A Free Glass with Every Jar

November 3rd, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast

Insomnia struck early this morning from about 2 until 4am. I slept in and got up when the girls did sometime before 8. I did yoga at home this morning with only a few interruptions for granola bars and one bonked head. A big shout out to Caillou today for baby sitting for about 40 minutes while mama got her downward dog on.

Caillou is not so great at preventing five year old’s from smashing their heads into things. Oh well, what can I say. He’s four – and he didn’t charge me.

Thanks to some suggestions from Yogi Averie, I stepped up the intensity today and kicked it up a notch from my usual Gentle Hatha classes to Yoga for Runners and Morning Flow.

Yoga for Runners is serious stuff – I’m still wondering if Dawnelle might be a yogi masochist.

After a myriad of deep twists and forward bends, visions of detoxing danced in my head. Might as well come full circle and finish it up with some green juice.

Ava asked to make fresh apple juice FIRST, so she wouldn’t get any green in her juice. We hit up the apple orchard yesterday, one more time before they close for the season! I think we picked every last apple off the trees yesterday. Or at least you might think we did given the 17 lbs of apples we brought home. At $.40 a lb just try and tell me you wouldn’t do the same thing!

More Apples

The girls won’t drink green juice or green smoothies, but I figure fresh apple juice is a step in the right direction. They are eager to help and be a part of the juicer action and that gives me hope for green juice in their future.

Ava Juices

Cinderella gets jazzed up and puts her arms in the air from fresh squeezed juice! Heeeyyyy…. hooooooeeee….

Cinderella Approves

Ummm Cinderella? I think you’ve got something on your blouse there… in a very interesting location.

Now it’s my turn. My favorite combo!

Juice for Mom

Nice and green! Arms in the air! Whoops don’t spill!

Green Juice for Mama

And yes, we do drink out of mason jars. I got tired of broken glasses – mason jars are sturdy! Plus I get a new glass free with every jar of almond butter I buy! Beats a toy in the bottom of cereal box any day.

Still in a calorie math frame of my from last night, I decided to figure out how many calories were in my green juice from today. I’ve always been curious, and I know some of you have asked me before too and I didn’t know the answer.

Based on the weight from my food scale and info from calorie count:

Small head of romaine: 50
Whole cucumber: 45
Apple: 110
Spinach, about 2 cups: 20
Lemon: 17
Ginger: 20

Grand total? 262

These are the numbers on the fruit and vegetables themselves, I wonder if it actually might be a little less without the fiber? If so, probably minimally.

This made a lot of juice. Two 12 oz servings – so that would be 131 calories per 12 oz glass. About 87 calories for an 8oz glass. Now we know. Don’t hold me to these numbers in a court of calorie law please. I’m tired! I was up in the middle of the night! Leave a little room for error. Leave a lot of room for green juice rawesomeness.

YES, if I had an apple orchard nearby and apples were .40 cents a lb…I’d be there!
and fresh apple juice is a PERFECT way to introduce fresh juices to kids! AND it’s DELISH! MMMMMMMMMMMM
WAY to go Ava for helping MOM with the juicer!

ahhhhhhhhhh deep bendy yoga is the BEST! I’ve been doing a second round of yoga at night while JJ plays because in the morning I can’t twist as far etc. Feels so good!

and how way cool was it of Caillou to baby sit. SWEET!

I love your mason jar collection. I have a few now thanks to you!

I’ve been having strange insomnia lately too….I’ve been sleeping a couple hours then getting up…doing things around the house for a few hours, then finally returning to bed. Fun fun!Hope yours goes away (and mine too ;)). Again, so jealous of the fresh picked apples (and juice). Makes me want to go grab an apple right now

    • Alison says:

That’s exactly what I did Erica – I got up and poked around on the web for a couple hours and got somethings done – then back to bed. For me it’s always too much stuff on my mind!

You my dear are a bad influence! Ok so maybe not but it was fun to say it… what I really mean is that although I promised myself NO MORE GADGETS (after the Garmin purchase) I found myself perusing the Costco website and see that they have the Breville juicer for $99! But you just make the juice look soooooo good! And there’s only so much you can do with a Magic Bullet right? Hmmmm it may just end up on my Christmas list!! Except that I’ll have to do the Santa shopping for that one because my kids think I have WAY TOO MANY gadgets and would never buy it!! What do they know?!

    Have a great day!!

My daughter will drink green lemonade which I love, but neither of my children will try a green monster. Oh well. I can’t quite get accustomed to cucumber or celery in my juice. But, I do keep trying! And I love your mason jar glasses.

    • Alison says:

That’s funny that they will drink one but not the other. When I make them berry and banana smoothies I will usually sneak in a few spinach leaves when no one is looking – not enough that it changes the color but enough to make me feel like they got a little green goodness!

I HATE CALLIOU. There, I said it. Lulu is OBSESSED with him and if I hear that theme song one more time, I’m going to punch my eardrums out with sharpened pencils. Could his mom please get a new outfit?!

  • I prefer Barney to Calilou. I DVR 1 30-min episode of Barney every day and that’s her (and my!) treat du jour. She watches Calilou on daddy’s laptop every now and then though.

Anyhoo..thanks for the yoga mention :) I am glad that hopefully something I say will help. If I could see you in action for a bit, I could make good suggestions…well more targeted at least :) If you’re ever feeling realllllly bored, video yourself and upload to youtube if you need targeted advice :) Or just email me…ha!

Anyway I am off to buy kale. I am in love with kale the past few months. I swear I eat enough kale to keep america’s farmlands going.

  • Tay says:

Gotta love Cailou. And Dora. And Wubzy.

  • Libby says:

Happy Calliou was able to help you out this morning (I loved this show when the girls were young enough to watch it). Great that the girls will drink freshly squeezed juice. Amy has just gotten on to making a smoothie with mango, milk, ice and lowfat frozen yoghurt. One day we’ll get on to the green stuff – still can’t believe I drink it (and love it) myself :-),

The Cinderella comment made me spit out a teensy bit of my water. Anything involving heyy, hooo, usually does it.

Thanks for the green juice calorie content! I need to find some recipes using kale because (like Averie said) I’m determined to eat as much kale as possible this winter. Kalerific!

  • Lizzy says:

I haven’t made it to the orchard this year, and i’m so sad about that. I love apples so much. i can’t believe only 40 cents per pound! amazing!

  • Jane/you-know-who says:

I love seeing Ava up at the Breville!

  • Hi, I am looking at this webpage from the phone and this appears to be kind of strange. Thinking you would want to be aware of. This is a good piece of writing however, did not mess that up.
