really, more peaches than I am currently in the mood to eat.

Don’t get me wrong – summer peaches are fabulous. But frankly, I am peached out. I’ve thrown enough Peach Pits into our compost pile this month to change my zip code to 90210.

(it’s possible I had a poster of Luke Perry hanging on my bedroom wall from approximately 1992 until 1994…)

More Melon Madness

Peas. Coffee. Popsicles. Pajamas. What the heck time is it anyway?

Peas Coffee Pajamas

Why it’s time for breakfast, of course.

What? You don’t eat peas and watermelon for breakfast? Well then you haven’t lived!

Actually, it’s time to tell you that this popsicle mold has paid for itself.

Popsicle Molds Pay for Themselves

This is especially true because our neighbor gave it to us and I didn’t pay a dime for it.

And this is especially good because the handles break off pretty easily.

Thaw Slightly Before Twisting

And if I’d have paid for it, that would be especially annoying.

I Cut Up a Cantaloupe Today

See?

Cut Up a Cantaloupe

While slicing up that there cantaloupe I got to thinking about Natalia Rose’s line from the The Raw Food Detox Diet about fruit:

Eat it alone or leave it alone.

Food combining rules say you should eat only eat fruit on empty stomach because when mixed with other foods, it can lead to fermentation, stomach pains and gas.  As I understand it, it has to do with the enzymes that are released to digest fruit vs. what’s released to digest other foods.

White Bean Garlic and Rosemary Spread

August 15th, 2011 | Posted by Alison Spath in Lunch - (Comments Off on White Bean Garlic and Rosemary Spread)

One day last week I read a post by blog friend Erin who shared a simple recipe for a white bean dip.  Seriously simple, seriously fast and seriously delicious-looking, thus totally qualifing as the perfect unplanned dinner.

Beans, herbs, salt, oil, into the food processor, contents scraped into a bowl, veggies prepped, Ezekiel bread into the toaster oven.  On the table for a fast summer meal for the man before running out the door to my favorite yoga class mere moments after he got home from work.  I didn’t even have a chance to sample a single bite.

Whenever I get carrots like this:

Carrots with the Greens Attached

I feel really cool.

Like – That’s right! My carrots are so crunchy granola they still have their crazy green tentacles attached, yo!

These greens are like mace for hippies. They protect me as I walk back to my car from CSA pick up. They totally say “Don’t mess with my home girl or I’ll latch on to your face and suck the soul straight from your celery stalkin’ body.”

Wow.  But hey, you can’t say I didn’t warn you. My carrots love me. That’s the real reason I support local farms you know.

Getting Ready for a Race

August 12th, 2011 | Posted by Alison Spath in Fitness - (1 Comments)

I’ve got a 5K road race tomorrow morning, so all of my usual pre-race rules are on my mind. If you’ve got an upcoming race on your calendar – here are a couple of things to think about before you toe the line.

Nothing New on Race Day

Let’s say that again.

NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY.

Race day is not the day for brand new clothes, brand new shoes, brand new food or brand new crazy ideas. Stick with tried and true gear and grub.  No new theory or hypothesis testing today either.

The Squeakmobile

August 12th, 2011 | Posted by Alison Spath in Morning Craziness - (6 Comments)

I slept with my camera on the bedside table last night, ready to capture my daily wake up at the ass crack of dawn.

(It came at 4:32 yesterday!)

When I heard the squeakmobile coming down the street this morning, it got all lights, camera, ACTION! up in here.  Now I can show you exactly what I’m talking about.

You can even hear the damn cat meowing at me at the end there.

I think the cat and the car are in cahoots to keep me awake.

CAN’T A GIRL GET SOME SLEEP AROUND HERE?

This is the story of how an SUV in need of new shocks inspired a sweet, frosty post-ride treat today.

Ready?

Every day at approximately 4:55 AM, the squeakiest newspaper delivery vehicle this side of the Mississippi river squeaks down my street. It makes two or three unbelievably squeaky stops at the houses directly across the street from our bedroom window and then moves on to squeak through and disturb the rest of the neighborhood.

Zucchini Lasagna

Got a lot of zucchini right now?

Two Zucchinis Walk Into a Bar

Yeah, me too.

Did you know you can use zucchini in place of pasta in lasagna?

It’s true.  I proved it tonight.

To start, you’ll need two large zucchinis – slice length wise into 1/4 inch strips. (Think thin!) Place into a colander and salt each slice to start removing some of their water.

Preheat oven to 350 and set your zucchini aside for about 20 minutes to sweat it out over the sink.

Meanwhile, get to work on your sauce and cheese layers.
