Finger Felon: Out On Bail

June 24th, 2011 | Posted by Alison Spath in Life

I get a surprising amount of traffic from people searching the web for information on finger felons.  A finger felon is an infection in the tip of your finger and this happened to me at the end of last year.

It turns out that finger felons are not that common. Blogging about finger felons is apparently even less common. Go figure.

I feel like I owe the people in search of info on finger felons an “It’s Going to Be OK!  (Someday.)” post, so here it is.

To those of you who found your way here because you have pain in your finger and think you might have an infection in your finger tip, let me be the first to say, “Hi!”

Then I’ll say, “I’m sorry”.

I’m sorry because I know how much this hurts.  I’m sorry because I know how ridiculous you feel searching the internet about  your painful, swollen, feels-like-it-could-rupture finger tip.  I’m sorry because your cooking, dish washing and keyboard practices are about to be seriously thrown for a loop.

But please, don’t despair.  This too shall pass.  Life will return to normal.  You will pick your nose with your pointer finger again some day.  Promise.

Here’s my left pointer finger today, 7 months post finger felon surgery.

Healed Finger Felon Scar

Not too shabby, eh?

It’s just a thin white line down the middle of my finger now.  I’m pleased to report that it has looked like this for a few months I’d say.  It was tender from the surgery for quite a while, but doesn’t hurt at all anymore.  I can say that I do have some loss of sensation in the pad of that finger.  I also have a big old wad of scar tissue in there that feels like some surgical instrument may have been left behind.

And now for the Google Search Q&A portion of our post.

Q: how do you get a felon in your finger?

A: I’ve come to the conclusion that mine probably had something to do with a sliver I got in my finger a couple months before this all went down. Actually, it probably had more to do with my digging around for said sliver with a not-at-all-sterilized safety pin I most likely snagged from my junk drawer. Let that be a lesson for the rest of you!

Q: how bad is a finger felon

A: Well, you’re probably not going to die, but yes, it’s gonna suck for a while. (Again, I’m sorry.)

Q: is cold bad for finger felon

A: cold, like an ice pack? I don’t think it will make things worse, but it’s going to take a lot more than some ice cubes in wash cloth to make this thing go away.  If it is in fact a felon, you’re probably gonna be talked into having it lanced open and drained.  Put that ice in your drink and wash down your Vicodin.

Q: how to drain felon infection

A: Go to the doctor, go directly to the doctor. Do not pass go, do not attempt to do this yourself at home. Be prepared to fork over $200.

Q: self care of a finger felon?

A: Before or after surgery? You can’t do jack squat with this thing at home. At least that’s what the orthopedic surgeon scared me into believing. After? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you what you need to do. If you have a more specific question, I welcome you to leave it in the comments for all the future finger felons of the world to read.

Q:  time to heal felon finger

A: My finger was sliced open in mid-November.  I think I was done with the twice daily soakings and bandaging two weeks later, going completely naked fingered again before The Man with the Bag left presents under our tree.

Q: felon finger infection picture

A: OK, but remember: you asked for it. Clicky clicky to enlarge.

but.. but.. why do they call it a felon?

    • Nobody could answer this question for me. My best guess is that they were trying to be funny. You need something laugh about when this stupid thing is waking you up the middle of the night because it hurts so bad.

    wow.
    1. I’d been wondering, no kidding, “I wonder how that finger of hers is doing?”. Glad it’s doing OK!
    2. it’s great that you wrote up this post, since obviously there is a crying need for this important information to be out there, and I’m for once not being facetious
    3. here’s what people end up on my blog having looked for: “plant eats woman” “heroin sauce” and “portable screened in porch”. Also, “pig on a leash”. Yes, I have a very successful Nature Network blog, can you tell?

This post made me laugh all the way through it! Apologies to those of you who actually suffer from a finger felon. If I ever get one I am definitely tying a bandanna on it and drawing two eyes with a mask above it.
People find my blog by googling “how many cows in a hamburger patty’ and ‘vegan food at islands of adventure’ ha

Just found your blog….i have a felon infection at the moment and firstly can i say its the most painfull thing i have ever experienced. This is just 4 weeks after a motorcycle accident in which i broke 4 bones including my sternum and believe me the felon is ten times worse. Its pre surgery at the moment so hopefully the anti biotics work……!!!

  • Pam says:

I had one in my thumb 20 years ago when I was camping. I wouldn’t let them cut me in the er and so I took the antibiotics and pain pill and soaked the hell out of that baby. Now I got another one in my “up yours!” finger on the left hand. They didn’t cut it open but put me on antibiotics and told me to soak it. I hope I don’t have to get it cut open.

  • Jeff says:

I’ve got one. It didn’t seem to be getting better after 5 days, so I had it looked at. The doc gave me strong antibiotics, told me to soak it twice daily in Epsom salt solution and Naproxen for pain.

