Book Titles

September 22nd, 2009 | Posted by Alison Spath in Late Night Craziness

If the pictures I took today were going to be used for book covers, the titles of said books might be the following:

Always Listen to Your Mother

In the Dark

My mom called after my post this morning to tell me sprouts should be sprouted in the dark. Who knew? Well – Mom, apparently! Into the cupboard they went.

Beets and the Girls Who Eat Them

Steaming Beets

Would you believe me if I said that until I started juicing beets just recently, I’d never eaten a beet in my life? It’s true. My girlfriend Sharon made them for me today after claiming that they are really good and she loves them. I made her prove it – and she did. I will be making them myself soon. Soon, as in, tomorrow.

Chia Seeds and Girls Who Win Them

Chia Seeds

My THREE POUND BAG of chia seeds from Chia Seeds Direct were delivered and waiting for me when we got home this afternoon. Thanks again Averie!

The sequel to Chia Seeds and Girls Who Win Them might be titled Chia Seeds and Girls Who Experiment With Them. Forever.

Horse Crazy

Horse Pasture

One of the best parts about going over to Sharon’s in Ava’s mind? Horseback riding! And no, that’s not Maxine in the helmet there, that would be Sharon’s daughter. Maxine would be behind the camera, perched on my hip and eating crackers wanting absolutely nothing to do with horses. Quite possibly the only young girl who is not Horse Crazy.

The Proper Care and Feeding of Horses

Proper Care

Self explanatory.

Ava Rides Again

Ava Rides

This is Ava’s second horse back riding experience – so Ava Rides Again is more than appropriate.

How to Climb Mount St. Hemp Seeds

Salad with Hemp

I piled on the hemp seeds as I scarfed down a quick yet still gigantic salad before heading out the door to a meeting tonight. I have to say, hemp seeds are dang good.

I’ve moved into some new self hosted diggs and am still getting settled. This theme is temporary but like an excited, impatient new home owner I was ready to move in and worry about redecorating later. I totally blew the dust off that old Computer Science degree today. Maybe I shouldn’t get ahead of myself here, I haven’t hit Publish yet.

A computer science degree? Nice! My boyfriend is computer engineering. A little different, but he still blows my mind when he starts talking about the research he’s doing! You’re one smart mama! :) I’m still horse crazy at 25. Hehe. I remember being 4 and checking out a book, or more like an encyclopedia, of horses at the library. I couldn’t understand any of it, but I sure liked the pictures!

I like your new theme. It’s very clean. That bag of chia seeds is HUGE! How long do you think it will last ya?

  • Holly says:

i would read a book written by you any day.

  • maria says:

What do Chia seeds taste like exactly? I’ve seen them around a lot in the food/health blog realm, but had never heard of them before.

    • Alison says:

I’ve only had them once, and it was sprinkled over fruit cereal so I didn’t really “taste” them? Hard to say. They had a mild taste, comparable to flax seed I’d say. I’ll report back as I make more of them!

  • Leianna says:

Love your new bloggie format, looks great!
Love your 3lbs of chia seeds!

  • Totallyfried says:

    Love your new theme.

btw, shout out to beets. Love Love them. Have you tried putting the beets in veggie burgers!! they are yummy.

  • Lizzy says:

Ah mama got a new home, and diva like! :) so excited for you girl! I’m also really excited to see all the wonderful things you do with your chia seeds! wahoo!

  • Sooo much to say…first, I am so glad you got the chia’s. Woot! Now I can see what you’re gonna whip up with em. They expand. Alot. Just keep that in mind when cooking. And there’s a jelly-ish texture too if you didnt know that, just tellin ya in advance.

Your hemp seeds. Source please. Brand and info. I currently am no fan of hemp protein powder AT ALL but the seeds look crunchy and tasty.

Next up, read your guest post on Matt’s site…freakin’ amazin’ job there mama! I loved it. Barbara Walters move over, there’s a new weed in town and her name’s Alison, kickin ass and taking names and getting great interviews. Thank you!

I also responded to a comment on Matt’s site that was like a follow up comment to yours about “the money shot” kind of posts, days of the week to do them, etc. I loved that thread of his and the comments that ensued. What a great find.

Next, your new layout. God I wish I had taken a few less biochemistry classes and maybe a computer science class woulda been nice. Because unlike the former, I may actually use the later in my present life. Sigh. I am still so baffled about self-hosting and how that all plays into then using either wordpress or blogger. Like the internet pipes and network is self-hosted, but you still need a software platform on which to compose your posts? And in your case it’s wordpress?

Sorry about the length of this comment and I coulda written you privately but hopefully everyone will see how much I adore you and I give you mega props lady!

    xoxo
    averie :)

I got hemp seeds in bulk at my natural food store, so there is no brand to report on unfortunately! I did see hemp seeds packaged by companies in the refrigerator case (that’s where you’ll find them) along side the bags of store-packaged bulk bags. They are not exactly cheap but I got my smallish bag for about $3 or $4, worth it to me because I really want to try them.

Yes, Matt’s homerun posts article, it’s given me a lot to think about!

Self hosting – yup, I’m still using wordpress, but you install the wordpress software (that is free from wordpress.org) to your own webserver (you have to find a web hosting company you want to work with, or use your own webserver at home which is a lot more complicated and is not something most people do). If you go to http://wordpress.org/ they’ve got a lot of info to look over that can get you started or at least give you an idea of what’s involved. You don’t NEED a computer science degree to do it but my work experience definitely helped me out! Matt’s Health Blog Helper is a good place for info too! You basically have a lot more control over your blog and the way things run when you self host. You are your own webmaster – can be compared to renting (using wordpress.com) or owning (wordpress.org)!

Left a response to your comment here in case anyone was wondering the same thing!

  • I haven’t yet told you, but I love the new layout! It’s very clean and fresh, and fits perfectly with the blog. Love, love, love it! πŸ˜€

I used to love horseback riding as a kid, and Ava riding that horse brought back so many memories. πŸ˜€

I’m going to need to try hemp seeds one of these times!! Does it taste anything like hemp milk or am I way off? πŸ˜‰

Oh, and thanks so much for all the congrats on the run! Silly me, forgetting to say how my dad did on the run. He came in at 52:02, which was almost exactly 6 minutes before me. He said he felt great too, and already we’re both planning for the next 10k (or half marathon???) that we can do. πŸ˜€

Anyways, this post is progressively becoming longer and longer, so I’ll end now. πŸ˜‰

  • Matt says:

Nice new site! I had no idea you were a computer science major, that’s so cool! (Well, to another nerd it is.)

Also cool that your mom is a hippie like you. :) I’ve heard lots of good things about chia seeds and energy and all that.

    Big salads rock!

  • Erica says:

Love the new site! How fun.

Cute titles with the pics. That is one massive bag of chia. I want that salad right now…lunch needs to get here faster πŸ˜‰

Hope you have a good one

  • Jennifer says:

Wow….look at Ava!!! That’s so cool. She’s just taking off all by herself. Is that something she’ll want to continue to do like take lessons?

I’ve had beets once at a salad bar and didn’t like them. Maybe they were pickled or something. I know they are very good for you, though.

  • Whit says:

Selfhosted?!?!?! You are moving up in the world!

Ava is so cute on the horse, I grew up with a horse. I love when other kids are equally as horse crazy as I was.

  • A says:

Wow…. look you “Ms Self Hosted!!” How exciting! I read the interview post you did on Blog SEO. Very nice!! I’m so impressed! Congrats!!! πŸ˜€
