Vegetable Pulp Crackers

September 28th, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Breakfast

I’ve been a busy little bee this morning! (New header anyone?)

After some blog reading this morning I officially had produce dehydration on the brain. With dehydrating madness going on across the land, I knew today was the day to fill the house with the smell of hot fruit stank.

But first, a run! 5 ish miles in 40 ish minutes. I got caught in the rain for the last mile and a half but you’ll be glad to know that both me and the iPod survived.

I was so impressed with Heather’s flax crackers that she made in a dehydrator that looks exactly like mine, it was finally the kick in the pants I needed to make the vegetable pulp crackers I’ve been meaning to make for ages now.

Guess that means I better make some green juice!

Monday Juice

With the pulp from the romaine, cucumber, lemon, ginger and apple I popped it in to the food processor. Yes that would be THREE small appliances I slugged out before 9am on a Monday morning. I tossed in the pulp from the juicer, a peeled carrot, some ground flax seed and cumin. As it was processing I streamed in a little olive oil because fat makes food taste good.

Vegetable Cracker Mash

Below the crackers were layers of apples

Apples

and then bananas, both sliced and tossed in lemon juice before laying them on the trays.

Bananas

When the vegetable cracker mush was ready I flattened it with my fingers into the fruit roll up tray. I sampled the non-dehydrated cracker mush and I have to say, it was pretty dang yummy. I’ll be curious to see what these turn out like.

Crackers

And now we wait. And smell hot fruit all day.

In other news, be sure to check out the latest interview at Health Blog Helper today featuring Angela from Oh She Glows! Angela is such a doll and her enthusiasm is not only contagious and but just oozes from her interview, not to mention her blogs! She’s got lots of great thoughts and advice for bloggers, head on over to Health Blog Helper!

Along with the new header this morning I also installed a new plugin so I can embed YouTube videos directly into the blog. Guess what that means? Why a little dehydrator and juice tour – LIVE from my kitchen this morning! Well, I guess it’s not live since technically it’s a recording. But it’s more live than a photo so please don’t call the Semantic Police on me.

Oh boy – videos on the blog. I think we’re in trouble.

Ok…LOVE the video! You have got to do that more often. It really helps to actually see things happening live. :) You’d do great on the Food Network. (haha)

Can’t wait to hear how those crackers turn out. That’s pretty interesting. What a great way to use up the pulp.

  • Heather says:

I love the video! MORE PLEASE! So excited about your crackers. Once this batch is done, I think I’ll make some veggie pulp ones. I also have a “juicer pulp muffin” recipe I will send you, too!

  • Oh girl I can’t wait to see how your crackers turned out. Havent watched the video or read the Angela interview, I know your Caitlin one was fab. Monday morning chaos round here and puttin’ out fires :) Anyway all those fruit pieces in your hot box look like me and my weeekend LOL. Is your dehydrator loud cuz mine sure is. That would be the only negative I give it…loud! Even when I walk away I still hear the low din that is the freight train, I mean dehydrator, in my kitch. LOL

  • Nicole says:

I didn’t know that you could make crackers like that! I’ve been wanting a dehydrator for a while just because I can’t get dried veggies/fruits where I live without additives, but now I want one to make crackers!!

  • shawna says:

Hmm, I have an Excalibur rotting away in the basement and just made some green juice. I’m so lazy, I didn’t clean out the juicer yet. Maybe I’ll make some crackers!

  • Erin says:

    • Alison says:

We drink out of mason jars because I was tired of all the flimsy glasses breaking. Mason jars are sturdy and I’ve yet to break one yet! (Totally just jinxed myself.)

  • Robin says:

You are brave pulling out that many appliances. Now that my house is clean, I am hesitant to even cook dinner tonight, I think it is a leftover night for us. :) I have a giveaway I just put up in honor of my Marathon, so check it out!

  • Holly says:

ohhh i will be waiting in suspense – i can’t watch videos on my comp at work for some reason, but i look forward to enjoying that tonight!

  • great interview with angela and great video!!! i have always wondered about the dehydrator!

  • Great interview! And I LOVE the video! More please! Pretty please… :)

It’s funny I somehow had a feeling that I would see you make crackers in your dehydrator after I read Heather’s post yesterday… You are sometimes very predictable… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Wow, girl, you’ve been BUSY! Love the header, the new design, the video–everything! I have been experimenting with my dehydrator, too. I just haven’t blogged about it yet. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • You are rockin out today… new header, vlogging and an interview with Angela! Going to go check it out now.

  • Erika says:

Can’t wait to see the crackers and fruit. What kind of dehydrator do you have and do you like it? The item is def on my wish list, but not sure what kind to get.

  • maria says:

Maybe someday I’ll try my hand at juicing, but probably not dehydrating… besides my parents have sent enough dehydrated banana chips to Japan to last me for the rest of my life!!!

  • brandi says:

what a great way to use that pulp! I’m hoping for a juicer once we get a bigger kitchen/more storage room, for sure.
