Anybody Have A Caterpillar We Can Borrow?

When I wasn’t eating fruit this morning, was drinking green lemonade.

Juice for two.

Even the Man Drinks Green Lemonade

Green Lemonade is even growing on Zak. (Maybe he should see a doctor about that.)

And after juice, I did exactly what I said I wasn’t going to do. I googled.

If your pupa has been very dark for over 48 hours, it is probably dead.

I’m almost positive our little buddy is gone. He started turning brown well over 48 hours ago. They are supposed to be green and plump until they are about to emerge but ours is brown and looking kind of shrivled.

Right now he’s still hanging from Cinderella’s shoulder but the whole bowl has been relocated to the garage based on my google findings and the possible stench that can emerge if his little cocoon breaks open. How much stink can one little dead butterfly make? I don’t know, but I don’t want to come down one morning to find out.  I haven’t completely given up and flicked him into the compost but I’m not holding out much hope.

Ava was understandably upset and said some heart breaking things about how she really wanted to see him be a butterfly and maybe he just wants to be brown. My poor little honey. It’s all part of the experience I suppose.

It was quite the bummer, but life goes on.  Let’s move on to happier things.

Like nectarines.

And plums.

Today wasn’t just fruit eating day.  It was deck painting day too. The deck was blasted Sunday with the power washer to remove grime, loose paint, and the skin off our legs.

Before:

Ava and Zak got to work.

A&Z painting

Max and I wore our tutu’s and tap shoes and put pony tails in our hair.

Max in a tutu

I prepped lettuce for lunch. Once I was done I scooped up all the lettuce spines from the sink and threw them in the colander to be transferred to the compost bucket..

pink_brush

I spy with my little eye… something PINK!

Do you see how things get lost in the compost??

And to think I almost sacrificed my potato/nail brush (is that gross?) to make a salad.

Tuesday Lunch

Red leaf, carrots, raw corn, tomatoes, green pepper, broccoli…

And before I knew it, the deck was painted!

after

Much better.

Dinner tonight was another Vegetarian Times inspired meal: Stuffed Eggplant.

I sliced 3 eggplants lengthwise, scooped out their guts and diced said guts up into approx. 1/2 in cubes. All eggplant parts were salted and let sit for about a half hour and then rinsed to remove bitterness. The innards were sauteed with onions, walnuts, grape tomatoes, cinnamon and dried oregano in some olive oil. The shells were boiled for about 5 minutes and then broiled in the oven for 5 minutes before they were stuffed.

I made a bread crumb topping with oat bran, a little olive oil and feta cheese. Baked at 325 for 35 minutes.

This meal was tasty but A LOT of freaking work. This is not one I’ll be making again.

I had one half eggplant with a few of the frozen fries I baked for the girls.

Tuesday Dinner

Zak took Ava to the fitness center pool for a cool down swim so it was me and Maxagirl for dinner.

Max dinner

And a post dinner bike ride. Notice what’s in the “trunk”? Tap shoes. A girl can never be too prepared.

Dinner Ride

And she rode off into the sunset.

Well, really we were headed north but I’m not telling.

So is Maxie excited about taking dance class like her big sister? Gabbie has been wearing Bridget’s costume from the recital around all summer. 2 kids in dance classes!

  • First of all, you are very brave for googling “brown pupa normal” on google. Second, I think the tutu picture is the cutest thing ever and totally made me smile. 😀 Thirdly, I’m making the stuffed eggplant once eggplants go on sale over here!! I always forget how much I love that veggie. Sometimes I get stuck in the same ol’ veggie routine…I need to mix things up! 😀