I can vouch that this ailment hurts like hell. I lost a lot of sleep!

    I just had the incesion
Two days ago how long until the swelling goes down?

OMG! I have a thumb felon right now!!!! Found you throughout google…best …blog….post …ever.
Getting it sliced open tomorrow morning,,,,

  • Erin says:

I am seeing the hand surgeon tomorrow. I’ve been to my PND twice, a general surgeon today who said he wasn’t comfortable incising a felon.
I’ve not slept in three days. I wish the antibiotics last week didn’t work some, because before some of the swelling went away, the thumb twitching annoyed me, but my felonious index finger was numb. Now it throbs. All the time but harder at night.
    Wish me luck!

    • Oh Erin, you poor thing! It’s SO hard to believe that pain in tip of your finger can be so disruptive until you’ve been there. Glad you are seeing a specialist today, I hope you get some real relief soon!

  • Erin says:

    Sorry. That’s PMD

  • Chrissy says:

As painful as my finger is, this was halarious to read.. The pics made me want to throw up but I’ve feeling a bit queasy for the past couple of days (ever since my finger starting swelling and throbbing-related?) Haven’t been to the doctor yet but I plan to today, hopefully. I work with some general surgeons so I’m going to let one of them look at it and see what he suggests. Thanks for the post – just what I was looking for!

  • Chavonis says:

I had started developing a felon Sunday night, and just yesterday at 1 pm did the hand specialist put me to sleep and then surgery. I NEVER thought my finger would get better. Right now it’s bandaged much likes yours from the picture. I had a huge abcess and just wondered if they cut you on the front of your finger as well. (my mom instructed the doctors not to tell me details or anything from the surgery.) Also, along with an abcess, was your finger filled with a lot of visible pus?
-The only thing that I do know is that he pulled off my finger nail to get everything. He also said that it must’ve been developing for a long time because the things had engulfed 2/3s of my finger and kept swelling! Happy that I’m on the road to recovery and can finally go back to school Monday. :)

    • What a story Chavonis! My finger was not filled with a lot of visible pus (ACK!) just red, swollen and painful, but nothing that you could “see” from the outside. I hope your recovery has gone well these past few days and your feeling a lot of improvement by now!

  • Marie says:

Hi! I know you wrote this in 2011 but I hope you still respond! I currently have a felon finger. One day it wad hurting on the side ofmy nail and ithought it was “una uña enterada” (if you know Spanish) but then later on in the night it started to swell up. I took some Tylenol but it didn’t last long and it didn’t let me sleep cause it hurt SO BAD. I ended up going to the hospital at 2 in the morning. And yea they cut my finger open but the doc told me to not take off the wrapping and keep it dry and to come back in 2 days to get it checked. And they gave me antibiotics. When I went to get it checked he said it was healing fine and he took everything off and just put a lil bandage on it and told me to just keep it dry and keep taking the antibiotics. But now 2 more days later, it doesn’t look right. The part where it was initiallybhurting (the side of my nail by the skin) it was grayish and I saw a little piece of skin and I pulled it off. And then out of nowhere I saw puss coming out! So I’m kinda worried if that’s ohkay? Did the doc do something wrong because itddidn’t “drain out” from the cut like the docs said. I’m a little worried /:

    • Hi Marie, so sorry you’re dealing with a finger felon. If you think something isn’t right, I would definitely head back to the doctor. As I mentioned in this post, I had to soak my finger twice a day for two weeks and I had no complications while healing, so I’m not sure what to think about the keeping it completely dry part. When I went back for my two week check up my orthopedic surgeon said my finger looked really good and he was “surprised I followed his instructions” (maybe because so many people don’t? he was sort of a jerk, but at least he knew what he was doing…) so I think the finger soaking was an important part of the healing process and helped it heal from the inside, out. I’m definitely not recommending you soak your finger, but maybe consider getting a second opinion from a hand specialist. I read horror stories online from people who had their finger felon cut open in the ER, needing more surgery, lots of pain, delayed healing, reinfection, etc. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

      • Marie says:

Ohkay, thank you! I just feel like they cut my finger open for no reason cause the puss came out of the side of my finger. But how do you do the soakings? Is it just hot water? Someone told me hot waterand salt. And for how long? Thank you (:

  • sore Thumb Sandra says:

I was wondering if the whole process hurts. Like with the numbing and the incision. And does it hurt afterwards

    • I wish I had better news for you Sore Thumb Sandra… but yes, it hurts. I was given some heavy duty pain meds that helped, changing the bandage the first few times was what was the worst – staying on top of the meds was important and when it was bandaged well it was generally OK. Good luck, hope you’re thumb feels better soon!
