Stay at Home Yoga

August 24th, 2009 | Posted by Alison in Breakfast

Yoga was on the agenda for this morning, but what was NOT on the agenda was Thing 2 waking up early with me.

Under normal, children-still-sleeping circumstances, I would listen my yogadownload podcast from the computer speakers, but that wasn’t going to work today. Instead of making yogadownload and Blue’s Clue’s battle it out, I’d fired up the iPod and used my arm band for yoga like I do for running!

You really can take yoga anywhere

I totally should have taken a picture of me patting myself on the back.

With Steve and Blue babysitting Maxine, I got my downward dog on.

Blue and Steve

And I couldn’t believe my eyes when I spotted Cowboy Curtis (Ava’s name for that doll) doing what looks pretty close to downward dog during my OWN downward dog!

Downward Doll

And although I think this picture borders on obscene, it was totally worth groping around while still in downward dog to find the camera.

How close do your heels come to the floor downward dog? Mine are closer than they use to be before I started doing yoga regularly, but notice I said closER. I think that’s a long term goal of mine – to get my heels to the floor. I’ve never been very flexible and I hear it can take years of yoga practice to get there. Cowboy Curtis seems like she’s closer than me.

I did 40 minutes of Gentle Hatha Yoga #1 and #2. I enjoyed the sun on my face during savasana and for moment let myself pretend I was in a glamorous yoga studio or perhaps on a beach with white sand and gently crashing surf instead of being surround by toys trying to show me up, Blue’s Clue’s playing in the background and the garbage men making an obscene amount of noise early on a Monday morning.

Morning Sun

After yoga I was ready to officially take the Breakfast Challenge by the horns and wrestle it to the ground. It’s funny how calling myself a failure motivates me. Whatever it takes!

I got to thinking yesterday about something my raw food experimenter girly Heather told me about – a watermelon margarita that she’d had at a restaurant once and that she’s been loving the virgin version of this drink at home recently. After a little chat with her last night about this, I was ready to make the smoothie to beat all smoothies.

A Watermelon Kiwi Smoothie. Man your stations, prepare for take off.

Man your stations

While tequila for breakfast has it’s appeal, I opted for the virgin version of this drink myself. A bunch of watermelon and 1 1/2 kiwis, skins removed. (I ate the other half kiwi and left the skin on!)

Blended and sending me into orbit!

Quick Shot

As much as I thought it was going to be good, there was a small part of me that was worried it was going to be kind of gritty and gross. Like drinking the watermelon juice at the bottom of the container (tell me I’m not the only one that does that) with little bits of watermelon grit in there. It doesn’t stop me from drinking it, but not exactly something I’d get excited about for breakfast either.

But this – THIS – was awesome. I was the perfect texture and sweetness. Even kind of creamy! The Raw Food Detox Diet has me really into “fruit and fruit alone” for breakfast these days. A smoothie with nothing but fruit is sheer perfection in my book. A big shout out to  Heather for the inspiration and to Sarah for the motivation! I’m not sure I would have tried this if I wasn’t on the look out for new, fruit centered breakfast ideas.

And a shout out to me for calling myself a failure!  Three cheers for chastising myself!

Loving the blender drink….watermelon and kiwis are equally delicious, though I’d never think to just blend those and only those. I’m impressed…something I shall try!

    Mmmm…that looks really good.

My heels do not touch the floor either. My instructor said it took him 3 years to accomplish that, too.

Looks like you had a fabulous weekend lady! I am pumped for yoga tonight…sadly I don’t think barbie will be in attendance though.

My heels will probably never touch the ground and no amount of positive thinking will get them there.

  • some days my heels hit the ground but most of the time they don’t.

you have calves of STEEL! awesome. why have i not made a watermelon smoothie? i am sure the texture is amazing! i am going to try that sooner rather than later, the melons are getting a little bitter around here.

  • I’m always looking for new breakfast ideas now that I’m into fruit and nothing but fruit in the morning… The smoothie looks and sounds great. I’ll have to pick up some kiwi and watermelon when I’m at the store… :)

    Happy Monday!

  • YAY I am so glad it turned out okay! I think I’ll add kiwi to mine next time, too. Ideally it’d be nice to add some ice cubes in it but my crappy blender does not like ice. Did I tell you how the BlendTec guy was doing a demo at Sam’s last week and I almost bought a $370 blender? Yeah, let’s not go there. It was a dangerous situation.

  • OO! I want to try that watermelon-kiwi smoothie right now!! I was just at a friend’s party and she made awesome watermelon margaritas but not with fresh watermelons.

And I love that the doll is doing down dog! I seriously laughed out loud when I saw that and it was the first thing I thought of even before I read what you said about it! haha
