Scary Spoon

October 30th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast

Dark, dark, DARK. The mornings are so dark! Come on daylight savings time – Mama’s ready to set the clocks back!

On my bike first thing this morning to ride – in the dark yet again – to the gym to pay my respects to the treadmill. I even dug out my reflective vest to wear on the way there today too.

Flash photography: Friend or Foe?

Flash Photography

Foe. Definitely foe.

If I’m going to run on the treadmill and be a rat on the wheel for 30 minutes, I feel like I have no choice but to run sprint intervals to keep things interesting.

Today I did 4 sets of intervals, holding on to a speed of 9.3 to 9.5 for 4 sets – 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 2 minutes and 2 minutes, respectively. I don’t know about you but 9.3 is pretty damn fast for me. I’ll admit though, the more I do it, the easier it becomes, but still. That’s faster than a 6:30 pace and I swear that the treadmill makes this easier than it is out on the open road.

I also swear that I was a little concerned about the possibility of vomiting at the end of that 3 minute set. Take note that it was the only 3 minute set I did.

By the time I was done, the sun had finally dragged itself up over the horizon. I enjoyed the mild air and daylight on the long way home, making my round trip this morning about 20 minutes.

Speaking of round, who wants Pumpkin Fruit Cereal for breakfast today?  (Pumpkins are round people, please don’t make me spell it out. Oh great, I just did.)

Pumpkin Fruit Cereal

Oh me!  I want pumpkin fruit cereal!  I do!

1 diced banana tossed in 2 Tbsp or so of pumpkin puree and a 1/4 cup ground flax seed.  Sprinkled with cinnamon and nutmeg and last but not least some sliced almonds stirred in for crunch.

I know it’s not Halloween yet but we’ve got a homeschool Halloween party to go to today so it’s feeling like a Halloween-y kind of day to me.

I Really Hope that Magnet is Clean

I thought using this Halloween magnet from our Melissa and Doug calendar was pretty cute and clever.  But suddenly I’m thinking about the millions of times I’ve picked these magnets up off the floor, fetched them out from under the couch, the stove, the litter box (kidding! I think.) and wondering if putting it on my spoon was really the best move I could have made?

Of course I didn’t really think about this until I saw the picture just now and that amazing bowl of pumpkin fruit cereal is long gone – spoon licked clean. Twice.

Bah.  Halloween is supposed to be scary, right?

    Scary! but DARLING nonetheless.

I made my first ever Pumpkin smoothie thanks to you and having the rest of the pumpkin puree for smoothie #2 today.

See, I am DREADING Day light’s savings. I can handle driving to work in the dark..I can’t handle the vapors of my “day” at home with JJ being DARK. I am in mourning…(should say “morning”)

    haha

a 9 pace on the treadmill would make ME BARF. I do a 6.2 pace now…and the 5’s seem easy peasy. I can do a 7 pace for about 30 seconds before I wish I had an inhaler.

NICE JOB. I shortened my jogs to 20 minutes hoping for some consistency. 30 minute jobs seem to be wearing me out where I just can’t get my shoes on knowing I have a 30 minute run ahead of me. GETTING THERE!

    THANKS for the INSPIRATION!

I think we are carving pumpkins tonight! yipee!

that would be 30 minute JOGS…but I have 2 fingers in band aids now.

    just sayin’.

(like I never type-o without knuckle injuries)

WOW! You are one fast mama. The darkness is annoying me too! I ran 1/2 of my morning run in the pitch blackness …I get so freaked out that someones going to get me haha. Mmmm pumpkin cereal? I want some!

if daylight savings time could come a little bit quicker that would be great!!!!! have fun at the halloween party today! :)

You are one dedicated Mama!! I’m loving the fruit cereal these days (minus the pumpkin). I still can’t run on the treadmill though… for some reason if I let go of the bars I get really dizzy! Even just walking I need to keep one hand on the bar…I’m weird.

    Have a wonderful Friday!!

I agree – you are definitely dedicated. I’m a little scaredy-cat and don’t even like to go into a dark ROOM let alone ride around outside on a bike in the dark! Kudos to you for sure!

I LOVE intervals on the TM. That’s the only way I like to run indoors. You are FAST! 2 or 3 minutes and 9.3… holy smokes, my shoes would be on fire! Way to go!

    Have a GREAT Halloween!

Great job on those intervals, Mama! You are so speedy, like wings are attached to your feet, you are!

  • Mama Pea says:

If you are like me, magnets disappear faster than Halloween candy. We used to be able to write the girls names with all of the customized letter magnets we had, but now we can just spell, “GO ACE!!!”

  • I love the pic. You’re a card! (ok that expression makes me sound like I’m 72)

Anyway intervals. I do not like them. But I dont like the treadmill & you’re right, anything to keep the boredom at bay!

I also find that open road running is sooo much more challenging, i think it’s the mini inclines/declines, wind, car navigation, etc that’s just the extra dimension of tricky.

    Enjoy the D-Holes.
Gonna cruise HBH post later today…

Oooh. Maybe not the best call on the spoon.

And treadmill… ugh. I can’t do it anymore, which is hilarious, since I learned to run on one.

  • Rebecca says:

I love that picture of you! I’m so excited for it not to be dark anymore in the early morning. I definitely slept through my alarm this morning because I thought it was 10pm and not 6am.

  • Love the “flashy” pic! 😉 You are so dedicated to your workouts! Awesome speed! I have been pushing myself more lately too, and I actually think it helps me stay interested. I had been getting a bit bored… But this weekend I’ll go hiking – a nice, long, very hilly hike.

    Have nice, scary weekend!
